The experience did not align with our expectations

Posted Aug 26, 2015
Pros: The resort grounds are lovely, unexpectedly filled with wildlife (howler monkeys, coatis, parrots, iguanas), and well maintained.
Cons: The service, food, and reservation system. Some how our last night dinner reservation was deleted :(
Location: Playa conchol is a lovely beach created from weathered sea shells (conchol). We surfed, snorkeled and paddle boarded within a 30 min. radius.
I have rated the Westin as disappointing (1 out of 5) because my experience did not align with my expectations given the price and brand. When travelling to Costa Rica, my wife and I typically don't expect to stay in resorts that have perfected the customer experience like those found in the US, Mexico, and other tourist destinations. However, some resorts of Guanacaste province are attempting to claim this stature. Luckily our stay would only be for part of our trip through Costa Rica. Our experience: We arrived to the Westin in the early evening. We were surprised to find out they did not have available the suite we had reserved with a King bed. So we were TOLD we would be put into a room with double beds. At my first polite objection to the situation, the front desk clerk acted like it was no big deal and sort of blew me off. I then reiterated my disappointment and was told without appology that maybe the following day we could be moved to another room if one becomes available. The next day I had to initiate a room change. The room change was hassle because we basically didn't have a room from 10:00am until after 3:00pm at check-in. Be aware on your first day of arrival, you will be limited to room service (cafeteria quality, i.e. crunchy rice) for dinner. All dinner places are reservation required and they fill up fast, even though they are not packed at dinner time. The restaurant service is TERRIBLE. We often placed orders that were forgotten and much worse

Dear D., Thanks for your feedback. It's good to hear that you enjoyed the wildlife and beautiful nature of our resort, yet, we regret to hear about your experience during your check in and with Food and Beverages quality and service. We're always working to give our guests a memorable experience and we regret to hear that we did not achieve this with you. Appreciate your constructive comments and we offer you an apologize for these inconveniences that, as you may see in other reviews, are not usual in our resort. The next time you visit Costa Rica, hope you give us the opportunity to be at your service again and offer you a renewal experience. Best regards.

Beautiful resort with beach access.

Posted Aug 22, 2015
Pros: The beds were super comfy.
Cons: A little more clarity in English writing about the restaurants on a card in the room would have been nice.
Location: The location was nice for us. We weren't planning on traveling anymore once we got there.
The resort had tons of lizards, monkeys and other animals that looked like a mix between a racoon and an ant eater. It was so cool to walk around the resort and see the animals. They had free snorkeling which was our favorite. There were several restaurants on the resort but we ended up eating the buffet every night. I like my food plain jane. ;) Everyone that we met did say the food was amazing in all the restaurants. We also did one of the adventures....the extreme zip lining. Talk about a rush. The tarzan swing was so much fun. We didn't bring our kids but this was definitely a kid friendly resort.

Nicely kept hotel near the beach

Posted Aug 18, 2015
The hotel was great. Felt like a little village. The room was better than what I expected. It was clean, comfortable and quiet at night. Could use some drawers to store clothing though just hangers were provided. The grounds are nice. You can enjoy wildlife right on the property like monkeys, birds, and other. The beach was beautiful and clean. The water was calm, great if you can't swim well. Got a massage on the beach for $20 which wasn't bad. The restaurants we tried were all good just tricky to get reservations. They fill up quickly. The staff was super friendly and their English was fantastic. We rented a car to get around since transportation is costly and things are far. The entertainment was okay not too spectacular but decent. The two brothers who sing known as chillax are great. Be prepared to leave early for the tours as the hikes take a long time and getting there is time consuming too. If you like to zip line this is the place for you...lots of options. I prefer the beach. We did go to the hot springs at Rincon de la vieja which was the closest for this and the falls called oropendola which were very nice. Overall a great place to relax and enjoy nature. I felt safe there even walking on my own at night.

