A bit of a mixed review. I could not contact the hotel via email or the Expedia app (quintabelasaotiago.com is not the domain name for the hotel email) prior to arrival. some of the front desk staff (Nadia) are excellent as is Sa in the restaurant but others are surly and disinterested. We asked to borrow an iron and were told at the front desk that we would have to pay - then it never turned up since the only way to get clothes ironed is to use the laundry service. We asked for a replacement knife at breakfast (to cut some cake and the other was covered in egg yoke) only to be told 'you've got one already!'. The room aircon did not work and there is a very quaint button to operate the lights - something from many decades in the past. The hotel is lovely, presented really well with fresh flowers. It's location is unbeatable with a wonderful view across the harbour. This makes up for the less than perfect staff. I'd go back for sure, it is quirky and the location and hotel fabric is great - old style Portuguese.

Beautiful evocative character hotel.
Such a beautiful, authentic hotel, in a lovely setting in the old town overlooking the sea. If you want slick and modern, the hotel district will suit you better, but if you enjoy character, gardens, spacious classic rooms and a real feel of the country you are visiting, I would completely recommend this hotel. My tiny note to the managers is that morning coffee needs an upgrade. We chose a room with a street and Mountain View, it was much bigger than expected and sitting on the sunny balcony every morning was a delight, followed by breakfast on the terrace looking at the lovely pool and sea. We enjoyed every minute of being here and will certainly return.

Hotel booking not honoured
I can only say terrible because having paid for private transfers to get to the hotel, we were greeted with “oh did you not get the message? You’ve been moved”. No explanation, just a shrug and assurance we were going to their much nicer sister hotel. The new hotel was very pleasant with lovely views, BUT not in the city - 2 miles from our chosen hotel, and up a very long steep incline . It was also up in a residential area which then required buses or taxis to get anywhere , as there were no bars/ restaurants or any other things nearby. And no shuttle . We tried complaining but have just been blanked. Had we been told of the move we’d have cancelled the booking; we did not want to be out of the city, as I’ve recently had knee ops and wanted to be close to things for our very short break on Madeira. Very disappointing

Don’t trust
It’s a fraud. Showed up to check in and was told I didn’t book there, but a sister property 3 miles up and out of town. Did not honor the reservation I had through hotels.com, I was left to deal with it on my own. 3 emails to this hotel and not one works. The manager is “ never in” it’s a scam

Parking sucked and there was not enough of it because the hotel kept using it for there vehicles! Told us to pay off site!!, David the front desk guy was rude and unhelpful our hold trip and with many problems which he did not fix a promised! Like the 120 in the bathroom which did not work so my electric toothbrush got fried in a room outlet which he did not care about! Breakfast was Awful, slow and we stopped eating after 2 days for our 10 day trip. Dishes sat in our room all week and never gave us more coffee for our room. We also went out and could not get back in their locked gate at night for more than 30 minutes!!! Hotel looks nice but management and staff are terrible!!!!!!!!!!

This is a great option for a stay in Funchal. A spectacular view from the terrace across the harbour. Staff extremely friendly and competent. The food is good (but not spectacular) at reasonable prices. It does not have children's facilities - possibly more suitable for adults. The rooms are clean and well maintained. Definitely worthy of consideration

Interesting area
This hotel is located in the old town, not in West Funchal where most hotels are. There were some surprising charges - for example, guests had to pay per day to use the in-room safe.

Our room was unavailable, on arrival - due to 'guest illness' rather than overbooking, according to reception (!) We were moved, for the night, to 'Sao Tiago's' sister hotel,'Quinta Das Vistas Palace Gardens' & were awarded a complementary dinner with wine. On free return to 'Sao Tiago', we discovered ourselves upgraded to a suite, at no extra cost; hotel solution to its problem very satisfactory to ourselves.

This is a lovely hotel, very close to the old town (just a few minutes to lots of restaurants and about ten minutes from the cable car station which is the pickup point for many tours). The room was spacious and clean and the breakfast was plentiful. We did not use the pool or gym areas. The only thing that was not provided was a kettle in the room. Hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. If we go back to Funchal we will book this hotel again.

This is an old Quinta which has been very tastefully extended and modernised. It has a very nice view across the bay. The rooms are a good size, clean and nicely furnished. The beds were a little hard for my liking. There is a choice of rooms either overlooking the outdoor pool and the bay or onto the street. We like our window open and Friday night was very noisy, the rest of the week was OK. A very well situated Quinta, five minutes walk downhill to a vast choice of restaurants. Nice breakfast which could be eaten in the dining room or on the terrace, both overlooking the bay. Very convenient for the chairlift to Monte and the sea front, market and a pick up point for Levada walks. Friendly, hard working, helpful staff.

Beautiful old world charm in the heart of the old
We love Madeira and we love this hotel. We stayed at the sister hotel Quinta das Vistas last year and were introduced to this hotel as a drop off point for going in to town, so when we decided to go back to Madeira this year it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try the Quinta Bela de Sao Tiago and we weren't disappointed in any way. Located in the heart of the Old Quarter, this hotel is within walking distance of everything that matters in Funchal. Old world charm with modern service typifies this beautiful Quinta. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, who couldn't be more friendly or more helpful. Little details like a library where you can find a wide variety of books in a wide variety of languages just adds to the charm of this hotel. Couldn't recommend it enough

Great position in Funchal
Away from the commercialised western end of Funchal and on the doorstep of the old town, has an enviable position (provided you don't mind the short but fairly steep walk). Hotel itself is either quaint or tired depending on your mindset, but in reality probably both. Rooms could do with a lick of paint but generally OK; good bed, good shower, good view (and sea view upgrade is a must in my opinion). Didn't eat in (it's surrounded by good and cheaper restaurants and bars) so can't comment on food other than breakfast which was good too. Gardens outstanding and pool area excellent (though pool itself not heated and can be cold). Would recommend, but be aware of what it is, and that's not a modern or five-star resort. Personally, would definitely visit again. I can't leave a review though without mentioning the ridiculous (and non-optional) electronic system which 'controls' (I use the word loosely) the lights. What's wrong with a light switch or two? Our hall light would come on randomly during the night and I confess that next day I just removed the bulb. (Suggest you do too if you stay, staff seem equally flummoxed by it all and just reassure without changing anything). It's a kind of 1980's 'Tomorrows World meets Fawlty Towers' concept; funny now but less so at 3am with your wife thinking we're being burgled....

