Nice guest house

Posted Apr 17, 2017
Pros: Mariners is a nice, clean guest house with a warm welcome, good breakfast and parking
Cons: The bathroom in our room was a bit tired, although spotlessly clean
Location: Great situation for the Riviera Centre and a short stroll to the beach and town centre
We stayed for two nights over Easter to attend an event at the Riviera Centre.

Good B&B experience

Posted Apr 13, 2017 on Hotels
Good value, immaculately clean and great service. Only downside for us was our room was really too small for the double bed (difficult to walk around it) and disappointed there was no parking available for us as only space for three cars. Luckily having grown up in Torquay I knew where to go, but others may get caught out by the one hour street parking limits between 8:00 to 6:00pm in the whole area.

Hello James, thanks for your review and overall 5/5 score. Regarding the parking, yes we did have 12 in the Saturday you were here, so our 3/4 private parking spaces were taken, which are on a first come first served basis, to be fair to all...We do however, when parking is full, direct customers to a road that is less than 100 yards away, that has lots of un-restricted parking that has never been a problem. Did exactly what we expected. Clean well kept accommodation, friendly welcome and wholesome breakfast. Great value for money. Location worked well for us, and onsite parking a bonus.

You get what you pay for

Posted Oct 10, 2016 on Hotels
I realise that you get what you pay for so try not to be overly critical for a budget B&B. Therefore I can accept that the room was small and the shower room dated. However there was also no heating when I arrived and the room was cold, the same on the second day of the stay, the room was cold when I returned from the seminar which I was attending, and the shower was not hot. The towel rail leaked, and as it was off all day the towels were damp in the evening. Worse though were the breakfast hours, with breakfast available from 8:30 onwards. My schedule meant a rushed breakfast on one day, and on the second I had to find and eat breakfast at another hotel. For dinner I arrived back on Friday too late to eat in nearby, and the hotel does not allow take away meals to be brought into guest rooms. This was a further inconvenience, but I understand that this may be common practice in guest houses. Positive points were that the room was clean, the bed comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. Find a hotel that matches your needs - this one did not meet mine. But if the facilities met with you schedule requirements and other expectations then it would be fine.

Hello again and thanks for your review, although we are confused by some of your comments: The room you stayed was a standard sized double room (we have 3 King Rooms also) and the en-suite in this room was new and installed in April 2016 with a brand new shower and flooring. The heating generally goes on an at 7am and is left on until 11pm, depending how cold it is. We felt is was mild when you arrived, but then put the heating on when you did appear, as we informed you and the heating was left on until 11pm, We believe you arrived back to your room after this time. Yes, we did find shortly after that the towel rail had leaked, and we had our local plumber around the day after to fix this...We don'd understand your comments about the towels? Every guest has fresh towels on arrival and can have new towels every day after if they leave them in the shower the following morning. (We have a notice displaying this in every en-suite). You say "Worse though were the breakfast hours, with breakfast available from 8:30 onwards" - ? Our breakfast hours are 08.30am-09,30am Monday to Sunday, which you will find is relatively standard to have a 1 hour slot, with other local guest houses having a shorter time period. We go out of our way during peak times, to extend this to 08.00am-09.30am. Yes, you are right in that most guest houses don't allow takeaways as stains and strong smells are difficult to remove. Had you mentioned something to us, if this was before 11pm, we would no doubt have allowed you to eat one in our Breakfast Room as we have allowed for others before. Thank for your final comments regarding the cleanliness of the room, the comfortable room and that we were friendly and also helpful (remember getting our iron and ironing board for you...). Nice, tidy, clean, friendly

Posted Jul 12, 2017 on Hotels
A very pleasant stay. Had all we needed, a nice room with a bathroom. Clean and tidy. Breakfastroom also nice and tidy. Rooms a little small but that was no problem at all. The well organised house made up for that. A few minutes walk to the town centre. Very nice host. English breakfast-very perfect prepared and served. Highly recommend Mariners Guest House
