. Another view of the hot air balloon launch over Lake Galena. I never get tired of watching hot air balloons. A late Fall male wood duck along the shoreline that was constantly in and out of the sunlight. These are some of the most colorful birds in North America but they can be very tough to photograph due to their skittish nature. It might have something to do with hunting season.......... The frozen falls of Lake Galena on the coldest night of the year. Temps reached 40 below with windchill on this night. It was so cold my fingers stuck to the tripod. I was dressed like an Eskimo but made the mistake of taking off my gloves. A great sunset on Lake Galena. It was brutally cold with nasty winds but the colors were magnificent. A beautiful Fall sunset on Lake Galena. A vertical shot of a hot air balloon drifting over Lake Galena. This is a magnificent sight on a calm Fall morning. This is a must do activity for anyone who visits the area. The best time to go is in Fall when the colors are changing. A great sunset on an early Winter day got interesting very quickly when a flock of geese came through. The colors on this night were beautiful. One of my favorite bluejay shots. Although common these birds are very beautiful, loud and aggresive. The Fall mating call is so sweet and soft compared to the usual cry. Although the background is busy I love this shot that shows a roosting turkey with a curious gray squirrel looking up at the large intruder. I find situations like this very interesting. When I spotted the squirrel heading up the tree I just prayed that it would see the turkey so I could capture the reaction. the squirrel just stood there barking at the turkey for a few minutes until it finally retreated. It was too bad the balloon was not lit up in this shot. The birds are turkey vultures that roost in the tree tops and take flight when the hot air balloon launches. What a sight to see on a calm morning. An Eastern Bluebird getting ready to take off. These birds become even more colorful in the Spring during mating season. A bluejay perched on a snow covered log with sunlight shining on its head. A possum shows its fierce side while protecting its home. I quickly retreated and let it know I was not a threat. On a calm overcast morning with insanely high humidity I watched a beautiful balloon launch out over the lake. If you ever go to Galena you have to try out Galena on the Fly which is a hot air balloon company owned by Andy and Cait Williams. What a great way to see Gods Country. A beautiful sunset on Lake Galena. For 2 years I would watch the clouds at dusk and if it looked like a good sunset I was at the Lakes edge with my camera. This was an early November day with balmy temperatures and no wind which created the reflection. A barred owl on the ground which is not where you normally see them. These are huge birds that are utterly silent in flight. If you ever have the good fortune to see one flying at close range it is amazing how quiet they are. A mink stands guard outside of its den. I watched it go into the den and waited for it to pop its head out to capture a few images. This quickly became my go to location for wild mink and it allowed me to get some great shots. A perfect morning sunrise flight for An early Fall hot air balloon launch on Lake Galena. the wind changed direction at the last minute so I was in the wrong spot. Predicting wind direction is never an exact science. Flipping a juniper berry in its mouth. These are handsome birds. The mature birds have a small band of red feathers that have a wax like look which is where the bird gets its name. One of my favorite barred owl pictures taken just after sunrise within 75 yards of the nest. The owl was chasing a squirrel and landed on the stump to look for its quarry. I was waiting and ready when it noticed me. It sat on the stump for a good 5 minutes allowing me to get some wonderful images. A turkey perched in a tree during a snowstorm. I wish the light had been better but you take what you can get. When you see these birds perched in a tree it is an odd sight due to the enormous size and wingspan. Another Lake Galena sunset with a flock of geese on the horizon. A great sunset is a 45 minute experience that captivates the senses. I never get tired of watching them. A large chipmunk stands guard outside his den in a rotted tree stump. A mink fishing along the banks of Lake Galena. A flock of cave swallows that were picking off bugs on the surface of lake galena. It was a foggy morning with the sun coming up and the cave swallows started feeding creating small ripples in the water. A flock of geese drift across Lake Galena on a beautiful morning. I was waiting for the launch of the hot air balloon when I took this shot. A turkey roosting in a tree which is common at night or when the snow is deep which is the case here. Watching them take off and maneuver through the trees can be comical. A barred owl which is the master of camoflage. This nest hole has been used for several years by the same pair of birds which I found one day while photographing turkeys. If you keep your distance and do not disturb them you will have unlimited opportunities as long as they live as they will keep using the same nest hole to rear their young. This nest is located right next to a creek which is where the adults hunt every morning and evening. I never get tired of watching them. A green heron waits patiently for a fish to swim by before pouncing. While watching this I had the impression the bird was fascinated by its own reflection. The 8th hole on the North Course at Eagle Ridge. I took this on a clear moonless night
when the stars were blazing. I used a small flashlight to highlight the flag. Perched on a tree branch waiting for a bug to pass by. An Eastern Bluebird eating a juniper berry. A family of cave swallows building nests along a rock cliff. These are fascinating little birds that never stop working. Attempting to take juniper berries from a tree. Thankfully I had enough sunlight to boost my shutter speed. A handsome fox sparrow which is one of the first sparrow migrants to return in the Spring. These are large sparrows with a heavily streaked breast. A bathing beauty. If you have the shutter speed to handle it the shots of bathing birds are often some of the best. On certain cold winter days the bluebirds and waxwings will converge on certain juniper trees to feed on the small berries. On my days off I would drive around looking for the tree that appealed to the birds. I drifted up on this scene in a boat on Lake Galena. If you look closely you can see the wildflowers and wild raspberries growing on the bank with a beautiful reflection in the Lake. I kept on hoping that something like a turtle would climb up on the log completing the scene. A ball of fluffy feathers getting ready to eat a juniper berry. I remember this day was extremely cold but you would never know it from looking at the picture.
