Simple hotel on the beach, reasonable price

Il Gabbianno is a pleasant, but very basic hotel on the Calabrian coast in Ciro Marina. Think of a larger, older beachfront motel in a small town on the eastern Florida coast in the mid 1960s, The views from the balconies are pretty amazing (e.g., a full moon hanging above the waves on our trip). There's a central courtyard with some nice plantings, and direct beach access. We stayed during the end of "off season" (mid-May), and the hotel was basically deserted. Really, I think we were the *only* registered guests! There has been some notable renovation in the rooms (the bathroom, for example, appears to have been completely redone in a very nice style within the recent past). The most notable issue for us in the room was the TV and electrical service in general. I don't think their electrical infrastructure is what we in the U.S. would call "up to code", and resulted in the TV hissing, popping, and randomly going off/on when we tried to view it. We finally pulled the cord and did without (that seemed to be the much safer idea). There are two restaurants, we didn't go to either one because the place seemed to be so much on a general hiatus. The town of Ciro Marina is a very pleasant, typical seaside town, with lots of neat architecture from years past. We found a nice pizza place, and we also walked into an an Italian pastry shop that had just about everything you could imagine (and the box of goodies that we purchased lasted us a few days). Rates extremely reasonable.
