We had a Garden Loft room which was beautifully appointed and had the added benefit of a visit by a family of monkeys every morning. The staff were without exception charming and helpful. If you stay there, prepare to be asked by every single one how you are every time you see them. You aren't allowed to open a door or press a button for the lift.
The food was of a very high standard and the breakfasts offered the widest array I've ever seen. One minor quibble is that the lunch, dinners and room service include mainly some very rich and fancy stuff. Again the quality is great, but my wife prefers food on the plain side and her options were quite limited. Outstanding in every respect.

I was on vacation in Durban with my mom. I booked a room with two beds but when I arrived they only had rooms with one queen bed. I was a little disappointed about this but the next day after breakfast we went back to our room only to find our room cleaned and our bed changed. I was very impressed with how quickly they worked to fulfill my request.
Breakfast was included in my booking. It was supposed to be a buffet according to the booking but apparently if the hotel isn't filled to a certain capacity they don't do the buffet. This ended up being ok because they had some good items on the menu and a cold meats, fruit, cereal bar. I was very happy with the food.
The staff were amazingly friendly, from the receptionists to the servers and bar tenders. We enjoyed to free shuttle to the nearby beach and Gateway mall. There aren't any restaurants in walking distance to the hotel but the mall has plenty of eating options. It's currently the biggest mall in the Southern Hemisphere.
The rooms were kind of small, but extremely clean. Bathroom and rainforest shower was good although the there was a funny smell from afar from time to time. Furniture, bedding and decor were relatively modern. The lobby area and restaurant were very well decorated. It really did give it a modern, boutique feel.
I would recommend this hotel if traveling without children.

Arriving at the main entrance was a little daunting, not usual to find metal gates across the entrance, however upon entering a warm welcome, made me feel a bit better. The hotel was once a major hotel in Durban but over the years has been taken over by other more impressive and more expensive options. Park View is now a retirement home, and caters to the seniors market. I entered my room, a large well decorated room, small kitchenette with fridge and microwave, crockery and utensils, flat screen TV, very comfortable bed and plenty of handing wardrobes, in room safe, iron and ironing board, nice clean bathroom wet room shower, (water pressure a bit low) but OK.
Breakfast served in main dining room is extra, and you need a voucher from Reception, pleasant, efficient staff and a nice variety on offer, dont miss bacon on Sundays. I stayed 4 nights and enjoyed my stay very much, staff very pleasant and service good.

This Protea Hotel, and there are several, is convenient to the beach an Durban's many restaurants. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Plenty of room to work. Usually a fridge and micro wave if you can't resist taking home your restaurant goodies. Not a hotel to hang out in. You can get a drink and watch a little soccer in the small bar. That's about it. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

This location isn't exactly in the hub of things but I went to Durban for business so the location was perfect for my needs. The hotel is across from a beautiful park so each morning I ate a lovely breakfast looking onto the greenery. It's a quaint hotel with only 20 rooms but because of this, service is very attentive.
Most people in the comments scoffed at the shower being in the bedroom but it was actually a smart move. Had the shower and sink been walled off, both the bathroom and bedroom would have been extremely cramped. This opened everything up nicely.
As I said, service is very attentive and pleasant. Be aware that room service is not available round the clock. I believe they stop taking orders at 8:30PM for a final service at 9PM. This is important to know if you are jet-lagging on your first day in the country or arrive back to your room after the cut-off time. The staff were kind enough to call me in my room on the first night of my stay to give me a "last call" for dinner. I was very grateful b/c had they not done so, I would have gone to bed hungry (I traveled 35+ hours from Texas and was exhausted). I had the 200g steak. OMG, it was huge and delicious. There are delivery services around so you can always call up dinner if you miss the room service time.
Bring slippers for the carpeted floors in the bedroom. I was there for a week and they could use a good vacuuming and honestly, probably a shampoo. Otherwise, this place ranks highly on my list of hotels.
