Eccentric old building

Posted Aug 18, 2017
Pros: The sheer difference compared with the usual.
Cons: Remote reception location means staff are not always visible
Location: Quiet country lane and adjoining church with extensive grounds. Situated in the English Riviera close to good beaches and the river Dart villages.
An old timber frame building full of faded oil paintings, tapestries and suits of armour. It is like wandering into a 16th century time warp. The room (called Elizabeth 1st!) was comfortable with original stone frame windows and single glazing. The bathroom was very dated but everything worked with plenty of clean linen. If you want a very eccentric place to stay, you cannot do better than this. Beautiful location tucked away in a quiet lane with superb outside dining / entertainment areas.

Good potential. Requires better management.

No one on reception on arrival. The young members of staff tried their best and were pleasant, courteous and helpful. But seemed to lack training and direction. The evening meal service was slow despite the restaurant being not fully occupied. The starter and main courses were very good. We waited ages for pudding, when it came it was burnt and inedible. Alternative was offered but we'd had enough. On checking out no one was available for 15 minutes or so and there were two other guests waiting to check out. The card machine wasn't working and my bill had items on I had not had, they had been crossed out. Not very professional.

Room 9

Posted Jul 2, 2017
Pros: it's largely as it was 35 years ago, when I used to stay occasionally
Cons: re-route fan
Location: Quiet location, 10 minutes to Brixham
A pleasant room, with a four poster bed, an enormous bathroom, and a walk in wardrobe area. It also has an extractor fan for the kitchen between the bedroom and kitchen window

Character in abundance

Friendly welcome, lovely clean front facing room. Lovely breakfast. Lighting bit dim and no heating in bathroom - my only slight criticism. Loved the neighbouring church bells Sunday morning

Staff were lovely. Dining room full of character. Room lovely apart from noise of extractor fan possibly from kitchen as there was a frying smell. This didn't spoil a lovely stay. The staff were just lovely!

Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Lovely old 13th century building - very creaky floor boards. The staff are excellent-very happy to help. Our satnav had problems with the Post Code id- spent ages in the pouring rain and dark trying to find the hotel.Food is excellent.
