Would not recommend at all

Posted Apr 23, 2015
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Customer service training, smiling, welcoming, positive attitude
We spend an average of 30 nights a year in hotels, mix of business and pleasure. This can range from 3-5 star depending what we are doing. In the last 20 years of travelling we have never encountered such appalling customer service, and it was consistent across the 3 staff involved from front desk person to duty manager. Rude and no interest in working with customer. Whilst Dunedin accommodation is often busy we would camp or drive rather than be spoken to the way we were.

We are disappointed you chose to place feedback in a public arena that omitted the true nature of the situation. This forces us to explain what really happened: You arrived at reception and thrust your booking details onto the desk. How do we know this? The Hotel Manager was in the area and observed the entire interaction. The receptionist had no booking and on searching the database, found a reservation for the following night. You made the booking error yourself online and when advised of this, were clearly embarrassed. You went online to change your booking and found you were well within the 24 hour cancellation period meaning no refund due to the special purchase conditions. The words “it’s completely our fault” and “we understand we’ve lost our money” were uttered and heard by staff and management. Our hotel was fully booked. Both receptionists tried to find alternative accommodation – 3 phone calls to adjacent motels plus searching online. You found a vacancy and asked our staff to arrange a taxi. You left and seemed satisfied. The next day you called the hotel for a refund which you admitted the night before, wasn’t possible. You were stepped through your enquiry; terms and conditions were explored and were again advised there would be no refund. You called the online booking agent who advised the same and got them to ring the hotel to check. You rang the hotel again and on all occasions were told no refund. You were happy to purchase cheap accommodation with its conditions while conditions suited you. But once they didn’t, have unfairly taken it upon yourself to run down the hotel and staff who at no time were ever rude or unhelpful as you claim. Quite the contrary – they made every effort to assist with YOUR mistake.

Thanks ever so much for posting your review of our hotel. We are delighted we were able to assist with a comfortable stay and nice surroundings. I have good news on the Internet front. We are now able to provide free wifi for all Accor members We highly recommend people who require this service join as an Accor Member - it's free and can be done once inhouse. We hope to be of service to you again in the near future.

A pleasing hotel but a bit far from downtown

Posted Apr 2, 2015
Pros: The room was okay and had a patio door opening to the lawns and parking. Staff were helpful. The breakfast was good.
Cons: I do not think so. It is a motor lodge with a restaurant and a good breakfast.
Location: It is a bit of a walk, but you can walk to see most of the sites in Dunedin.
The hotel was a bit difficult to locate due to its location on a one way street. There was plenty of parking despite an ongoing conference on the day of our arrival. The staff were very accommodating to our early arrival and directed us verbally to our room which was not hard to find on our own. The room was a standard hotel room that had a glass door that opened onto the hotel property and parking. The bathroom was okay. There is a restaurant on site with the morning breakfast (not included) was fine. We walked downtown to visit and to have our lunches and dinners. The hotel also hosts events and for the first night, the conference room next to our room hosted a Robbie Burns event for a bus tour that included bagpipes and the passing out of Scotch to those who attended the event. The second day, there was a large wedding that reserved a large part of the restaurant for breakfast, but few turned up. These events did not impact very much on the enjoyment of our room. Overall, it is a standard motor lodge. Expect a clean room, a comfortable bed and helpful service. There are no kitchen facilities in the room except for the usual hotel ones.

Thanks very much for detailing your experience during your time at our hotel. We are delighted we were able to meet most of your needs. Just a couple of things: Yes - it was a Haggis Ceremony being held in the Oast House that you heard. The haggis was being ceremonially piped in. The hotel spans a block between the two main roads in and out of Dunedin( SH1). These two main roads are one-way in a northern or southern direction, depending on which road you are on. We are a couple of minutes by car from the city centre (The Octagon) or a 20-25 minute walk on flat terrain. If you're on public transport, buses run every 15 minutes to the city centre during weekdays, one block from the hotel on George Street. We do have rooms with kitchen facilities, however the room you booked was not one of them. In standard rooms we supply kettles, free tea and coffee and a selection of items (including pod coffee) from the minibar which is a pay-per-item basis. Delighted you have taken back some warm memories of Dunedin to Canada. Thanks for posting.

Pros: Two beds and great service from the cleaners.
Cons: Better Tea bags
Location: Quite a long walk to town but close to University and the Rose Gardens.
Nice rooms with a relaxed atmosphere and short walk to the Rose Gardens.

We are delighted we were able to give you a relaxed and friendly stay. As you pointed out, we are in a unique area. We have our own park like gardens surrounding the hotel or if you need more room, 31 hectares encompassing the Botanic Gardens across the road. Thanks for posting.

Lovely hotel, not far from the town centre by car.

Posted Mar 26, 2015
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
Location: Dunedin town centre is close but we saw little of it due to our schedule.
Arrived early evening after a long car journey, staff very welcoming and helpful. We departed quickly for the Royal Albatross Centre to see the albatross and the blue penguins. Again only here for one night so not much time to assess the area. We visited the Railway Station in the morning we left, a fine old building, but unfortunately we weren't able to take one of the excellent railway trips due to our hectic schedule.
