Castle visit

Pros: The rooms were large. Plumbing worked well. Staff was great. There are lots of stairs, even if one is staying on the first floor.
Cons: The place needs a good cleaning, maintenance and updating. Landscaping is also needed.
Location: It was a perfect place to embark on a WB Yeats pilgrimage. All of the Sligo area is accessible and we did not have to fight for parking in Sligo town.
It was an interesting stay in one of the manor houses of Ireland. The Hotel is impressive, but can use some updating.

Cool old castle!

Pros: History. Great venue for big wedding or anniversary party. Lovely grounds. Wish I had time for a horseback ride on the wonderful grounds.
Cons: My common & minor complaint about most Irish hotels...no face tissues, hair conditioner or body lotion in the rooms. Room lighting needs improvement.
It is a lovely old place. Staff was very helpful and fun to talk with. The room had a beautiful view of the grounds. Sadly, learned later from the newspaper that the property which has been in the family for centuries is up for sale. It's obvious that it is a maintenance nightmare but if you love history and antique homes.....you will understand and love this one. Had fun in the pub having a bit to eat when we arrived. Breakfast was great and the room was bright and opulent.

Pros: The ambiance and the staff
Cons: Better connectivity. No WiFi and very poor 3G coverage
Location: Great countryside but still close to Sligo and the Wild Atlantic Way
We felt like royalty staying in a genuine castle. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We were fortunate to have sunny weather when we arrived and hence we enjoyed a stroll around the castle and surrounding gardens.

Enjoyment Abounds

Returning to this majestic castle after 20 years was equally magical the second time around. From the pastoral grounds to the historic structure with all its newer enhancements, there was pleasure at every turn. From reception to superb dining to personal comforts, Markree Castle never disappointed. If you're looking for a memorable stay, do yourself a favor and book this destination. You will go back in time with grand staircases, monumentally exquisite stained glass windows depicting castle ancestry and a warm fire to greet you. You might even book a falconry experience in that most ancient sport, truly wonderful. All this where time stands still yet memories remain. Excellent!

Living up to expectations

Pros: Food, staff and overall experience.
Cons: Nothing.
Location: Location was good for local village Sligo and other sightseeing in area.
The castle was just what we expected. Good to see it hadn't been spoilt by modernising the inside too much. Staff was tremendous and so hospitable and meals were excellent. Highly recommend the dinner menu. Came from New Zealand and well worth it. Will definitely stay again.

Cons: Room should have been much cleaner than what it was Menu definitely needs improvement not much of a choice on it.
My husband and I were very disappointed with this hotel we chose this hotel for our 1st wedding anniversary. Food in the restaurant was cold and disgusting it didnt taste nice at all. There was even a hair on the side plate. Very bad menu aswell. Staff never asked us were we ok and it was obvious that we were not happy about the food. We did make a complaint about the food on the morning of our departure but not much was done. Didnt seem to care that we were not happy about our stay. We didnt feel the room was very clean you could clearly see dog hairs on the bed, and the bed was the most uncomfortable bed we have ever stayed in. We will never stay in this hotel again.
