Nutella-filled pancake balls made my day at this delightful little cafe. You can also get them filled with dulce de leche or pumpkin-apple butter, but why would you when Nutella is an option! Paired with Sweet ‘N’ Spicy Bacon and blood orange juice. Want to learn to the proper way to leave the hack and deliver the stone across the hog lines and into the house? For $25 you can take a two hour learn-to-curl clinic, Totally worth it! Behold, The Gates of Hell!
The Gates of Hell is a drainage tunnel that runs beneath High Street, carrying a stream from Glen Echo Park to the Olentangy River. The creek bed is dry most of the time, except after rain. A large steel cage is built in front of the tunnel to ensure no large debris becomes lodged inside.
The interior of the drain includes two bends and when standing at the center, little to no light can be seen.
The interior of the tunnel and the surrounding concrete runoff area are popular canvases for graffiti artists and the area's half pipe design is inviting to skateboarders. A dilapidated dock jutting out into a mucky pond hidden in a tree patch on the west campus of the Ohio State University. Cherry Blossoms!
I must be in Washington D.C.
Nope, just walking through the west campus of The Ohio State University. Sub-zero temperatures and the ever looming gray skies of the Ohio winter got you bummed?
Come get a burst of color by visiting the retail greenhouse inside Oakland Nursery's Columbus store. Tons of orchids, succulents, cacti and other blooming and foliage houseplants to peruse, photograph and perhaps purchase. Simple, well-crafted donuts available day and night. No need to wake up early to grab a blueberry cake donut or maple bar - these guys are open 24-hr! Cheep pricing makes it easy to try a variety. It's State Fair time again! Are you ready for this one?! A giant red gummy bear on a stick dipped in batter and then of course DEEP FRIED! The setting sun illuminating the trees above the creek inside Glen Echo Ravine.
This spot isn't within the bounds of the actual park. It can be reached by a gravel access path behind Lucky's Market. From there, you can head east along the creek bed, through the ravine and end up inside the park. It's State Fair time again! Deep fried dill pickle and pepper jack cheese. This tentacled carnivorous critter is Drosera capensis, the Cape Sundew. A small rosette-forming carnivorous species of perennial sundew native to the Cape in South Africa. The strap-like leaves are covered in brightly colored tentacles which secrete a sticky mucilage that traps insects. When insects are first trapped, the leaves roll lengthwise by thigmotropism (plant's reaction to touch) toward the center. This aids digestion by bringing more digestive glands in contact with the prey.
This and many other tropical species are on display in the OSU Biological Sciences Greenhouse. This is sort of a hidden find. This greenhouse resides on the medical campus of OSU on top of a parking garage. It's not very often that you take an elevator to reach a greenhouse. The fennel sausage pizza with Gouda, havarti, smoked provolone, onion and fennel pollen from Harvest bar and kitchen.
Cute and clever foreshadowing graffiti on the former Rife's Market in Grandview hinting of the upcoming brick and mortar expansion of perennial food truck favorite; Sweet Carrot. In addition to all the cool local shops and restaurants located in Short North district, with a bit of timing and luck, you can look westerly and catch a glorious sunset!
#GoldenHour Jeni's is the place to go for quality ice cream in Columbus. What we have here is an ice cream sandwich made with Molasses-Ginger Snap cookies and Goat Cheese and Cherries ice cream. And in the cup we have a hot chocolate float with dark chocolate peppermint ice cream. Both were amazing! This is a unique yellow and purple bi-color Calibrachoa called Purple Cartwheel that will be available to the retail market in spring of 2016.
The OSU cultivar trials, located at Ohio State University's Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens, are conducted each year in order to evaluate ornamental bedding and container plants.
The objective of these trials is to observe the performance of new and recently introduced cultivated plant varieties under environmental conditions typical of central Ohio.
