Clean Hotel with adequate accommodations.

Pros: The staff was friendly and happy to work with us on a late arrival to access our room. A $4 discount for a breakfast buffet at a restauraurant close.
Cons: The elevator broke down the day we were leaving, but luckily we were only on the third floor and we taking luggage downstairs and not up.
Location: Close to train station, we walked to hotel. Close to Duomo buildings and square.
Three of us stayed two nights and the room was large enough for two beds accommodating us comfortably.

Such a disappointment

Pros: Nothing
Cons: Better communication between the "hotel" staff and customers.
Location: Great location in the middle of everything. The only positive thing the hotel has to offer.
I traveled to Italy in February 2015 and booked a room in the Tourist House while I was in Florence. I got an email from the hotel a few days before I was scheduled to stay there asking what time I was scheduled to arrive. I confirmed my arrival time and did not have any more communication until the day of my arrival. When I arrived at the hotel I was shocked by how the inside of the building looked. The stairwell was poorly lit and looked like an unfinished stairwell in a parking garage so I was a bit leery. When I got upstairs to the reception desk, I was told that there was a flood so I had to be moved to another hotel. I asked why I was not notified about the change beforehand but the receptionist did not have an explanation for me. She said that she would have someone walk me over to another hotel 50 meters away. The person that walked me to the other accommodations did not speak for the five minute walk. I do not know if there was a language barrier or if that was her temperament but I thought it was rude. As bad as I thought tourist house was, the new accommodations were far worse. The rooms smelled, the sheets were stained, and the place was just dirty overall. I wanted to leave and go to another hotel but it was Valentine’s Day so I knew another hotel would not be available. After having pleasant hotel experiences in the other hotels where I stayed in other Italian cities, this was a huge disappointment. My advice to anyone reading this review is DO NOT

Tourist House Duomo

Pros: Location
Cons: Availability of staff
It was an okay experience and average place to stay for $80 USD a night. I would recommend it as a budget place to stay. It has a good location near the Duomo and is easy to find from the railway station. The check-in time is inconvenient. Nobody is there until 2 pm, so if you arrive early, you have no place to stow your bags. Rooms are clean, but would probably recommend spending a bit more to have a place with a breakfast.

Bait and switch

Pros: Not one thing.
Cons: How about honesty? Apparently they are notorious for this sort of thing.
On arriving at the hotel (2 nights, 4 beds, private bath), they took my credit card payment, then told us the bathroom was out of order and they were substituting a nice bed and breakfast a block away. The desk clerk seemed pleasant and helpful, so we followed her assistant 3 blocks to the door of another hotel. The substituted place was awful! NOT a bed and breakfast, no private bathroom, and the communal bathroom was layered in months of filth (see pictures). The manager refused to do anything about the dirt. By the time we got back to the Tourist House, the desk clerk was gone and we could not locate her after returning 4 times that day and the next morning and phoning. So we had to stay one night in that place. We used the toilet out of necessity but did not use the shower. The next night I found another hotel, same price, but clean and comfortable. HOWEVER, although I have emailed and tried to contact the Tourist House asking for a refund for the second night, there is no response. Do not trust these people. She knew perfectly well what she was sending us to and she knew I had young granddaughters with me.

Convenient Location in Florence

This hotel is a 5-7 minute walk (even when dragging luggage) from Santa Maria Novella Train Station. It was not a difficult walk even for mature travelers, like ourselves. It is in a nice old neighborhood of hotels, shops and diverse restaurants. The surrounding neighborhood seems very safe, except for the ubiquitous seedy characters that you always encounter within a block of a major city train station. It is difficult to find the small sign for Tourist House Duomo on Via Cerretani until you realize that THD is actually inside Hotel Perseo. There is a convenient elevator and the manager, Michele, is pleasant enough and helpful. He is often absent, however, and several times I had to admit arriving guests at odd hours who were knocking on the door and then explain to them how to reach Michele by phone in order to check in. I assume that these guests may not have been specific enough with Michele about their arrival time. The WiFi did not work in my room. I had to use the hotel's front desk computer at times, which they do make available to guests, but this was not always convenient. The hotel appears to be an older Palazzo, and not modern in appearance or personal conveniences. The rooms are large but dingy and poorly lit. The furniture is older and not the most comfortable. My mattress was a bit lumpy but adequate if you get tired enough. Breakfast was not served in the hotel, but rather you are given a voucher which you must take (Continued in the next text box)
