The Morton Arboretum’s unique, interactive holiday light show was one for the record books. With snow gently falling the night of our woodland stroll, it was like being part of our own snow globe experience. Hug a tree and see the naked beauty light up with love in response; watch tendrils of lights dance merrily across a pond; hear Tchaikovsky’s, “The Nutcracker Suite” illuminate the wooded landscape; see a galaxy of glowing orbs cover an entire hillside as the million points of light pay homage to an enormous tree as bare as it was beautiful.
These spotlights were located at the end of the 1-mile walk. They were a wonderful finale to an evening of magic.
If you can’t make this year’s “Illumination,” you can catch the annual event next holiday season; or share my experience that night via my blog at http://www.aplacecalledroam.com/home/the-morton-arboretum-an-illuminating-look-at-trees-the-holidays.
During The Morton Arboretum's annual Illumination event, a grove along the mile-long path was lit with chandeliers hung high in the Red Pine trees. Music in the background with the snow falling softly overhead left a memory unlike any other.

Illuminated as they were, the trees in the arboretum were both spooky and enchanting. This oak was one of dozens of trees highlighted at the Morton Arboretum’s second holiday extravaganza, Illumination.
The Morton Arboretum, one of the leading arboreta of the world in size, age, quality of specimens, and programs in plant collections, research, and education, is a nonprofit outdoor museum dedicated to championing trees through scientific study, conservation, education, and outreach. The Arboretum was established in 1922 by Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company and son of Arbor Day founder J. Sterling Morton.
With 1700 acres to enjoy year round, be sure to wear your walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Definitely bring a camera. The photo ops are as plentiful as the trees.
