Let me begin by noting that Sacramento is going through a period of difficulty with accommodating and protecting the unhoused, plus maintaining its reputation as a major city for politics and business when there are tents in the streets. It's also clearing out camps right now.
I came in on a Saturday after having to move myself and my luggage across six city blocks in 90-degree heat. Based on the desk person's response to my appearance (sweaty/no car/luggage), she clearly thought I was homeless. She questioned my reservation, took a long time scrutinizing my ID and asking all sorts of questions before finally giving me my key cards. No offer of water (which happened the last time I checked in). I went up to my room, freshened up and changed my clothes, then came down for the free cookie -- her attitude was quite different.
I brought this up when I checked out the next morning with a different desk person, and got an apology. I'm writing so much to give this the proper context, but I don't think I'm going back. I never want to experience that again -- and I feel sorry for those that will in future.