Character, Old Town position and great sea views
We've stayed at the Bela San Tiago twice now, and it is a very good hotel. I'd rate it as a good 4 star. The best feature is the location. It's in the old part of town, close to dozens of bars and restaurants,, but it just far enough away so there is little to no noise. Funchal is really split in to 3 areas: the Old Town with narrow streets full of shops and restaurants, the town centre, with all the modern shopping and facilities and the harbour, and the modern tourist/hotel area where you get loads of big new hotels (often with great sea front positions) but very little Portuguese character. We like the Old Toewn the best, and the Bela is one of the very few hotels there. If you book a sea view room you get amazing views of the sea (obviously!) and the harbour, and the balconies face West usually, so you can enjoy the sunsets. The Bela is a converted and extended grand house, and they've kept the same style throughout the new parts. It has character and style, but is NOT faded and tatty - everything is well maintained. Breakfast is very nice. Choice of fresh fruits, variety of breads and cereals, fresh juices, fizzy wine, cold meats and cheeses, plus hot dishes (bacon, sausage, tomatoes, eggs etc)

Old school, comfortable, well-located.
7 night stay over New Year, booked at last minute so fairly pricey, but proved an excellent base for doing nothing, wandering around town or ( via bus depot & cable cars) expeditions further afield around the island. It's relatively small and has a nice feel to it, views from sea-facing rooms are great (much of the great sweep of Funchal bay is visible), breakfast buffet good & copious (no idea about dining in - too many restos elsewhere to explore), desk staff helpful with bookings &c. Appears to have a lot of repeat business and the (winter) demographic was mainly 40s/50s+ couples, a fair few of them disappearing daily with stout boots, maps etc. to explore the stunning island interior. The 'edge of town' location means there are lots of (as yet) undeveloped old houses, plots &c around and people actually live there, so it feels more 'real' than the modern hotel zone at the W end of the bay. No doubt this will change over time, but for now there's a pleasant mix of locals and visitors. e.g.: one local hipster-ish bar (Barreirinha Bar Café) does good burgers, live music and on one occasion a trance mix / light show! Likewise nearest resto (O Tasco) was excellent - no real menu, just a chalked-up list of the fish bought from the market that day - and cheaper than cookie-cutter eateries further in. Craft beers available by the bottle for those who crave it (guilty, your honour). Loved the walking on Madeira so I'll be back and would happily stay here again.

Wonderful location and hotel
Best hotel I've stayed in for a long time, hotel is clean and well cared for, staff can not do enough to help you, we were upgraded to a suite with beautiful views of the hills and sea with a large terrace. The pool area is quite big, looks out onto the garden- complete with parrots and fish, not once did we struggle to get a nice spot/lounger by the pool. In terms of location the hotel is just up a small hill from the old town Funchal, which we found to have the best restaurants and entertainment. It took us 15 minutes to walk to the harbour. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing stay, within walking distance of the main attractions of the island.

Very pleasent hotel 20 minutes from Funchal centre
We stayed for two weeks at the end of June. We enjoyed a relaxing holiday using the hot days to laze around by the pool, and the cooler days to visit the centre of Funchal. There are several museums to look around and Funchal has a wealth of small streets to explore and old buildings to look at. Took the cable car to Monte and looked around the botanical gardens (well worth it). Our hotel was in the Old Town, bustling with dozens of restaurants - we enjoyed a few evenings here - but we tended to go into the centre of Funchal to eat - the The Ritz became are favourite place. Some evenings (after we had eaten) we got a taxi to the Royal Savoy for the evening entertainment and a bit of dancing (jive, cha cha etc). On Saturday nights there were firework displays from the quayside and just about the whole of Funchal comes out to see them from the promenade.

Lovely hotel, fantastic location
Lovely hotel in perfect location very close to the waterfront, local restaurants and the old town. Hotel very clean ,breakfast was perfect with plenty of choice and well cooked and fresh everyday . Had a bedroom which overlooked the mountain- certain amount of road noise but didnt ruin our holiday - room was HUGE with a superking sized bed - was lovely - only negative is there was no tea/coffee making in the room and the description of the room i booked was misleading and incorrect so that should be addressed - i booked a room that said it was a double AND two singles- it wasnt it was one very large bed so was fine for us but may not have been for other people booking what they would have thought was a room with multiple beds. Staff friendly enough and helpful. Enjoyed our stay and because of the location we would stay there again.Overall very happy and would recommend

This hotel is ideally located in the Old Town area of Funchal with a huge selection of restaurants within easy walking distance. Also within walking distance are bus stops for buses to all parts of the Island as well as the cable car to Monte. We were so glad we did not pick a hotel in the "Hotel Zone" which is way away from central Funchal. Yet as it is in its own lovely grounds the hotel is completely free from the usual urban noise. The only sound we heard from our garden view room was birdsong. This might not be the case for the so called mountain view rooms which overlook a road, though not a very busy one. This hotel should be a top pick on location alone.
