Best feature is its location close to the centre

Posted Jul 17, 2017
Pros: It has a superb location next to the centre of Buxton. The hotel has grandeur and an impressive appearance.
Cons: Wifi should be available in the bedroom and a TV remote. We asked to have the bathroom window opened but nothing happened.
Location: Buxton is a charming town with interesting shops and a gardens. The opera house is a gem. The Festival has lots of interesting events.
There was no TV remote and so we had to use the limited controls on the TV itself. There was no wifi coverage in the bedroom. There does not seem to be enough staff in the restaurant for breakfast.

Palace Hotel Buxton - DON'T STAY HERE !!

Posted Jul 16, 2017
Pros: I was readily given a jug of milk from the bar to take up to our room.
Cons: All the decor is run down. There is only one lift and it can only store a single destination floor.
Location: Buxton is a lovely town, with a beautiful small theatre. Accommodation gets booked up at Festival time.
Expensive, excluding car parking, excluding breakfast. Our toilet was leaking (sewage - not clean water!), and obviously had been leaking for some weeks - as indicated by the stained grouting on the floor tiles - room 321. Liquid was visibly oozing out from a covered exit pipe. We pointed out the leak on the first evening, reception staff were uninterested. Next morning we reported the fault again and we asked for another room. We were told to come back a) after 11.00am, and then when we returned at 12.00noon were asked to come back after 2.00pm. The receptionist said the maintenance man had visited the room and said it was just clean water leaking. We asserted that it was actually a sewage leak. The receptionist was very unfriendly and gave us door keys for another room to inspect. This room was a tiny back room along corridors and down steps - completely unacceptable. We returned to reception and asked to see the manager. A manager appeared briefly after we had waited and then ignored us to go and serve behind the bar!! Eventually we did see another person, the Operations Manager, who actually came up to room 321 and took a phone photo of the leaking toilet. Finally we were given another room. The new room was ok but was available we think because it was awaiting repairs to the bathroom! But at least the toilet did not leak!! Avoid Britannia Hotels, and especially the Palace Hotel in Buxton!!

Modern clean rooms

Fantastic stay in a compact double room. Loads of room despite the title. Room was clean and seems like a newly done up room. Breakfast was great too!

The hotel has 150 years and you can tell. It's in urgent need of repairs. Also the staff needs improvements. Asked the reception for something that was missing on the room but no one ever came to help. Also the clean sheets that were to be used on the rooms were always on the floor by the room door. Also.. no telephone on the room.. not even to call reception.. First time I ever seen that.

Dissatisfied

Impressive looking outside, beautiful reception and dinning lounge area, that's all you get! Rooms shabby food dreadful barman rude. Only plus duty manager George. Will never stay in one of these hotels again.