Despite their stated scientific and economic purposes, the gardens are beautiful to walk through and photograph. Best of all, they're FREE! You can't go wrong here. Goat Cheese with Red Cherries and Dark Chocolate Peppermint. The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899.
Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils.
The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals. Delightful little cafe in the heart of Columbus. Eclectic menu includes twists on standard breakfast fare (ex: pancake balls) as well as Mexican favs (Mazatlan Pork & Egg Sandwich). Open for breakfast and lunch. These planted shoes decorate the raised beds of the horticulture therapy garden on the argriculture campus of The Ohio State University. The Columbus Crew upgraded their stadium's food offerings to include many local vendors for the 2015 campaign.
These are drumsticks from Hot Chicken Takeover, southern style spicy fried chicken.
The food truck at the stadium doesn't offer the hottest of the hot, but these 'warm' drumsticks will have you downing multiple $4 bottles of water! A burger topped with bacon, Ohio Swiss, balsamic red onions and a truffle aioli from Angry Bear Kitchen. The Tiny Doors Project has hit Columbus. Four local artists in conjunction with the parks and rec department have placed four tiny fairy/elf doors in city parks. City foresters worked with the artists as none of the pieces are allowed to be physically attached to the trees. The idea of the project is to get families, kids or just the public in general to get outside and explore their city parks. This moss shrouded door can be found just off the path near the shelter house in the Park of Roses. #tinydoors The neon pink filament like blooms of the Persian Silk Tree (Albizia julibrissin).
The leaves of this tree are very similar to the leaves of the Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica). Unlike the Sensitive Plant, the leaves of the Persian Silk Tree are not thigmotropic and do not close upon touch.
The tree is very attractive in bloom and has a tropical look for being winter hardy in many places in the Northern U.S. However, in many places the tree is invasive and is negatively allelopathic to neighboring plant life.
A miniature boardwalk leading to apparently nowhere tucked away in a wooded area on the west campus of the Ohio State University. A stunning specimen of Fagus sylvatica 'tricolor', the tricolor beech. The crown jewel of a rather impressive collection of ornamental beech trees in the chadwick arboretum. #treetrove Blueberry doughnut from DK diner. The shapes may be irregular but the taste is otherworldly! The cool retro sign outside of the amazing Little Donut Shop located next to the stalwart concert venue, the Newport Music Hall on The Ohio State University campus. A trio from Jeni's new color collection consisting of
Ultramarine Blue - Pulverized wild Maine blueberries and natural fruit extracts with buttermilk, biodynamic yogurt, grass-grazed milk, and cream.
Cadmium Yellow - Bitter citron yellow. Crushed whole lemons with bergamot, white grapefruit, biodynamic yogurt, grass-grazed milk, cream, and buttermilk.

Water beading up on the pale blue bloom of this cultivated variety of Convolvulus. Intended for container or landscape use, this variety should not be confused with its less desired relative, the hedge bindweed.

The breakfast burger from Chop Shop topped with American cheese, bacon, fried egg, hash-brown, maple syrup and ketchup.
...and not to be ignored, just look at those freaking onion rings! A regular order consists of five gigantic onion rings that must be the equivalent of eating an entire deep fried softball-sized onion. It's time again for the Ohio State Fair, which means it's time for a deep fried fair food feast!
Here is a black forest funnel cake!
Chocolate funnel cake topped with powdered sugar, cherry pie filling, chocolate syrup and whipped cream.
The Ohio Sate Fair started in 1850 and has been held at its current location since 1886.
#WeekendGetaway South of Lane is a tiny neighborhood breakfast/brunch spot located, you guessed it. south of Lane Ave in Upper Arlington.
This pile of #delicious includes hash-browns, chili, cheese, onions, two sunny side up eggs and hot sauce. This upscale diner has a fun 60s vibe and a great menu. The Philly Cheese Steak features shaved prime rib - clearly a notch above your standard diner fare. A close-up of the bloom of Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) doing its best sputnik impression. The Pepper Burger from O'Reilly's Pub is still the best burger in the city, in my opinion.
