Beware- fraudulent owner
I messaged owner a few times during the week prior but never got a response. 7 people drove for 6 hours to arrive at property. I called owner and asked how to check in. She said she had no record of us reserving and paying and suggested I “work it out” with the other family staying there ( we rented entire house). She claimed VRBO never told her we rented it and never paid her. Then owner says she thinks maybe she rented it out on another site or maybe it was sold. She really didn’t seem to know. Vrbo did not seem at all to care they rented a house and collected money and there was no actual house. -They offered to try to find us a hotel room an hour away- but we had groceries, games etc so we all just piled back in the car and left. This was an awful experience. 7 people all arranged to be together, we paid , and got scammed by a fraudulent listing. I thought VRBO was a reputable company but clearly it is not. Actually, when I called VRBO they said “you should see the crazy things that happen with renting houses ”. They did not even seem surprised they rented a house to me that was not available. I still do not know if the mistake was with the owner or VRBO. They both just blamed each other. No one is interesting in compensation for our gas, groceries, time wasted driving and I haven’t even been refunded. I will be sharing this cautionary tale to every travel site, blog, and social media site I can so no one else has to be scammed like this. It is complete fraud to collect money for a house that you can’t actually rent. It is now 10 days later- no refund!
