The Holly Tree Hotel

Kentallen Pier, Appin PA38 4BY - Map
"A real Highland surprise"
Although some miles from major centres, the Holly Tree makes up for this by having an excellent restaurant - Seafood mainly but enough choice to suit others - and caring, friendly, staff. Our stay at the Holly Tree has been the highlight of our holiday and we (reluctantly) recommend it to anyone travelling in the Oban/Glencoe/Fort William area. (We're only reluctant because it was hard enough to get in there and we've probably made it even harder to get a room now by recommending it!). The rooms, restaurant and bar all face out over Loch Linnhe and present beautiful and ever-changing views as the light moves through the day and evening.

"Very relaxing hotel"
Very nice hotel on the loch side. Wasn't aware that I needed the ferry when I booked but it added to the family experience.

"Great view and location "
We had a beautiful view of the river from our room. Building is beautiful. Rooms were just a little tired but clean. Lots of nice sitting areas on the main floor. Super handy to the rail system and downtown area. Cannot get wifi in the rooms without paying was the downside, but was free in the common areas.

"Awesome views of the Scottish Highlands"
Great hotel situated on a peninsula surrounded by the Loch and the mist covered mountains. If I'd known about this gem before, I would have planned to stay longer. Definitely coming back.

"Great place to stay in the heart of the highlands"
Overall great experience at the Ballachulish Hotel. Peaceful area around, breathtaking Scottish landscapes whichever direction you look in, super helpful and communicative staff, especially, at the bar. I was lucky to have a few conversations with the bartender from Glasgow who shared with me plenty exiting stories about Glencoe and Scotland in general. The building itself resembles an old baronial mansion (or even a castle) so you really get to feel yourself a Scottish aristocrat staying here. The location is fine unless you came here on Sunday when there are literally two buses a day running on this route. Given the shortage of buses it may be challenging to get from the hotel elsewhere without a car (or at least a bike that you can hire in either Ballachulish or Glencoe village. I also heard that there is another bike/segway rentals within short walk from the hotel ). The rest of the week the bus frequency is way better so it should be quite easy to explore the area nearby. Bottom line - a great place to stay, true Scottish experience and a reasonable choice price/quality wise. A bit remote from Glencoe villages and main sights e.g. Glencoe Three Sisters but that shouldn't be much of an issue.

"Good for Fort William and Ben Nevis"
This hotel was one of the few in Fort William (through Expedia) to have a vacancy for the time we wanted to be there, and I feel it was very expensive for a two star hotel. We were in the section away from the main hotel; this is being refurbished and it needs it, although our rooms were clean, well equipped, and had everything we needed. Breakfast was very good with a wide variety of hot and cold items on the buffet bar. The hotel is a good 20 minute walk away from Fort William, but caters for walkers and hill climbers, so they would not be concerned at that.