Bacon and provolone cheese cover a beef patty that has been rolled in black peppercorns....just literally engulfed in black peppercorns. Spicy, strong, intense.
I can't think of a better culinary nightcap for my birthday. Behold, The Gates of Hell!

Deep fried buckeye (a chocolate and peanut butter candy in the shape of the fruit of the state tree, for you Non-Ohioans) The loaded Mr. Potato Head, with cheddar, bacon, scallions and baked potato from Mikey's Late Night Slice. With locations strategically placed around town, it's a great bet for pizza anytime of night. #lateplates The Crest Burger, cold-smoked, house-ground patty, caramelized beer onions, herb mushrooms, swiss cheese and oven roasted tomato on a house baked bun. Served with a side of wood fired truffle mac and cheese. The shell or husk left behind by a molting Cicada from the genus Tibicen. The annual late summer mating songs of the male cicadas are a disparaging alert to kids that school will be starting soon. If you ever happen upon one emerging from its husk, take the time to watch it happen! The tiny shriveled wings will enlarge and form a neon green almost stained glass mosaic pattern! A half dozen deliciously decadent donuts and a week's worth of calories from The Little Donut Shop in The Ohio State University Campus area. Pictured are the Fruity Pebbles, Milky Way, Maple Bacon, Chocolate Pretzel, Birthday Cake and Strawberry Shortcake! The Milky Way donut, a traditional cake donut dipped in chocolate frosting and topped with chocolate chips and a caramel drizzle.
#FoodPorn Peanut butter and jelly cheesecake!
Peanut butter cheesecake with a concord grape caramel sauce and a glass of milk. An overflowing box of donut deliciousness from DK Diner in Grandview!
All your favorites are here including; yeast glazed, chocolate devil's food, sour cream, cinnamon sugar, blueberry and glazed cake!
Not pictured because already consumed was a chocolate creme filled long john.
Get there super early and get super rewarded because they'll be super fresh, hot and ridiculously awesome! Goat cheese stuffed tempura squash blossom with romesco sauce from Angry Bear Kitchen. The Fruity Pebbles donut; a traditional cake donut dipped in vanilla frosting and topped with Fruity Pebbles cereal!
#FoodPorn An intimate closeup of the inner sanctum of a magnolia bloom. The white petals will wilt and drop off. The yellow part in the center holds the seeds and will enlarge and become what is called an Plant nerds, assemble! The Titan Arum, or corpse flower in full bloom and stench at the biological sciences greenhouse. Normally a rare occurrence, this is third flower to bloom in about a year's time for the Ohio State University. The greenhouse is located on the roof of a seven story building and it was said that way down on the ground level it smelled like a dead mouse! A view of one of the ponds within The Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park. A 52 acre urban research venture through the Ohio State University. An observation pavilion and walking trails are open to the public. Mini freaking ponies!!! Dwarf ponies used as therapy animals being presented at the Upper Arlington labor day arts festival. Two giant plate-sized pancakes made with blueberry donut batter from DK diner. The DK stood for Donut Kitchen but the place and the menu has expanded from exquisite donuts to include a plethora of breakfast, lunch and dinner fare. Brie and orange marmalade in a crisp, honey drizzled, phyllo shell. Apricot, orange and cracked pepper preserve, Granny Smith apples, fresh strawberries. A sundae from Graeter's consisting of strawberry chip ice cream, butterscotch sauce, whipped cream and a cherry!
Tip from a Graeter's veteran, don't let the 'chip' in their chocolate chip flavors mislead you. There are some serious chunks of chocolate to be dug out!
