Portugal Hotel & Resort Travel Guide

Portugal is often overshadowed by Spain, the northern neighbor with which it shares the Iberian Peninsula. However, Portugal offers a travel experience just as fascinating with fewer crowds and at noticeably cheaper prices. You can find a number of cheap hotel deals in Portugal, particularly in Lisbon, Colmbra, Sintra, and Porto, that will help you stretch your tourism dollars even further.

Like Rome, Portugal's capital, Lisbon, spans seven hills. St. George's Castle, a fortified Moorish-style citadel, sits on the highest hill in the Moorish Alfama quarter. Closer to the Tagus River is the Jerónimos Monastery, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its phantasmagorical architecture. The most interesting of Lisbon's many museums may be the Museu da Farmácia, which covers the history of pharmacology from 4,000 B.C. to the Space Age. There are many fine Portugal hotels and designer boutiques on Avenida da Liberdade, while Rossio Square is the place to shop for leather goods, port, and cherry liqueur.

Portugal's other cities and towns are equally entrancing. Coastal Sintra, a day trip from Lisbon, has castles and buildings dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries. The English poet Lord Byron called Sintra the most beautiful town in the world. In medieval times, Tomar was the headquarters for the mysterious Knights Templars, and their architectural monuments dominate the cityscape. Guimarães to the north is another city whose historic architecture is well preserved. Guimarães is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore Serra de Arrábida, the beautiful park located in the Sado River estuary along the Arrábida Hills. Sun lovers will discover a number of secluded beaches in Arrábida perfect for romantic picnics. Film fans may recognize its stretch of road as the highway where Irma Bund shoots Tracy Bond at the end of the James Bond movie, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." In the spring and early summer, Arrábida is covered with a glorious mantle of wild flowers. Alentejo is another scenic destination in the countryside, a rural landscape scattered with olives and Portugal's famous, indigenous cork trees.

Portugal is a destination that consistently gives good value for your tourism dollars, and you'll find many top Portugal hotel packages and other great Portugal hotel deals from Expedia. Portugal isn't the travel secret it once was, though, and in the spring, summer, and early fall, hotels in Portugal can fill up fast. To ensure the best, cheap Portugal hotel deal and reservations at special discount rates, book your rooms well in advance.

    "Boutique hotel in good location"
This is a small hotel. It is modern, sparkling clean and has the most helpful staff you could ever find (and they speak English). It is near a tourist information office, tourist bus stops, and has a mini supermarket nearby. The room has a coffee maker, but the hotel lent us a kettle and decent size cups so we could make a cup of tea in our room. Guest premium wifi (free) was excellent and I was able to use it for webmail on my ipad. There is no business centre but the desk staff did my on-line check-in and printed the boarding pass for my flight out. The only downside is that there is very limited space for clothes in the room we had, so we ended up living out of suitcases on the floor. It would be ideal for a short stay where you did not need to take a lot of luggage. Our room was quiet, as requested.

    "Lovely hotel, quiet area"
This was a first couples holiday for my husband and I after 25 years of family holidays. We chose the hotel for its star rating and reviews. Neither of us play golf, so we didn't use the golfing facilities at all. The outdoor pool was lovely, and never any rush for sunbeds (although we were just at the end of the season 25 Sept - 2 Oct). The indoor pool was about 12 metres and suitable for a few lengths, with a Jacuzzi at one end. We booked the bed and breakfast option. The food was amazing - fresh produce and a huge amount of choice. You would never have to have the same thing twice! We did lots of walking - there are 3 bars/restaurants nearby, about half an hour walk. We ate in Oscars and the Tapas Bar/Restaurant - both were excellent. We hired bikes for 3 days from a company recommended in the hotel - Bike-a-Wish - they delivered & collected to & from the hotel. It was easy to arrange and the company were very helpful. The two nearest resorts are Quarteira (excellent blue flag beach) and Vilamoura (beautiful marina, very lively). We're keen walkers and the distance is do-able (approx. 6km to the nearest), but it's easy to take a taxi. We took the bus to Faro one day for a day of shopping. Actually not that many shops, mainly places to eat. I'd definitely recommend this hotel. The only reason for not giving 5* rating on the room comfort was that my bed was like a brick!!

    "Beautiful hotel"
The Tivoli victoria is an amazing hotel with beautiful views. the place to go if you want a relaxing luxury holiday. A few miles from the marina (a plus if you want total relaxation) free shuttle buses are laid on throughout the day to the marina or only 8-10 euros in a taxi. Breakfast is good as are the bar snacks and fab cocktails. Prices are reasonable for a 5* hotel Staff were all so nice, can't really fault anything except my holiday ended too soon. Will definately be going back next yr and wouldn't even consider another hotel after staying at the tivoli victoria.

    "Holiday 18 - 25.9.15"
We have just returned from holiday from this hotel. Lovely hotel could do with a little TLC in the rooms especially bathroom, towels also need to be replaced had their day I think. You felt as though you were rubbing down with sandpaper. Not a five star hotel as you had to pay for your tea/coffee facilities after the first day, not good. Journey from hotel to funchal if you are walking takes about an hour, great after a big meal to walk off. As their were six in our group it is probably cheaper to hail a cab - between 7 - 8 euros. Bus fantastic, just under 2 euros per person for journey. There is a restaurant near to the hotel called My Way - EXCELLENT Food and prices, service you cannot fault and the waiter who is called Mateus, is soo polite cannot do enough for you. Overall a great holiday and I would go back to the hotel, enjoyed it so much, very sad to go home.

    "An excellent stay"
Our stay in March was spent at this excellent hotel, staff were friendly and courteous ,food was of a very high standard and as we used the buffet rather than A La Carte there was always more than enough choice and quantity. We booked a 'side sea view studio' but were given a central studio with direct views over the pool and gardens of the sea, it comprised 3 rooms, a large comfortable lounge large bedroom and sizeable bathroom with a kitchen diner in the lounge area. The gardens require special note as they are so beautiful and well kept, the overall design of the hotel kept the buildings integrated with the gardens to give pleasant and unspoilt garden. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Madiera. There is a bus stop 100 yards from the hotel where a 2.2euro ride to Funchal can be taken about every 45mins.

This was our third visit to this exceptional hotel and it did not disappoint. All staff are lovely especially Fabio who leads from the front with extraordinary energy. Fantastic quirky design. Wonderful Spa with free sauna and jacuzzi. Can recommend " all over body massage ". Staff at Reception are very helpful for organising restaurant reservations etc. It is almost impossible to fault this very special hotel right in the heart of Old Funchal.
