Culture and Local Attractions

Galveston is home to more than 60 places of national and historical significance, so if you're a history buff or interested in culture and the arts, you'll want to reserve a few days to explore the downtown historical area. Some of the most popular cultural facilities include the Romanesque Grand 1894 Opera House, which puts on a variety of theatrical and operatic performances throughout the year. Learn about African-American history at the Ashton Villa. This site was where the first Juneteenth celebration took place. Another area to visit is the Silk Stocking National Historic District where you can check out the contributions Galveston made to the allies' efforts during World War II. After all that time on your feet, you'll want to rest a little; make a stop at Strand National Historic Landmark District and sip a cup of coffee, do a jigsaw puzzle, or play a game of chess on the outdoor seating areas.
