Beautiful hotel too near the train.

Posted Jul 25, 2017
I loved the staff and hotel even though our room was terribly small. Unfortunately, our room overlooked the depot for the train. We heard toots of the horn and blasts of steam from engine maintenance throughout the night, especially early in the morning. It kept us from rest and made sleeping in while on vacation next to impossible.

Thank you for your review of the hotel. We appreciate your feedback and comments. I apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay. Due to our close location to the train, we do hear many of the noises that come from the trains, and so we do give guests an option for our interior rooms, which are much quieter. Also, being a historic hotel, many of our rooms are smaller than the modern hotels. Thank you for staying with us and again we apologize for the issues you experienced during your stay.

Love this hotel

Posted Jul 24, 2017
Pros: It was great that we received vouchers for breakfast. The staff also had great recommendations for dinner.
We've been going to Durango for years but this was the first time staying at the General Palmer. We love the charm.

Nice boutique hotel close to the action

Posted Jul 24, 2017
Pros: Close to activities, especially the train
Cons: internet WiFi service at end of hall
Location: D&S RR, shops, historic buildings, outdoor activities
Hotel staff was great, room was nice, right next to the train station. Only downside was the internet connection in our room at the end of the hall in the Palace wing did not work well. Had to go out onto balcony to get service, which by the way was a nice area to sit and relax.

Great historic hotel with a central location

Posted Jul 20, 2017
Really enjoyed my stay here. The outdoor area on the second floor is the best place to watch the narrow gague trains depart, and the hotel is right in the middle of all the action in Durango.

Outstanding Experience

Posted Jul 19, 2017
Pros: Everything! You also get a voucher for a hot breakfast at a great place across the street of the hotel. Not just a cheap little breakfast.
Cons: I truly can't think of anything.
Location: We went to Durango to ride the Durango Silverton train. The hotel in next door to the station. Very convenient.
Very nice hotel! Best Bed I believe I have slept in away from home. Very Clean. Everything was topnotch.

Great hotel in the heart of Durango.

Posted Jul 18, 2017
Pros: Can't think of anything I didn't like.
Cons: The bed was a bit soft for my tastes but others may like that. If I could have a dream addition to this room it would for a real espresso machine.
Location: Within easy walking distance of the DSNGRR train. Also easy access to downtown, restaurants, shops, etc. Visit Ken and Sue's for dinner.
We stayed two nights in the hotel, riding the train in the day between. The hotel was excellent. The water pressure was fine, the hot water nearly instantaneous, and the shower head was high enough to accommodate a 6'4" person. The terry cloth bathrobes were classy and of high quality as were the towels. The bed was soft for me but that's a personal preference. The lobby staff was very pleasant. The elevator (a snug contraption from bygone days) really made an impression on the kids. I'd recommend using it only to take your bags upstairs and climbing the stairs at other times. The lobby coffee was of high quality and the breakfast arrangement with the Lone Star Cafe next door was perfect! If you hit the Lone Star, DO NOT order anything 'cowboy' sized until you speak to the waiter. Those portions are enormous for the price and are more than most people can comfortably consume. The sitting room, complete with period furniture, was comfortable and had a nice selection of books to please almost anyone. When we come back to Durango we will definitely revisit the General Palmer!

Bed and Breakfast atmosphere

Posted Jul 17, 2017
Pros: The Victorian look
Location: Closer to the railroad for the Durango-Silverton train ride. Just in the heart of Durango, close to everything.
It was like staying at a Bed and Breakfast in downtown Durango. Friendly staff to go with it. Can't wait to come back for another stay. And it was next door to the railroad station so not for to go to catch the next train out of town.

Great Victorian Stay in Downtown Durango

Posted Jul 14, 2017
Pros: Room, atmosphere, breakfast at the Lone Spur was exceptional.
Cons: Booking & charging systems
Location: Right downtown, walking distance to everything
The hotel and room are excellent, a real step back in time to the Victorian era. Hotel staff were excellent: friendly and helpful. Parking is plentiful and easy to get to. You are right in downtown Durango so it's an easy walk to the Train, drinks, dinner, and shopping. Be careful with reservations and charges though, double check everything. We booked 3 nights through Expedia, the hotel called about one week before our trip to tell me there was a mistake and our 3rd night was "overbooked", we would not have a room that night. They were not helpful to resolve this and simply referred me to Expedia. Expedia's customer service took great care of us finding a different hotel downtown and compensating us for the inconvenience of moving, this saved our vacation, I couldn't recommend Expedia more. When it came time to check out of the hotel my credit card was charged for three nights, even though we only stayed for the two nights that the hotel said we had a reservation for. This was quickly fixed by the receptionist once I pointed it out, but I had to catch the mistake and point it out. All in all I would certainly recommend this hotel, just double check everything. Hopefully they will get their reservation & charging systems worked out in the future.
