The panoramic city view makes it worth the stay

The hotel is polished and well located, walking distance to the center of town and yet just out of the way to be quiet. Our room, as promised, was a city view on the fourth floor. Without that extraordinary room, I would have been very disappointed.
This is a high end hotel and very well appointed. But the recent renovation appeared to be more about style and less about function. The bath tub/shower was very tight with the shower doors encasing the tub to the point where it is difficult and unpleasant to move; looks great but is not pleasant to use. The walk in closet was also too dark and when I pulled out the drawer, the front end fell forward. The kettle was set on a tray on a shelf within the closet but there was no outlet so we had to move it to the desk. Half the hangers were on the far end of the closet so hard to reach and secured so they couldn't be moved.
The hotel is about appearances and the desk staff, although helpful, seemed to take their cue from the cliche that being officious is a virtue. That said, the wait staff at breakfast were very nice and went out of their way to assist.
All this was made up for by the panoramic view of the Duomo, the Palazzo Vecchio tower and even a glimpse of the cross on top of Santa Croce. When the church bells ring across the city, it is a magnificent thing to experience. I expect the rooms overlooking the river would also be lovely. But without a view, it offers little more than the pretense of wealth.
