Crystal clear waters at Wander Lake
#TroveOn Endless ducks at Wander Lake! Hiking through trails Around UAF. From the parking lot by the pond people fish at, go left and about 2 miles down (if that) is this! Something extraordinary was happening in the sky! Fall is such a short season here that it is important to get out and see the colors while you can! A walk through Creamers Field can leave you awestruck with its beautiful display of yellows and oranges. Our Lovely field after getting lost among the trails. I think they do plant research here? Dog sledding in Alaska - one of my best memories from there! :) This frost has been here for 2 months now. It is amazing to me how nothing melts. I wasn't leaving Alaska until I saw the Aurora Borealis and it showed up. It put on seven amazing shows for us before we had to head back down to the lower 48.
http://www.liferidingshotgun.com/2015/08/alaska-last-frontier.html Check out those beautiful trees! The James W. Dalton Highway, usually referred to as the Dalton Highway (and signed as Alaska Route 11), is a 414-mile (666 km) road in Alaska. It begins at the Elliott Highway, north of Fairbanks, and ends at Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean and the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Once called the North Slope Haul Road (a name by which it is still sometimes known), it was built as a supply road to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in 1974. It is named after James Dalton, a lifelong Alaskan and an engineer who supervised construction of the Distant Early Warning Line in Alaska and, as an expert in Arctic engineering, served as a consultant in early oil exploration in northern Alaska.
#snow #blue Ice glasses on ice plates on the ice bar. The appletini is all real, though. (aurora ice bar, chena hot springs resort)
#BarLove Colorful ukulele display. I'm not the proud owner of a yellow one. I think I'll name her Uli. The staff was incredibly helpful and it's overall just a neat little shop on College Rd. Cooooldest winter I've ever experienced. ⛄️❄️
#alaska Winter scene at creamers field We drove from morning to sunset... Almost there, Coldfoot!
#snow Winter wonderland #fairbanks #alaska Halloweens coming :) The Aurora Ice Bar is one of Chena Hot Springs awesome attractions. Its located inside their pretty impressive ice museum. $15 gets you a tour of the museum and another $15 gets you their signature (and very strong) appletini. You can sip it from a fur covered stool at the bar. Everything, including the glass you can keep (which is traditionally smashed on the ground outside the museum) is made of ice.

#BarLove Alaska has some of the most amazing views I have ever seen- including web you look straight up! The sky is so big here and the clouds seem to follow their own rules! Lake on the forest trail Taken at the park next to UAF. It was cool enough that the mosquitoes weren't out en mass yet but all the snow that's (still) melting has left the ground verrrry soggy. Bring walking boots! The terminal building at Fairbanks Airport. Another picture of the lake at the UAF sledding hill The boreal trail! (beautiful but deadly. Bring lots of mosquito spray!)
Northern lights, the most beautiful thing, i've ever Seen! Creamers field's Taiga Trail is quickly becoming one of my favorite places for a hike. The trail is short (maybe about 2 miles out to and around wander lake and back) but it is beautifully maintained and offers a great view of wildlife and waterfowl. Very peaceful Old apartment building by the golden heart plaza needs some renovating :) A stopover at Joy, on the way to Arctic Circle, Alaska
#WinterWonders A mushroom walks into a bar and asks the bartender if she'll go on a date. She said no and he asks So green on the trails behind UAF. I wanted to fall asleep there haha That's Brad the young chap who drove me across arctic circle to Coldfoot for the night. #Snow is like his second nature!
#blue The World Eskimo Indian Olympics is AMAZING to watch. There are many sports unique to the culture and athletes come from around the Arctic area to compete. There is a Miss WEIO competition among the ladies and they dress up in full regalia which is absolutely stunning. This picture was taken on the opening night during the blanket toss event. 40 or so volunteers toss an athlete up into the air on this giant blanket and they are judged on the height of the jump and the grace in which they complete it. The thing that amazed me the most was that they landed on their feet back on the blanket! It was really great to see! Tickets are usually $10-$12 per day and the event covers 4 days. Sven's Basecamp Hostel in Fairbanks has some of the coolest accommodation options--such as this treehouse, a tipi, cabins, wall tent glamping, etc. Sven also has a couple cute dogs and one teeny tiny husky puppy that everyone fought over to hold. Rent canoes here as well. Showers are costly (25 cents per minute!) but only because their water has to be brought in via truck so they try not to use too much too quickly. Wifi available.
More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com Morning in Fairbanks AK, little of the Aurora in the distance. On the Horizon is Mt Denali/McKinley unbelievably beautiful Awesome restaurant, very popular place. The food was good but I've always been partial to dessert ;) There's something unexpectedly pretty about fireworks in the A rainy walk through the park :) Nothing like a caribou and swiss sandwich from the Loose Moose Cafe (Airport Rd). Not only do they have sandwiches, but also offer ice cream and sell various alaska meat products from inside the shop (think buffalo, reindeer and caribou)
#restaurant Another spectacular show of northern lights #alaska #northernlights #lifeatexpedia The love of a man and a cinnamon bun the size of his face... Check out this little guy! So cute! And so trusting! Lol Shake maker at the colorful, exciting Loose Moose Cafe on Airport Rd. a beautiful sight ;) Saw this guy chilling on the door of Grassroots Guitar Ctr on College Rd. pretty sweet! I stayed here in the glass gazebo for a night and found it was a pretty good hostel, however I like Sven's Basecamp Hostel in town more.
Billie's is close to the bus system and walking distance to a few attractions in Fairbanks though, and she (Billie the owner) has two overweight pugs and a homey feeling. Free showers unlike Sven's which was one pro over the other hostel.

More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com Everybody I've spoken to and anything I read about Fairbanks said that the museum was a major highlight...I personally found it quite small and disengaging, although I think if you watch one of the movies (IMAX?) available, you'll have a better experience. I had also already been to the native heritage museum in Barrow, AK which had similar information and relics/displays on native culture and wildlife etc.
More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com So this is jet tea! It's the first time I've ever had it. It's apparently a tea smoothie with flavoring (mandarin in this case, if you're wondering...) Delicious! A vendors fair over the weekend with lots of art, jewelry and food A fun spot to have a drink and people watch. Sample six 4 ounce beers for $12. If you go for a pint, the porter and stout are particularly nice. If in Fairbanks, you GOTTA eat here. Outstanding food and drink, service, and a pretty location right on the river with an outdoor patio option. Tried the signature blackberry limeade and got UH-MAZING pear and gorgonzola bruschetta (in the photo). Also tried the smoked salmon BLT and king crab melt sandwiches.
More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com I went to the hockey game it was army agents air-force and army won 6 to 0 Statue near entrance of Museum of the North on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Sven's Basecamp Hostel office...cutest cabin I've seen in AK so far. Loved this hostel in Fairbanks.
More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com Made it to Alaska! The amazing Aurora Borealis north of Fairbanks. #northenlights #auroroborealis #alaska #lifeatexpedia The unnoticed flowers Antler Arch at museum in Fairbanks Alaska. It's a Awsome place to hangout with friends and family 👍🏼 One of the best places to view northern lights aka Aurora Borealis in north america, is Fairbanks, Alaska. The day I captured this picture, the aurora lit up the whole sky with green and pink colors for almost 2 hours. Inuit people call them 'dancing of the gods' and is a surreal experience. Best time to see the lights is between September and March and is one of the world wonders #lifeatexpedia