Raspberry is the perennial favorite, but strawberry and black cherry fill out the medal stand nicely. Katalina’s - Home of the Original Pancake Balls.
pancake balls made with local stoneground Fowler’s Mill flour and filled with pumpkin-apple butter. Served with real Ohio maple syrup and Katalina’s Original Sweet ‘N’ Spicy Bacon. The Birthday Cake donut, a traditional cake donut dipped in vanilla frosting and topped with birthday cake crumble and rainbow sprinkles.
#FoodPorn It's time again for the Ohio State Fair, which means it's time for a deep fried fair food feast!
The highlight of this year's fair food trek has to be the deep fried strawberries on a stick!
Each stick has two whole strawberries and two chunks of cream filled short cake battered and deep fried, dusted with powdered sugar and a cream cheese icing glaze!
The batter was crispy and hot and the berries were fresh and still chilled. All around good stuff!

#WeekendGetaway A dark chocolate chili log with torched marshmallows, toasted milk and dulce de leche ice cream from Angry Bear Kitchen. South of Lane is a tiny neighborhood breakfast/brunch spot located, you guessed it. south of Lane Ave in Upper Arlington.
They have the best waffles I've yet to encounter. (Sorry, Waffle House, I still love you.) The outside is perfectly crisp and the inside is super light and airy. Simply #delicious A shiny happy smiling piping hot pretzel with cheese sauce and a serious mustard from Standard Hall. What's a dosa?
a dosa is a Southern Indian crepe made from rice batter and black lentils.
This is a Paneer Masala Dosa filled with homemade cheese and herbed potato curry.
Dosa Corner is a small place sort of hidden from the main traffic flow. It's worth seeking out if you're like me and had never tried a dosa before.
#delicious Pineapple upside down cake donut holes with caramel dipping sauce!
I almost exclusively go for chocolate laden desserts, but this one intrigued me and I wasn't disappointed with my decision.
#FoodieFinds Delightful little cafe in the heart of Columbus. Eclectic menu includes twists on standard breakfast fare (ex: pancake balls) as well as Mexican favs (Mazatlan Pork & Egg Sandwich). Open for breakfast and lunch. Great outdoor seating in the summer. The Pecan Crusted Pork Chop was a tasty riff on a classic dish. The candied pecans and apple cider glaze gave it a nice bit of sweetness (think honey-glazed-ham). Expect the unexpected from Bono Pizza!
A dessert waffle made fresh to order with the chef's secret batter mix, topped and dressed with the works! Chocolate, vanilla and caramel sauces decorate the plate along with rosettes of whipped cream, the waffle is coated in Nutella and Biscoff cookie spreads and finished off with fresh strawberries, blackberries and blueberries.
This is the best dessert in the city from a somewhat hidden gem known almost exclusively for their amazing and creative pizzas.
Bono once shared a building with a liquor store/carryout. The owners built a wood fired oven in their tiny corner of the convenience mart. They have since relocated into an almost equally obscure locale. They are tucked way back in the middle of an apartment complex sharing space with a pub. Their wood fired oven is now located outside the back of the restaurant on a make shift trailer.
#localgem Chicken and waffles covered in syrup and Frank's red hot with a side of hoe fries and more hot sauce! Columbus restaurant week third course; raspberry cheesecake. Scallops, shrimp, clams and mussels with fresh tomatoes and oregano in a white wine sauce served over linguine. Meet the scandalous offspring of the carnal intertwining of the savory corn bread and the sinfully sweet sugar cookie; I present to you the Sweet Corn Cookie! Buttermilk fried chicken, Belgian waffles and maple syrup. A simple rendition of the soul food classic. An apt addition to the menu at Bar 145, known mostly for their impressive burger line-up. Maple bacon mac and cheese; cavatappi pasta, Tillamook cheddar, maple cured bacon and maple syrup from Bar 145. It's time again for the Ohio State Fair, which means it's time for a deep fried fair food feast!
Here we have deep fried butter! It's just what it sounds like, a hunk of butter, deep fried. I had heard about this concoction years ago but had never tried it. It was not my favorite...I'm glad I tried it, but likely won't ever need it again.

