Charming old hotel in good location

4 out of 5

Pros: The staff, the setting, a nice atmosphere.
Cons: The bedroom furnishings. The toiletries and towelling.
Location: Near the promenade, marina and Doramos Park. Nestor Museum on the doorstep. 25 minute walk, or 4 euro taxi ride to the Vegueta or Las Canteras Beach
The Santa Catalina is a grand old hotel that has seen somewhat better days. It is in a lovely garden setting, half way between the old town and the main beach. You can walk to either, or take a cheap taxi or even cheaper bus. The reception area, breakfast and dining rooms are very nice, but the main bar is a bit exposed to the weather. Our "superior double room" was rather shabbily furnished and the mattress on the king size bed was very hard. There was only one easy chair in the room. The separate bathroom was a good size and the shower was fine. Toiletries were low quality, but plentiful. The towelling robes were rather frayed. The old style hairdryer got almost too hot to handle. Strangely, we could hear water draining from other rooms at times during the night. The large balcony had a small wooden table and two chairs (no cushions), all in need of re-varnishing. On the two occasions it rained, the balcony flooded and took a long time to dry up. We didn't use the pool or spa. Breakfasts were very good with a plentiful array of hot and cold food. We ate in the terrace dining room on our first night. The food was very good but pricey. The hotel staff were very helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble. There was a large flood light on our balcony which rather spoilt the atmosphere in the evenings and, when we asked if it could be switched off, a technician was sent to take the bub out! Everything was done with a smile and we felt like valued guests.

Fantastic Stay at Santa Carolina

5 out of 5

Pros: Great location in its own extensive gardens adjacent to a very picturesque park - ideal for just relaxing and enjoying the views (and the parakeets!).
Cons: Nothing significant, although perhaps the hotel could give more prominence to local events, like the performances in the Pueblo Canario.
Location: Both the regular buses and the hop on - hop off bus stop directly in front of the hotel and give easy access to the beach area and the old town.
My wife and I stayed at the Santa Carolina for a week recently and it exceeded our expectations - it has received mixed reviews but we found no negatves at all; in particular our room was great with excellent views and the staff were very efficient and helpfull. We only had 1 evening meal in the hotel - I would rate it as fairly standard superior hotel fare (and more expensive than the nearby restaurants) but fine for a 1-off experience. The buffet breakfast was very good with lots of choice - particularly popular was the freshly squeezed orange juice dispensed from a machine which was constantly topped up with oranges. Also the breakfast operation was very efficiently organised, with a member of staff on hand to find you a seat - our experience in similar hotels was that this meal could be a bit of a scrum! There was a performance of traditional folk music and dancing in the nearby Pueblo Canario on Sunday (not sure how regular this is) and the adjacent Museo Nestor is a must for art-lovers.

This lovely hotel needs renovations in every corner. Up to down....the owner doesn't invest money in the building...not in the rooms and not in the public areas...it is like almost 3 maybe 4 star hotel... bathrooms smells very bad...breakfast is good . We have seen 5-6 rooms, all of them in bad condition..

Pros: Location and staff.
Cons: Food for veggies.
Hotel is located halfway between the cathedral quarter and the main beachfront, about 30 minutes walk either way. We found this perfect, and cabs were cheap and plentiful. Nestor museum next door was a delight.

A smallish dark room

Hotel was beautiful, pool, lounges, dining room etc were all de luxe but our room was a smaller version of what was on the website and quite dark. Our room looked straight across at the room opposite. Nothing special at all also the TV reception was poor and they couldn't fix it. We mentioned these failings when we asked for a late checkout but they still charged us.

Splendid hotel

The hotel is about 20 minutes from the airport (about 28 euros for taxi). As we pulled up to the hotel it quite took my breath away as the the frontage and reception was decorated beautifully for Christmas time with lights and trees. Our room was comfortable and very clean -!but quite old fashioned (but in a nice way) We had a few good days of sunshine and we lounged by the pool which was in a lovely setting with a great bar (but the outdoor pool was way too cold for me to swim in at that time of year!) There was also a spa and gym which you had to pay extra to use. Good gym facilities and the pool was lovely - the few times i went there i pretty much had the place to myself I didnt realise that a new years eve gala was included in our package until reception rang me to collect our tickets. The party was amazing - a five course meal and free drinks all night. But what really made it outstanding was the quality of the waiters/service. They were outstanding. There were some fabulous restaurants across the road on the marina front about 5 mins walk from the hotel. We also walked to the old town and to the new town both with excellent shopping and restaurants. Its about a 30 minute walk or 5 euros by taxi. (There was always a line of taxis waiting outside the hotel to whisk you away to your chosen destination and all very reasonable) All in all we had a splendid and thoroughly relaxing time here and I really hope I get the chance to return