Pros: Despite is All Included hotel, the dinners at the different restaurants are like a good a la carta ones. Staff is really good, good is really good!
Wonderful hotel, vies, gardens, pools, beach and sports facilities. Everyone is kind and professional. We went there on our honeymoon and came back with the kids. Is perfect for couples and families!

Cons: Send an expat as GM
Staff is not trained (sometimes insupportable) and underpaid (no motivation at all). I can't recommend this hotel.

HUGE Hotel, but a true Westin Experience

Posted Aug 10, 2015
Pros: It was clean and high class. The staff bent over backwards to make sure your stay is perfect. The spa and the pool made the trip.
Cons: The only real AC is in your room. Free wi-fi is only in the lobby. The place is so big you have to call for transportation to go anywhere.
Location: You're in the middle of nowhere. If you book an excursion it takes the whole day. Plan to sit around by the pool all day or take tours.
The car ride was about an hour and fine. Check-in was seamless. The food was healthy and not your typical greasy all inclusive menu. The dinner reservations book up quickly, but the food is outstanding. That being said- there's no junk food anywhere, so don't even think about blowing your diet on midnight pizza. The pool is enormous and the kids can go crazy without bothering you. The rooms are clean and luxurious, albeit English tv is hit or miss. The dance club is awful unless you're a 23 year old college boy, but it's the only bar available after 10pm. You have to either order room service beer or bring alcohol back to the room from that one bar. The beach has a good view, but the water is not your typical clear Caribbean. No white sand and you can only go in about waist deep due to currents. The spa was phenomenal and a true premium experience. My wife and I went for a romantic trip without our toddler, but it's not exactly a sexy atmosphere. A few large weddings took over the place, so we felt like we were at someone else's event. The resort is family focused including the restaurants late in the evening. Little Jimmy is going to scream through your meal even if you book at 8:30pm and the entertainment is for the teeny boppers. Overall, if you get a good deal book it. A good Westin high class experience, just not quite what we were looking for our age group. (32/35) I think we'll stick to Mexico. Don't forget to bring money for the departure tax!

Best beaches and friendly staff.

Posted Jul 29, 2015
Pros: Almost everything
Cons: Sofa bed comfort for sure!
Location: Great beaches, and nature surrounding resort. The was kayaking, swimming, fabulous pool area, swim up bar, atv rides, fishing excursion/pay, hiking.
Friendly, accommodating staff. Beautiful beach! The food was amazing without one bad meal out of our 7 day stay. Shuttle service was prompt and ran 24 hours a day. Room was very clean and what we expected, however the sofa bed could have been little more comfortable! Bars were great with great tenders, fix you anything you wanted and always serving with a smile. room service offered a large variety of foods, unlike other resorts, where your choices are limit to only few items. The grounds were full of flowers and well kept. Nature at its finest is what you will experience at the Westin! Lots of inclusive activities to enjoy and pay for excursions offered. This was the best vacation we've had in many years. Can't wait to return next summer! Would recommend Expedia and The Westin to everyone that wanted a family friendly all inclusive experience full of nature and fun! Don't forget animals and monkeys on the property as well, but we're not a nuisance at all, and never bothered anyone. Just a fabulous place to visit!

Best Resort experienced of my life

Posted Jul 26, 2015
Amazing. My first review every. But people should know. When we arrived we were greated by name and treated like royalty. We meet the most amazing people who did their best to make our Honeymoon amazing. From Oliver waiting to be the first to greet us by name, to Dixon our Driver, to Joselinne our amazing hostess, to Danny smiling our server. These people transformed our stay to the best experience ever. The customer service made the difference. Not to mention the 5star grounds. The food was Top Notch, OMG every restaurant, drinks were forever flowing and wildlife around every turn. Free kayaking snorkeling bike riding scuba lessons sushi making and so much more. Our room was great, the AC worked perfectly, we needed it. There were locals looking for tourist going to the best but who cares. Just say "No thank you" and move on if you don't want cheaper services than the hotel haha. I want to go back now. I just have to work for a long time. That's the only down side the price but it was worth the money to me!!! I hope all the great people we met will be there the next time we go back maybe 3/4 years.
