Solon Langworthy is a sweet, secluded and unique B&B in Dubuque. To me, it fit into my image of Dubuque. The house is old with a lot of character and modern appointments. Old school trust abounds. No one greeted us- but there were welcome notes directing us to our rooms; encouraging us to have a beverage out of the refrigerator and to pop popcorn and watch a movie. The house is quick 4 minute drive to Main St or the Mississippi. It’s a beautiful city (that can get raging storms but the house is solid). I can with my daughters on a whim and we are leaving with a memory.

Reasonable Place to Stay in Debuque
The house was fine but not located within walking distance of major sites. We had the suite and all the rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. Everything was self serve. We did not see anyone the two days we stayed there.

Very nice. Room was wonderful
Room was spacious, great bathroom, breakfast was ready and at your own pace (so yes we ate a little after 10am, but easy, not rushed, and like the others, the waffel's were great with fresh fruit on top!). I will stay again next time out. The outside could use some work, but it is clear the owners have been doing projects and working around the house. So all in good time.

Very nice place. WE both enjoyed it as a comfortable, clean, and restful place for our 21st wedding anniversary. No interaction with owners/managers disappointing. Why have a B & B if you can't converse with the hosts, or make requests?

Really cool converted, older house
It was slightly strange that no one was there to check us in, and that there was trust to find our room, but I did really enjoy the open kitchen in the middle of the house, so that anyone can use the fridge/freezer and grab snacks at night. The only issue I really had was that the only hot breakfast option was a waffle maker with pre-portioned batter in the fridge. It was a little thick because the batter had been sitting all day and night. Still tasty, but when I book a B&B, I usually expect to have freshly cooked breakfast by the owner/s. The whirlpool was lovely, and the overall feel of the older house was great! I would definitely stay here again!

NOT HAPPY
We thought that we were getting at least a queen size bed. The mattress was so hard that my husband couldn't sleep. The lighting was really poor and hard to get ready. We never did see anyone that ran the place.

Convenient location and quiet.
Nice location and easy place to stay when around town. Overall was quiet and didn't spend time in the room but main negatives are the internet wasn't available and there is no Cable. The room smelled musty and had no AC to run to dry it out. The room we had was two rooms /w a jack/jill style bathroom. The bathroom had no toiletries, hair dryer or standard things you would expect to find. Water pressure in shower was severely lacking.. The mattress was ok in one of the rooms but the odor was strong enough that it was an issue. Was quiet and good location though but wouldn't have felt comfortable staying there for an extended stay..

Motel 6 Quality for 3X the Price!
This B&B describes itself as romantic, elegant, and exclusive. I had a hard time finding these attributes anywhere around the property. Upon arrive you will pull up to a home with rotting rail road ties as landscaping, missing pavers from the walkway, and a dilapidated front entry. Sounds romantic, right? our room was clean and ready upon arrival, the bed was adequately comfortable and the jetted tub was nice. The strange closet that housed the toilet was...small. I'm not an extremely large man, but my knees hit the wall in the toilet cubby. I appreciated the fact that breakfast was on our own time. I enjoyed the waffle maker and the generous bowl of fruit. I was disappointed in the Aldi coffee, soda, etc. I use this stuff at home, so I'm not "too good" for these items. I just have an expectation that when I pay a premium price that I would also get something a bit gourmet. The food, along with the toiletries, etc in the room simply made the place feel cheap. And in my world cheap does not equate with elegant or exclusive. I've stayed in nicer boutique hotels for less money. I suggest that you do the same instead of booking your stay at this B&B.

Very Disappointed!
Definitely not your typical B&B. Pulling up in front of the house, you get a bad feeling. The house desperately needs to be painted and the porch boards are rotting away. Once inside, you get a better feeling, but there was an odd smell. There was absolutely no human interaction with the hotel staff. Upon arrival, we couldn't find anyone around. We then noticed a note on a door. It had our name on it, welcoming us to the B&B, giving us instructions and the phone numbers of staff. Since nothing was mentioned of "sorry we couldn't meet you in person", we're assuming the is the norm. The room key was in the lock. We looked around the room and house a bit, and noticed that many of the toiletries and even some of the items for guests in the kitchen were from the Dollar Store! Seriously? How little do they think of their guests? There is an air conditioner in the window that never shuts off unless you turn it off manually. It was too loud, we had to turn it off to sleep. There was a TV, but no cable. As for breakfast, what a joke. We had to make our own waffles and coffee! There was fruit and yogurt in the refrigerator and muffins in a warming dish. There was no ice available. There was some off name bottled water that tasted funny and generic brand sodas. I've stayed in B&Bs all over the country. I've always received top notch and personal service! This was my husband's first experience. Needless to say, neither of us were impressed.

Nice bed and breakfast in a quiet environment
When I got to the bed and breakfast, everything was already set up for my stay. Was left alone, which was one of the main factors of going to a bed and breakfast. There are stores less than a mile away, which was nice and within walking distance. Breakfast was prepared in the morning, with waffles, muffins, and a delicious fruit plate. Overall, a very good experience.

Different-All self service
First.. this is a good BnB. It was different than others i have used, but that is not necessarily bad. Some BnB the owner is right there to greet you, show you around the common areas, etc. At solon, your name is on the door. There is really no common (mansion parler) room. Structually, the building is less old mansion, and more converted 100yr old room house. There are many doors and areas which are left rust (old n beeten), but this is clearly intentional, as other areas (jet tub for example) are top notch. In the morning, breakfast was self service too. Delicious warm muffins, cut fresh fruit, and waffle maker. Compared to other BnB the lack of owner viability was odd. Then again, some owners can be a bit over bearing, so in comparison I would choose this. Solon approaches the BnB experience a little differently, and that difference may be perfect for you.

