Virginia State University is a public, historically black college located in Petersburg, Virginia. The university is the first fully supported, four year institution for African Americans in the United States and is one of two land-grant colleges in the State of Virginia.

The university was founded on March 6, 1882 as the Virginia Normal and College Institute after the state legislature passed a bill sponsored by Delegate Alfred W. Harris, a black attorney, which chartered the university. The state established the university to serve the needs of a population that was at the time excluded from other public institutions in Virginia. Virginia Normal and College Institute opened as a teacher training college for both male and female black students but it also included a modest liberal arts curriculum. @ Virginia State University

"I made the agreement with this host that we would have a stay until Dec 15th due to a custody battle. I was blown up about my kids being there for a few hours a week, as this was rented for a custody battle. They accused me of breaking all of their rules and threatened to kick us out. "Wonderful stay! Loved the cleanliness and beautiful aesthetic of this place. We traveled with our 2 kids. The bunkroom access is through the main room but didn't bother us one bit. Responsive host, owner thought of many great details in this home to make stay comfortable. LOVED having a washer and dryer in this space too! My kids commented on wanting to come back because they felt right at home. Thank you again for a lovely stay!"
