Despite the terrible effects of load shedding, staff were doing their best and very quite friendly and helpful. But it was my impression that like their surroundings, BON Hotel is dying, and cutting back on lighting, water, and amenities in the rooms is their attempt to survive, but it doesn't of course add anything to the stay. I felt bad for the friendly staff that do work hard to keep the whole thing afloat but Bloomfontein is in a sad state of degeneration, much like the majority of South Africa.

Basic but comfortable
We stayed one night with the whole family on route from Cape Town to the Kruger Park. It was a comfortable enough hotel and conveniently located. On the negative side. The walls are paper thin, so if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs.

On arrival the booking was not paid which was the error of the person capturing the booking.Thus causing a delay to check in. Receptionist at the time was very kind and helpfull. The rest of the stay was peaceful and we had a good rest after a very busy day in Bloemfontein.

The price I paid for the lovely room was in fact unbelievably low, thanks to Expedia. I wished I had booked for more days there than I did. The room was befitting of a King. It made me feel big in my boots. There was no negative feelings about the surrounding area especially since I was ferried to the doorstep on arrival and whisked away by the hotel's shuttle service at departure time. The bed was just what I needed after an extended travel time to massage my weary back and in fact, the whole body..

Never again. I chose the hotel because of their business and government worker clientele. I expected a professional standard and a peaceful, quiet place to work. I received the opposite. Albeit a large group of young school boys were staying at the hotel, but doors slamming, running and yelling in the hallway only quieted down at 23:00 and began again before 5:00. I could neither work or even get a decent nights sleep. My requests to move to a different floor was ignored (surely an upper floor room was available, the restaurant was deserted and I saw very few guests above the age of 12.) A security guard was sent up twice to quiet the boys. He proceeded to knock loudly on doors and walk noisily up an down the hall, but the resulting silence lasted about 90 seconds after he left. The staff seemed very kind and concerned, but ineffective. A simple policy to isolate groups that would likely be problematic with noise seems a logical solution? Or a “quiet” floor possibly? I didn’t arrive with blue flashing lights, but as a paying guest, did expect the common courtesy of peace and quiet.

Very clean spacious room with very good service. Only problem was the noise in the hall 12 o'clock at night. Could not sleep after that again. Also parking gate did not want to open on entering.

Computer systems do not interact with hotels. Com real-time. I had to print my own confirmation to prove payment. Otherwise, a pleasant stay. Hotel interleads into shopping mall,a great feature.

Nice hotel
Protea Central in Bloemfontein was an excellent experience. From check-in to check-out everything was well taken care of. The hotel offered a complimentary shuttle service to Tourist Centre from where I was to get my bus to Pretoria. I will definitely put up in this hotel when visiting Bloemfontein again!

not a nice area to stay in
arrived after long drive - space to park outside which was good however web address shows mall and this wouldn't work in my gps so a street number would have helped as much of burger is one way. receptionist eventually arrived and check in was quick and efficient. party going on in second floor and lift was set to stop there every time so long wait to get to my room which was a good size but "a bit tired" after washing and changing I left the room and smelled smoke in the corridor (no smoking floor) a room further down the corridor had an open door with two men smoking inside (no smoking room) I insisted they close the door which they eventually did. had a beer in the bar and went into the restaurant for a very nice meal. however towards the end I smelled smoke coming from the kitchen area and called the maître d asking her to take steps to stop it. by that time the cigarette smoke was detectable in the entire restaurant. It did stop. slept well and, despite the active party, there was no noise overnight or in the morning. nice breakfast. I wouldn't recommend or stay there again. the place needs a shake up and firm management. one potential security problem. the lift goes from the underground public car park to the rooms so anyone can get there without being checked by security. most modern hotels with this type of access have a keycard system installed so that, without a room key, access to bedroom floors is denied.

I visited the in house restaurant and they had very little that a vegetarian could eat. So I did not order dinner and staff advised me that there were no restaurants in the neighborhood I would go to except Kentucky Fried Chicken :}. I remembered her that I was a vegetarian. So I ordered dessert and went to my room. I requested a non smoking room and I was placed in a smoking room that played havoc with my allergies. I called the front desk and my room was changed to a significantly smaller room than I was in before. This was ok I just need to rest for the night to catch a plane. I confirmed my airport pick up when I got to the hotel but when I went downstairs to go to the airport I was advised an error was made and pick up was not scheduled, a cab was called for me and I got to airport on time good thing the airport is only 5km away. This was the primary reason I selected this hotel its proximity to the airport.

Good full-service hotel in the city center
Clean room, efficient staffs. I just wrote my flight time and number when I made my reservation via Expedia, but the driver of free airport shuttle was there despite 90 minutes' flight delay though he showed up slowly and I started to call a taxi which was somehow cancelled before finalizing my taxi request.

I surprised by the soul of this hotel in the heart of South Africa, Bloemfontein. Hospitality and care made it into a small holiday break. Lovely staff. Its a nice old building, meaning spacious rooms, interior is well maintained to add to total comfort, large working space area and en suite bathrooms with complimentary luxury toiletries. I love the old stone tile floor which were kept intact, it oozed of old memories. Comfortable rooms, large working space area, luxury complimentary toiletries as well. Hotel is situated very conveniently and Bloem Plaza can be entered directly from the foyer/reception.

In Heart of South Africa
I surprised by the soul of this hotel in the heart of South Africa, Bloemfontein. Hospitality and care made it into a small holiday break. Its a lovely old building, meaning spacious rooms, interior is well maintained to add to total comfort. I love the old stone tile floor which were kept intact, it oozed of old memories. During load shed hours (which is quite common in South Africa's electricity supply network) the hotel kept going smooth. The food is really good. opted for buffet one evening and enjoyed each bit I tasted. Great breakfast buffet is also available and the traditional pap (maize porridge) was available each day during my stay. One can eat it sweet or savoury as the locals do. Comfortable rooms, large working space area, luxury complimentary toiletries as well. My team whom I also booked in here, were just as over the moon with this establishment and the food. Hotel is situated very conveniently and Bloem Plaza can be entered directly from the foyer/reception. The lane with street vendors selling local handmade arts & crafts is a must to visit. And if something is too far, the hotel has a complimentary shuttle service with knowledgeable staff to assist - pick guests up or drop them off even as far as the airport outside the city (BFN) Bram Fisher International Airport. If you are ready to travel, this hotel and its staff are more than ready to receive you.

Water temperature in the shower was warm and sometimes cold. The a/c did not work properly hence the room was always warm. The staff wouldnt open the phone line as i needed to pay for my room charges of which after an argument trying to clarify that it had already been paid. The level of hospitality of the front desk was dissapointing. Being a 1st time traveller in the city no information of the surrounding area could be provided even after asking, no one seemed to want to go the extra mile.

NOT BAD AT ALL
This hotel is right in the town centre which some people may not like but I do and did. It's VERY convenient for everything and it's fine to walk around there - with the usual city caveats. The rooms are comfortable, not posh (or mine wasn't). Bed comfy, TV working, lots of hot water. Breakfast was OK, though coffee could have been stronger and hotter. Staff are very friendly and very helpful. Only gripe: no daylight in the dining room!
