Our family of four (two kids aged 11 and 15) enjoyed a fantastic week at Gagakuan. Our host Saki was very responsive from the initial reservation until we departed. She even dropped off a delicious birthday cake for my daughter who celebrated her birthday the day before we arrived.
This is not a traditional hotel room but a traditional Japanese house in a very nice neighbourhood. The house itself is very well equipped and a fantastic way to experience living in a traditional family home. Although more than 100 years old and very traditional, it has been equipped with a number of modern touches that enhance the stay. Our two kids were absolutely fascinated with the house and the entire environment. For our purposes, it was ideally situated between Kyoto station and central Kyoto. The Gojo subway stop and the bus stop are both less than a five minute walk from the house. This allows you to easily access the public transportation system to all of the wonderful temples. We also took side trips to Osaka, Nara and a day trip to Hiroshima using our Japan rail passes.
Except for a few hot days (typical for Kyoto in the summer), we had a perfect time in Kyoto thanks to our great stay at Gagakaun and the kind generosity of Saki. We hope we get another chance to return to Kyoto and see the things we missed this visit and stay here again.

We enjoyed to stay in a beautiful Japanese style house for 2 nights. It is located close to Higashiyama underground station and you will find there easily from the station. There are coffee and Japanese tea (3 kinds of Japanese tea!!) Only one big issue is the internet connection in the house. There is a pocket wi-if upstairs but it almost didn't work for searching for a restaurant or checking SNS or uploading photos. Overall, I highly recommend you :)

"Wonderful stay at Ryokan Kyo-no-yado Kagihei Kyoto"
My husband and I stayed for 4 nights at Ryokan Kyo-no-yado Kagihei in Kyoto and really enjoyed our stay. The host was very friendly and English speaking which was very helpful. It was great experiencing the traditional ryokan style with tatami mats in our room. The multi-course breakfast which was included in our booking was delicious and different every morning, the food and the presentation was prepared with meticulous detail. The location of the Ryokan was amazing, literally a few steps away from the Nishiki Market where there are lots of great food and shopping. It was also very close to the Gion district and 10 mins walk from Pontocho street lined with restaurants by the Kamo river and also close to metro lines & buses. The one thing of note and to be aware of is that there is a 11pm close every evening and key is left with the host at the front so we needed to return by that time. That didn't bother us as unlike Tokyo, Kyoto didn't seem to have too much going on late into the night. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this Ryokan for anyone looking for a traditional experience in Japan.

This guest house sets the standard: clean, comfortable and well-run. The staff were very helpful and polite. The sleeping areas were clean and comfortable. I slept well each night. It's location, just 5 minutes walk from Nijo station, is perfect for whatever you need or wherever you want to go to in Kyoto.
If you're looking for somewhere to base yourself for seeing Kyoto then this is the place for you. If you're looking to get drunk and party then look elsewhere.

I enjoyed my stay at Guesthouse Yahata. It has affordable price with clean rooms. The hotel is located in a very quite neighborhood. It was fun for me to experience tatami the first time. The owner is a very nice lady. She planned a one-day trip agenda with beautiful attractions while I was there. Also, I accidentally left my glasses while I was leaving to Tokyo. It was very kind of her to offered to mail it to my new hostel. Overall, I highly recommend this place.

I have never stayed at a Ryokan, but having stayed at Matsui Honkan, I would definitely do it again the next time I am in Japan. The Ryokan is beautiful and conveniently located near downtown Kyoto. I stayed in a Japanese style room equipped with tatami mats and the whole traditional fitting. It really made me feel as if I was staying in a room in an older Japan era. The bath in the basement is beautiful and very relaxing and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. I wanted to try traditional Japanese Kaiseki (which you normally have to book well ahead of time) but to my surprise, not only did they try to find places for me, one of the hotel staff ran out to a local kaiseki restaurant to ask in person and the restaurant managed to accomodate me when they were fully booked. I would highly recommend this place!
