Once great hotel needs renovations.

Posted Dec 12, 2016
First room was an interior room looking at the hotel's HVAC unit that emitted a noisy humming sound. The staff could not have been nicer. They moved me to another room that was perfectly fine except for the duck tape used to hold the shower head in place... The hallway carpeting is dated. The common areas are dated. A major renovation would definitely restore this property.

Apologies for the tape. After investigating it was a temporary fix that had been forgotten and certainly not the practice of The Townsend Hotel! We have gone through major renovations with all new guest rooms and our bathrooms will begin in 2017. Again, our apologies and do hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Nice hotel close to our business meeting

Posted Dec 6, 2016
Staff and facilities were great. The room was spacious and well appointed. Had several meetings in large lobby. Bell staff secured us a ride to airport in record time. All in all a great place to stay

There should be a coffee maker in the room. Other than that the hotel was great.

Thank you for your constructive feedback. There is coffee available on a complimentary basis in the lobby each day. We find our guests prefer freshly brewed rather than a sub-par coffee experience

Top of the line hotel in all categories.

Posted Jul 15, 2016
Pros: Cleanliness, room comforts, elegant bedding
Location: High end shopping in an upscale neighborhood .
A touch of elegance in a great shopping area. Staff couldn't have been nicer and professional. From the moment we pulled up to the front of the hotel to checking out, we were treated as "the most important" customer.

Elegant hotel

The experience was wonderful from beginning to end; from the time I handed my car over to valet to registration and checking in to cleaning and room service, having meals, and finally checking out. Excellent staff

The best hotel in Detroit area

Posted Jan 23, 2016
Pros: It is the only choice in the Detroit area.
Cons: See above
Location: Great restaurants - fun shopping
I always stay at the Townsend Hotel because it is charming, well-run, clean and comfortable..... but not in January.........The room was soooo cold and the thermostat, even when turned up to 76, did not heat the room past 69 degrees. Also, the restaurant, although upgraded for lunch with many new items beautifully presented, does not compare for dinner with the multitude of restaurants within blocks of the hotel. We wanted to remain in the hotel for dinner for 20 of us who came to Detroit for a funeral because of the weather. However, the absence of good vegetarian, chicken and beef choices at affordable prices, as well as an interesting menu for children, sent us walking to the steak house which, by the way, was very expensive but also had good soups, hamburgers and delicious appetizers (Ahi tuna, calamari, etc.) of large enough proportions to create dinner. And, lastly, Four Star hotels, including the Ritz Carlton, have coffee makers in their rooms for their guests. The Townsend has not kept up with the times. The coffee bar in the lobby is incomplete and the available sweet rolls and fruit cups unappealing and expensive.

Thank you for staying with us on your recent trip to Birmingham. So sorry to hear about the coldness in your room and was wondering if you let Reception know so we could make the appropriate changes? I will also certainly pass on your food comments to our Rugby Grille chefs. Our menus are changed out on a regular basis and we try our best to satisfy our guest requests. Our prices are certainly in line with other establishments in the area. That said, our children's menu is limited and we do apologize for this as overall, we are not known as a family restaurant. Regarding your comments on coffee makers in the guest rooms, to ensure freshness of product, we choose to make the coffee to order and available each day in the lobby or through In-Room Dining for your enjoyment. We appreciate your constructive feedback and look forward to the opportunity of having you return.