Anyway, on the West Campus of The Ohio State University there is a small tree patch that hides a pond and a series of short trails through the woods and nearby prairie.

The Hudson 29 cheeseburger with two
ground daily beef patties, American cheese, sweet pickle mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, tomato and onion.
$16 for a burger and fries might seem pricey, but it is worth it for this burger! It's simple and done just right. Nice sear and seasoning on the patties and I can't explain it, but shredded lettuce does it for me every time! It's an old school diner burger elevated to finer dining.
#FoodieFinds The Royale from The Cheesy Truck. Mac and cheese and BBQ pulled pork on Texas toast with a side of tots. The Crazy Kiwi Duncan Dog! An absolutely enormous foot long hot dog slathered with grilled onions, cole slaw, bacon, cheese sauce and hot sauce! Go Crew! The Maple Bacon donut, a traditional cake donut dipped in maple frosting and covered in copious amounts of delicious bacon.
#FoodPorn A moo shu pork wrap with rice, mushrooms, edamame, pickled cabbage and hoisin sauce and a side of Shagbark chips and fresh salsa. The star of this culinary composition is the Shrub Fruit Soda, a tart spritzer of blackberry, mild vinegar and soda water. What a delight to discover that drinking vinegar is a treat! The Strawberry Shortcake donut, a traditional cake donut dipped in strawberry frosting and topped with streusel topping and a strawberry drizzle.
#FoodPorn The fudgy-wudgy cake from the Chocolate Cafe. I'm not qualified to comment on the wudgy, but the cake definitely holds up its end on being fudgy. The Thai pizza; peanut sauce, mozzarella, spicy chicken, red onions, cilantro, carrots, bean sprouts and Serrano chilies. The Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park has a series of elevated boardwalks that zig zag the various ponds and wetlands. Unfortunately they're not intended for public meandering. They can be accessed by emailing the facility and scheduling a tour or by hopping a barbed wire fence... Seafood noodle soup with fresh herbs, bean sprouts, sliced jalapenos, lime juice, shrimp, squid and krab in a spicy broth. Peanut butter brownie ice cream in a chocolate dipped pretzel cone. VooDoo is a LONG way away. So, here's the local option: gourmet doughnuts available only on Fridays and Saturdays at the Fremont Goodie Shop. From left to right: Bananas Foster (banana icing, caramel creme filling, roasted and salted caramel), Southern Pecan Coffee (coffee creme filling, coffee icing, roasted and salted pecans), Milky Way (double filled with creme and dulce de leche, topped with chocolate icing and chocolate shavings) and the Black and Gold (black pepper creme filling, golden caramel sea salt icing, topped with two strips of bacon). The original 1/4 pound bacon on a stick! OK, one more time - The original 1/4 pound bacon on a stick! A giant slice of bacon grilled with maple syrup and sugar. All things chocolate in cake form... The Ripper Dog Pita: A deep fried 1/4lb all beef hotdog, loaded with cheese, grilled onions, and topped with zesty sauce, lettuce and French fries stuffed into a pita. Monte Cristo Burger; Aged Swiss, Sliced Ham, Blackberry Jam, served on French Toast This combo is sort of like mixing Jelly Belly jelly beans together to create This pink and white marbled petunia is actually an unintended mutation of what was intended to be a completely pink bloom.

Half Brenz White topped with seasoned olive oil, cheese, savory ricotta, and artichokes.
Half Grecian Goat topped with seasoned olive oil, cheese, fresh garlic, Kalamata olives, olive tapénade, Roma tomatoes, and topped with creamy goat cheese after baking.
#delicious A bbq pork bowl with brown rice, roasted sweet potato, onions, peppers and stone fruit BBQ sauce; accompanied by a sweet corn cookie and a concord grape shrub.
A shrub is a totally addicting and different beverage. It's fruit juice, soda water and vinegar.