Went to the room which was right down from the crust where we dined and close to our sons college Loras. It was dark when we entered but found our note right away and it welcomed us. The master suite was cozy and perfect for our night.

host and hostess were very gracious and unobtrusive--really interesting house and neighborhood--plenty of coffee, fresh fruit, waffle fixings, definitely an older house with older house issues like bumpy floors, but all in all, we liked it! and it was much more like being home than staying in yet another motel!

Historic building in process of being renovated.
Front door and door to our bedroom did not lock. Neighborhood appeared really nice (Historic District), but not having a working lock on front door to building and especially to our room was concerning. Bathroom in our room was TEENY, with little to no leg room. In other B&Bs we've stayed in, we were always greeted warmly by staff and walked through and given direction. Not so here. Bed was extremely comfy and hot tub was delightful. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good - serve yourself. Overall, rather pricey for what we got.

Would have been great if we had Air Conditioning!
It was July 4th weekend and we decided to load up the dogs and take a drive out of Chicago. It was a last-minute decision and we decided to find a hotel as we drove. We didn't have a lot of options with the holiday and traveling with two small dogs. Solon Langworthy sounded like a great choice - once we arrived, there was no one to greet us and we had to fumble around to figure out which room was ours. A letter was left taped to the entryway. Once we got settled, discovered there was no air conditioning. Did I mention it was the 4th of July!! It was 90 degrees outside and we had dogs.... The house is old but well-maintained, and there was a DIY breakfast spread, but the lack air conditioning left us wilted and disappointed. Especially since we never saw our host and the other guests told us they not only had A/C but also jaquzzi tubs... better luck next time!

1st time at a B&B
While we don't have anything to compare it to aside from hotels, we thought this B&B was awesome. It was in a very pretty, quiet neighborhood. The building is old and needs some exterior work, but the inside was very well kept. It was really cute and nicely put together. We stayed in the Deluxe room and it was perfect for the two of us. The bathtub is amazing! We lit candles and used it both nights we were there. We loved the privacy. The other couples staying there were very pleasant and we only saw them in the morning at breakfast. We were in the area to visit Galena - the extra bit of a drive into town was worth it. The price is reasonable and I like that the owners weren't around aside from doing some gardening. This was the perfect, much needed, relaxing, romantic getaway my boyfriend and I were looking for.

A great private place to stay
This bed and breakfast was a great fit for what we wanted out of our stay. It was private and quite and much better than staying in a traditional hotel. The breakfast food was provided but it was a make your own rather than sit down with other guests and made for you...which was perfectly fine for us. I would recommend this place to our friends.

Staying in the Langworthy House was an absolute privelge, it's history and embrace so present. The hosts were available but not imposing. The breakfast offered was excellent. I would like to suggest adding more storage for clothing and more surface to place your items both in the bedroom and bath area. Dubuque offers culture, entertainment, friendly people, wonderful antique and what-not shopping and great resturaunt options. I will return and stay at the Langworthy House.

No lounge or living room
Nice neighborhood with older well kept spacious homes. Street parking. The porch boards and steps were very worn. The bedroom & bath of the 'deluxe suite' were clean and quite spacious. The refinished walls were in excellent condition and the paint colors were lovely. The bed was very comfortable. Nice classical music cd was playing for our arrival. No closet (4 pegs) and no luggage rack meant we had our suitcases spread out over the floor. The toilet had no knee room and would be uncomfortable for a long legged person. A collection of DVDs was available, as were several books. The kitchenette was nicely set up with two tables with two place settings each. Fresh fruit, juice, yogurt, sodas, waffle makings, etc for breakfast. Never saw the hosts, which was OK, however our biggest gripe was that there was no lounge, salon, or living room where we could go to relax. Our bedroom had two chairs - one rattan with a cushion and the other was a dining chair. The upstairs suite which was not occupied at the time of our visit, had it's own salon with a sofabed, which could be a second bedroom. Or a nice relaxing lounge. Perhaps we are spoiled by Napa Valley B&Bs.

Everything was lovely. The owners were a little aloof and could have offered us out-of-towners a little more advice about the local attractions. Also they said they would put breakfast out in the morning but apparently 7:30 was too early on a Sunday morning. We ended up leaving the place without our breakfast because we had to be somewhere early that morning.

Not worth it at all!
I would rate this b&b very poorly and do not think it’s worth staying for the money they are charging. The location isn’t that great and you have to drive as this is in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The guestroom we stayed in was on the second floor and it was very dark and depressing looking. The place is not sanitary in my opinion as we saw bugs in the bathroom as well as dead one near the living rm. Window. The kitchen looks something like a college setup and very mediocre to any b&b standard. Very abstract collection of dishes which makes you think whatever they found at a local garage sale is what they use. And you have to serve your own self and they don’t come around to even wash the dishes (the food we ate, the dirty dishes were still in the kitchen after we returned late on the same day). To sum it up very bad service, unsanitary, horrible design choices so save your hard earned money and stay somewhere else.

DISAPPOINTED AND MISINFORMED
My wife and I stayed here during one of my business trips. We were very disappointed with this establishment. First of all, we looked up their website and there are several misrepresentations on it. Do not go by what you read on their website. The owner was nice enough but he was not even close to being prepared for us, so he "hung" around for way too long and made us feel somewhat weird. The man was making repairs during our stay. The house was very old and not very comfortable at all. The amenities were sparse and also disappointing. No cable, and they offered a movie DVD library that was obviously his children's collection. The breakfast was not very good or plentyful. Just an overall bad experience. We will never stay here again or recommend this place. Many other complaints that could fill up a few pages!!
