Locally known as the Purple People Bridge, the former L&N Railroad bridge was built in 1872 linking Newport KY to Cincinnati OH. The last train crossed in 1987 and the last automobile crossed in 2001. After a renovation including a coat of light purple paint, the bridge reopened to pedestrians as the Newport Southbank Bridge. At over a half mile long (2670 feet), it is the longest pedestrian bridge linking two states. My first time in Cincinnati was extra special due to visiting this place. After the world tragedies of late, including the USA's massacre of African Americans in Charleston, the history here and Freedom's Eternal flame overlooking riverfront park and Kentucky truly gives one hope and peace.
