What a beautiful refurbished Colonial Guest House – welcoming and accommodating hosts and staff, delicious freshly prepared breakfast daily, and careful attention to detail.
Our plane arrived very late – about 1:00 am, and host Raul was there to meet and drive us the short 20 minutes to Casa Carmel. The next morning, his wife Sophie was present to “meet and greet,” answer questions, and assist with our plans. On-staff cook Rosie prepared breakfast daily. The beautiful house has always been in Sophie’s family, going back many generations, and has spectacular hand-carved wooden ceilings, doors, and trims. The antique furniture is comfortable, and the picturesque walled patio with its lush garden is cool and welcoming, offering a private retreat. Along with the comfort of the bed and breezes, another really positive feature of this BnB is its close proximity (3 ½ short, walking blocks) to 6th Avenue with its shops, restaurants, park, historic buildings, and huge subterranean Central Mercado where one can purchase classic Guatemalan woven textiles, leather goods, and ceramics, fruits and vegetables. The Mercado’s huge “food court” offers remarkably tasty local dishes . This simple fare proved to be surprisingly varied and delicious, and the people were incredibly helpful, friendly, and honest. When we return to Guatemala, we will definitely stay again in this unique and welcoming home. Sincere thanks – Mary and Peter
