Good location in need of better staff management

Pros: Room was clean, bed was comfortable and the room was quiet.
Cons: General staff management is poor and needs improvement. No room available on arrival, given a twin room, tv not working properly etc. Easily fixed.
Location: Reasonable location near the town centre and railway station. I decided to walk to the railway station be warned its all up a steep hill.
Hotel was located close to railway station and town centre, on the banks of Wear river. There aren't many hotels in Durham so not much to choose from. I think this lack of competition leads to general sloppiness of standards and staff. I arrived at 12.30 pm (normal check in is from 2pm). I was told I couldn't check in until after 2pm, no one bothered to check if there were any rooms available when I arrived (surely there must have been rooms available mid week in the middle of January). I had to come back to the hotel (an inconvenience for me) later in the day to check in. I contrast this with my stay at the Hilton in Manchester - I arrived at the same time on a Sunday and had a room immediately. When I did get my room I had been given a twin room - why give a twin room to a single person staying mid week? I did complain and they reconfigured the bed, why not simply change my room? The hotel seemed very quiet without many guests so surely this could not have been a problem. The room itself was clean and quiet though as usual with many hotels - it was too hot despite my best efforts with the air conditioning controls. The TV had a fault as well - the voice and picture were out of synch but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of trying to get that sorted as I was only staying one night. The breakfast was ok but again sloppy room management. Tables not cleared, no one to great to you when you arrived or show you where anything was. Food was ok but not brilliant.

Pros: It is well located, offered a good breakfast and leisure facilities.
The only problem with our stay was information about the hotel both on line & the room TV was either lacking or out of date. For example my wife was looking forward to again using the hotels Italian menu type restaurant enjoyed during a previous visit only to find it had changed.

Cons: Tea urn at breakfast could have been hotter (I turned the temperature up on day 2).
Good easy check in. First room was cold but in no time the maintenance man was there, he had to leave but was back in no time with a key for another room which was toasty. Breakfast was good and lasted until midday at the weekend. We didn't have time to use the pool/spa facilities. Would stay there again.

Nice but Noisy

Excellent staff! Check in and check out very efficient with good staff. Car parking £8 for the day. Leisure facilities good and good location for Durham amenities. Very accessible. Room was a good size and clean and modern. The only issue with room was that you could easily hear noise from adjacent rooms. This included the fact that those in the room next to us had sex between 0531 and 0534 hours. I was only jealous. Breakfast was good and would recommend staying here but ear plugs might be a bonus!

Great location

Pros: High standard but quite relaxed
Cons: Stains on carpet
Location: Centre of Durham. Easy walking distance to cathedral area and castle etc.
Lovely hotel. Good breakfast and evening meal. Gym and swimming pool excellent. Few stains on bedroom carpet but still a lovely room. Would definitely stay again.

Conveniently located hotel in centre of Durham

Pros: Proximity to station and centre of Durham
Cons: The bedrooms were dated, scruffy and dark
Location: Near to the station and town centre. Right on the river.
The hotel is four star and whilst it's in a good location and with good facilities, the bedrooms were really dated and very dark. Breakfast and dinner were good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel also had the bonus of having a fitness suite which is well equipped and a swimming pool. Would recommend for a business trip or for a weekend away.

Great central location

A great hotel in a central location by the river. 2 min walk into the town centre where there are lots of bars, restaurants and historic sites. Friendly helpful staff, nice & clean room with everything you need. Would definitely stay again.
