    Geography

Greece is a peninsular country that juts out into the Ionian Sea and Mediterranean Sea. It’s located in Europe, east of Turkey and south of Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. The country also includes over 1,000 islands, the largest of which are Crete and Cyprus. While Greece is known for its picturesque coastlines, much of the country is mountainous. The Pindus mountain range is the most prominent, while Mount Olympus is the highest point in Greece.

Best and Worst Times to Visit

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Greece because the weather is pleasant, and the summer vacationers aren’t around. It’s warm enough to swim in the sea and the sun is out. Keep in mind though, Easter is one of the most popular holidays in the country, so hotel availability can be sparse at this time. Also, many shops open in June and close in October, so you could face fewer options during the off-season.

If you don’t want to deal with swarms of vacationers and soaring temperatures around 100 degrees F, avoid visiting during August. The scorching summertime attracts visitors, which causes rates to skyrocket. Also, temperatures drop from November to February, and Greece becomes chillier and cloudier. This time span is considered one of the worst times to visit if you’ve got your heart set on beach weather.

    Lodging

Greece is a hot spot for honeymoons, family trips, and solo getaways. Here at Expedia.com, we offer the best selection of affordable hotels in Greece that suit all your vacation preferences. Whether you’re traveling with your kids or celebrating your anniversary, there’s a place for you. Some of these hotels feature restaurants with authentic Greek cuisine and complimentary breakfasts. Many of them provide a bar, 24-hour front desk service, and Wi-Fi access in public areas, too.

You’ll also find a selection of Greece resorts that include additional amenities than those offered at the hotels. Some feature full-service spas and outdoor pools, while others present poolside bars and nightclubs. When you browse our assortment, you’ll find cheap deals on resorts and hotels in Greece that fall within your travel budget.

    Things to Do

If you’re venturing to Greece to bask on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, head straight to Crete. As Greece’s largest island, Crete flaunts a picturesque coastline and secluded beaches. Balos Beach is a top pick and has been compared to the Caribbean for its white sand and clear water, while Vai is another favorite beach, surrounded by Europe’s largest palm tree forest. Island hop to other picture-perfect destinations, such as Mykonos and Santorini, which boast magnificent sea views, cobblestone streets, and the famous white-washed houses.

There’s more to this Mediterranean paradise than the aqua water and white villas stacked along the coastline. The country is steeped in history, and Athens is one of the top places to see some of the most celebrated landmarks. Visit the Acropolis of Athens, which is an ancient citadel, and discover the Parthenon that dates back to 440 BC. While you’re in town, browse the exhibits at the National Archaeological Museum, explore Syntagma Square, and then rest up at one of the nearby hotels in Athens.

Turn up the adventure during your Grecian getaway. Hike around the ancient sites in Delfi or explore the serenity of nature at the Aoos Gorge. Get some height with a rock climbing excursion at Mount Timfi, paraglide over Drama for a bird’s-eye view of the region, and whitewater raft in Tzoumerka. From sea kayaking around Kefalonia to mountain biking in Mount Olympus, you’ll see a different side of the Greek islands.

    Culture

Greece has an extensive history, and much of its past is still celebrated and preserved today. The concept of theater was developed in Athens, while the Olympic games are traced back to Olympia. The Greek people are responsible for creating marble and bronze sculptures along with the style of Greek Romantic art.

There are also a number of festivals that take place in Greece. Carnival is one of the most famous celebrations the country. During the three weeks leading up to Clean Monday, the streets become a colorful sea of carnivals and parades. Live music blares, while costumed performers dance along elaborate floats. Teams compete in treasure hunts, searching for clues throughout the city; children play games; and fireworks fly through the sky.

After observing Carnival and Lent, the Greek people host Easter, which is one of their biggest holidays. They start the celebrations on Maundy Thursday by dying eggs red, and then decorating the Epitaph on Good Friday. Easter Sunday marks the end of their 40-day fast, prompting a massive lamb feast.

    Food

Greek food follows the Mediterranean diet. Many of the dishes feature olive oil, fish, and vegetables, however, each region of Greece adds its own spin. While there are variations on many of these meals, some of the most popular fare includes dolmades, moussaka, and courgette balls. Olives and feta cheese often accompany the cuisine, while honey and baklava make for a sweet desert.

Whether you’re craving some fresh Mediterranean cuisine or a peaceful getaway at the seaside, Greece is the answer to all your vacation desires. Sort through our selection of cheap deals on hotels and flights to Greece to get your island sojourn started today.

    "Great Hotel with amazing service"
Andronis symbolises luxury with one of the finest service we have seen. Celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary we found the perfect place and the perfect host in Nefeli who made our vacation so comfortable and memorable. We stayed at Zeus – right at the top and then at Poseidon closer to the pool for 2 days each and each had its own wonders. They do serve full breakfast in the room but try going to the Restaurant - they just make it so special and it’s so much better . It can get windy and cold in the evening so table at the crest overlooking the sea may look tempting but can get problematic. Must have a meal at the restaurant for true fine dining experience – steak is the best and wine collection is super – just leave it the sommelier he knows believe me !!!!! Visit Thalami just down the hotel for some incredible food. Need a great hot chocolate and pie? – go to Skiza – again very close to the hotel. Must visit an amazing store close by which has the finest collection of marionettes. Just walk along the boardwalk and shop; no need to go far. Cruise is good fun so a must do but the sunset one– it does get pretty hot in the day. Andronis is a place to chill and experience finer things in life so don’t rush your holiday,

    "Little piece of heaven"
Experience of a lifetime! Andronis provides indescribably beautiful views of the caldera. Everything was perfect. The staff are available 24-7 to assist you with anything you may possibly need. If you ask for something, it comes right away. Need a reservation or a recommendation? They will take care of it immediately. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are so spacious with a great cave-like design. It's location in Oia is wonderful-close to everything but not in the over-crowded areas. We had the executive suite with plunge pool. You have a nice sized balcony to hang out on and a private little soaking pool to cool off in. We didn't even need to go down to the common area pool (other than a brief visit for a change of scenery). The restaurant, Lauda, provided delicious food, but the portions were somewhat small. Again-service was spectacular and the views cannot be beat! Be prepared to climb lots of stairs, but trust me it's worth every step! Thank you to everyone at Andronis. We will be back!

We had a great time at Villa Olympia. Rooms were spacious and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. The swimming pool was a decent size with a small pool for babies and free towels.

    "All inclusive Sea View "
Clean, well presented hotel. The outside by the beach is very tidy but on a nice day it gets crowded (which is understandable). There was live music each night and we were never without food or a drink which were all decent quality. We had the sea view room with a jacuzzi bath looking out to sea. It was pretty awesome and we made good use of the balcony and the bath, but most of the time you are out by the beach. It was my first all inclusive holiday but I really enjoyed it.

"Lovely hotel on the beach. "
We had a lovely stay at Elysium Hotel and Spa in Rhodes. Our room was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. The pool was one of the largest we have seen at a hotel, and nice to swim lengths or just float in. Also the sea was a very short walk from the pool side, through the garden, onto a pebble beach. it felt very safe leaving our bags etc at our sun lounger poolside to go swim in the sea (though there were plenty of loungers, toilets, showers on the private beach). we tried the different restaurants available in the evenings, and was not disappointed. Nobel on the rooftop, was a particularly lovely dinner, a special treat, with attentive friendly waiters. All the staff at the hotel were always very friendly and happy to help with anything. we also hired a car through the hotel, just for a day, which was very easy to do, and a reasonable price. I honestly can't think of any negative points of our stay. We will definitely come back again. it was a pretty perfect break.
