Nice hotel, fantastic location, friendly staff

Posted Oct 20, 2017
Pros: Spectacular views; great location near many wonderful sites and near the market; friendly and courteous staff; great food!!!!
Location: Great location at foot of Gellert Hill, at end of bridge to the market. Within walking distance of monuments, park, market, shops, etc.
The hotel is beautiful. The views from the balcony of my room were fantastic: Gellert Hill, the Danube, the bridge!!! Hotel staff were very friendly, pleasant, and helpful.

Aging grandeur near to city centre

Posted Oct 19, 2017
Pros: The famous spa was well worth a visit
Cons: Room decor quite tired, needs freshening up now.
Location: Location was excellent, city centre in walking distance. Also very close to public transport serves, and the metro, tram and buses were easy to use.
The hotel is grand though a little shabby. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room though basic was clean and sufficient to my needs. I was located very near to metro, tram and bus stops and could walk to many central locations. Thoroughly enjoyed the free visit to the pool/spa complex. I would come back to this hotel, it served my needs on a d value deal.

All about the spa

Posted Oct 17, 2017
Pros: Spa and restaurants
Cons: Spa tiles could be cleaner
Location: Right on the Danube a bridge away from the central market
This is an older but wonderful massive hotel. I had a newly renovated double room for a great price. The functional furniture could have been a bit more elegant but everything worked. The spa is great, especially for swimmers. The indoor pool is among the most beautiful I have seen. The large thermal baths were excellent as well. Self-parking was nearby and inexpensive. Panorama restaurant was excellent as was the pub. Terrific breakfast buffet. The staff aims to please.

Pros: Great pottential Beautiful original building
Cons: Total redo of rooms. Nicer staff. I felt like they were doing we a favor whenever asked a question or even in serviice. T00 serious all the time.
Location: Location is fine.
We sayed at the hotel 12 years ago and had a wonderful experience. This time the room needed a total overhaul. Has great potrential We just returned and I see a charge that is questionable and will hve to deal with that today. You need to know if they have overcharged us, which I think they did. Fantastically wonderful experience!

Posted Oct 13, 2017
Pros: Great food, mineral baths, LOVELY personnel, The Beautiful Danube in front of our window, super-convenient transportation by hotel.
Cons: The hotel does need renovation and borders on the shabby in some ways. You need to know that before you go.
Location: Mass transportation in Budapest is extremely easy to use, and available beside the hotel. The staff will help you find your way.
The Gellert has several uniquely wonderful aspects. The hot spring baths are sumptuously beautiful, and part of the hotel, so after a long day visiting that LOVELY city, you just put on your swimsuit, throw on the hotel robe, and stroll down the hall to soak in pools as hot as you want (there are bunch of available temperatures!). This is a classical old turn-of-the-century European hotel, and the art tiling of the baths are famous throughout the world. The food is terrific, and the personnel are extremely nice and helpful. It could not be more convenient to transportation, and is right on the river by the most beautiful of the art nouveau bridges. We spent 11 days there and loved every day.

Close to centre of town on the River Danube

Posted Oct 4, 2017
Pros: Position, thermal baths old world atmosphere.
Cons: The shabby chic is part of the charm of the hotel but some parts need refurbishment.
Location: Very central, lovely long walks by the river and up to Gelert Hill for views over the city. Excellent restaurants are popping up all over the city.
Another excellent stay in this wonderful old hotel. Lots of character and charm. Staff are friendly and helpful. Our room overlooked the river and was roomy and well furnished. Breakfast was vast and generous although it could get busy at peak times.

Dear Martin, Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us and with the Expedia community and thanks for praising our location and the „old world atmosphere”. We do appreciate your kind comments on the „friendly and helpful staff” and on the „vast and generous breakfast”. As our Hotel GELLERT is one of the oldest „not rebuilt” hotels in Budapest, it is a unique and ultimate opportunity to come and stay here to enjoy this „vintage” old charming ambience and old elegant atmosphere. Good news: we have recently finished refurbishing EIGHTY bedrooms, / new wallpapers, new furniture, new carpets and curtains / and are about to start refurbishing another 25 in the very near future. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome and host you again soon! Sincerely yours, Mihaly Vasony Guest Relations Manager

A grand hotel of faded glory. Nasty check in guy.

Posted Sep 26, 2017
Pros: Breakfast was very good. The tile-work of the baths is lovely (although no longer part of the hotel, you get a 1 visit pass). Liked bath experience.
We were guaranteed a courtyard view and were given a room overlooking a roof and a wall, in a far off corridor where all the other rooms were under re-construction - in the drywall stage! Second room was better but still no courtyard. It really soured the stay.

Sorry about the reconstruction of some rooms near to yours , but this was a must for the Gellert, to have some rooms refurbished… Best regards, Mihaly Vasony Guest Relations Manager

Poor quality hotel room

Posted Sep 25, 2017
First of all: the swimming pool and the spa facilities is not included as it is run by a separate company. Also, the hotel bedroom is one of the worst I've been in for a while: water leakage, poor quality bed, and overall dissapointing. However, the service is fantastic, location is very good, the building looks amazing, and the spa is top notch quality.

Dear Guest, First of all we would like to express our appreciation for your feedback and kind words regarding our location the „amazing building” and the „fantastic service” offered by our staff. We read with regret that the maintenance of the hotel did not really exceed all your expectations, and feel deeply sorry that you felt some areas/rooms were poorly maintained. Danubius Hotel Gellert is one of the oldest hotels in Budapest - will be one hundred years old next year - offering real retro style rooms with mostly the original furnishings. Good news: we have recently finished refurbishing EIGHTY bedrooms, / new wallpapers, new furniture, new carpets and curtains / and are about to start refurbishing another 25 in the very near future. A Faded Potential Gem In Need Of A Makeover

Posted Sep 24, 2017
Pros: Location, wifi through out, complimentary spa visit, very obliging staff, atmosphere it's not a bland faceless hotel
Cons: Just needs to be sensitivily updated without loosing its old world charm.
Location: Spa, Gellerty Hill, Liberty Bridge, Market Hall too much to mention
The hotel is very centrally located opposite the metro and tram a short walk over the bridge into the city centre. My room was adequate for my needs very basic in need of a makeover. The room was scrupulously clean. The whole place needs money spent on it. Breakfast was great with hot and cold selections. The complimentary visit to the spa is a must. Considering the hotel is not expensive you get a lot for your money, so I feel mean criticising. All the staff I came into contact with were professional, courteous and friendly. I would recommend anyone to stay here and would stay here again if I were to visit Budapest again.

Dear Mitchell, Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us and with the Expedia community. First of all we would like to express our appreciation for your feedback and kind words regarding our location the „great „ breakfast with hot and cold selections” and the „professional and courteous staff”. Many thanks for recommending our property and for writing „would stay here again”. On „the whole place needs money spent”. As our hotel is one of the oldest „not rebuilt” hotels in Budapest, it is a unique and ultimate chance to come and stay here to enjoy this „vintage” charming ambience and old atmosphere of the Gellert. The owners and the management are planning a major renovation of our unique property which includes all the guest rooms and the entire hotel. Thank you for your understanding and patience because at present we do not have information when this renovation will start. Sincerely, Mihaly Vasony Guest Relations Manager
