The Boyd family migrated from Scotland to Ireland in 1745 after losing their royal lands fighting on the wrong side in the Jacobite uprising. By the late 1700's, the Boyd family had migrated to America just in time to fight for the colony's independence. In the early 1820's they settled Haywood County on the 100 acre plus farm land where the family still resides today- 200 years later. This is a real working farm surrounded by farmland in a rural setting close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That means there is an abudance of animals including horses and cows. There is an abundance of wildlife including possums, raccons, and squirrels. There are all types of critters and varmits on the farm. That is part of what makes it unique. There is a red fox and a bobcat that live close by as well as a flock of turkeys. You may see deer, bear, and elk that come over from Cataloochee Valley and sometimes bed down in the front yard. You will probably hear the coyotes howl at night. There are a couple of harmless black snakes that live close by and help us control the mice population. None of these animals will harm you, we have been living with them for centuries. If you don't like animals or are afraid of animlas our place is not for you. This is not a country club and this is not a resort. There are also electric fences on the property and if you touch them, you will get a jolt but they will not hurt you. The house belonged to Lt. Colonel Katie Boyd (deceased) who traveled the world during her army military career collecting antiques and other pieces of one of a kind furniture. The logs in the interior of the house are more than 200 years old. She had the logs moved to the home site in the 1980's and built the first part of the house. It was updated in the early 1990's and then again in 2017. If you want to experience the appalachian history, culture in a farm setting with modern conveniences then this is it. We have the exterminator out every month, but this is a farmhouse , so you may see the occassional ladybug, beatle, spider or moth when guests leave the doors open. Please keep them closed.
