Unique Hotel, too expensive

Posted Sep 17, 2016
Pros: The room was small with small windows. Do not worth the price we have payed
Cons: More personal attach of the stuff
Unique hotel; Surrounded by beautiful garden. Public spaces are very nice.

Dear Customer, Thank you very much for choosing to stay at Pousada Mosteiro de Guimarães and for taking the time to post your opinion, as it helps us to get better. It is said that the Monastery was donated by D. Mafalda (wife of D. Afonso Henriques - first king of Portugal) to the canons of Saint Augustin order (1154), a 12th century Monastary. The rooms are the old monk cell - every two cells lead to a room, for the greater comfort. We take all feedback seriously and we hope to be able to welcome you again in a near future. Best wishes

A beautiful historic building

Posted Jul 23, 2016
Pros: The history, the building - stay in the old part it was a real treat. And a decent swimming pool.
Cons: Not much.
Location: 10 minutes brisk walk down hill into Guimaraes.
This hotel is worth staying in if only to be able to wander through the public rooms and the old wing where you stay in what were the monks cells. The food and service were of a high standard throughout.

Full of character but not 5 star.

Posted Apr 10, 2016
Pros: Wonderful old building, excellent staff.
Cons: Food variety on offer needs improving. Lighting a big log fire when the weather is cold, as it was some of the time, is a pretty basic requirement.
Location: Good location for the city and for exploring the far north of Portugal, which is superb and has an amazing motorway system that is mostly empty.
Good sized room with excellent views of the city, though furnishing a little tired. Excellent bathroom. Very good and professional staff. Breakfast a little disappointing with heated container failing to keep scrambled eggs and bacon hot. Dinner menu rather expensive and not really changed often enough for a supposedly 5 star hotel. The weather was cold but the fire in the otherwise superb main lounge was not lit most of the time. Even if it was they only had a couple of logs in an enormous fireplace. It would have transformed the atmosphere and have attracted more people to use it and spend money there. They has run out of wood apparently!

Wonderful Stay, Great Staff, Amazing Ambiance

Posted Mar 22, 2016
Pros: Absolutely everything!
Location: Much of the city of Guimaraes is medieval and wonderful to explore on foot. Both the palace and the castle are wonderful to explore as well.
Upon entry to the hotel, the first view is of the wonderfully restored cloister . When we checked in at this hotel, the front desk man showed us to our room. The first room we passed through was immense with gorgeous antique furnishings. This led to a sitting room, again wonderfully furnished and finally to the hallways where the guest rooms were located. Fortunately for us, our room was the farthest room from the desk. This allowed us to be awed by the stunning beauty of this hotel each time we left our room. Just looking down the immense hallway with its 25 foot arched ceiling was breathtaking every time. Our room was located right next to a stone terrace (complete with fountain) overlooking the lush, sculptured gardens. Our room was lovely, a restored monk's cell complete with an alcove window. The restaurant was beautiful as was the lounge (complete with stone fireplace). The front deskman was fabulous. He was extremely proud of both the hotel (and well versed in it's history) and the city of Guimaraes. He bent over backwards to assist us in every possible way. My only regret was that we only stayed here 1 night. In hindsight, I would have stayed as long as possible! This hotel was an EXCELLENT value and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic ambiance.

Heavenly hotel....

Posted May 16, 2014
Absolutely top notch. Beautiful gardens to walk through. Location is hard to find, and there are 2 Pousadas in the town, so be careful to load your GPS with the right one.... Dinner was very nice but a bit expensive (70 euros with a bottle of wine).

Historic hotel in lovely grounds

Interesting and comfortable hotel. Large open areas of this old monastery could have done with a bit more heating !
