Tranquil spot in a bustling neighborhood
Hotel is on a busy street with no parking in front, so loading and unloading luggage is a challenge. Once inside, it’s extremely comfortable and spacious. A salon and garden to relax in. Casa Carmel is located quite close to the Historic Center, and is only about 2 blocks from the pedestrian mall with restaurants and shops. My only disappointment is that they do not have parking as advertised. I was instructed to park around the corner (during busy rush hour). Aside from this mix up, the room and breakfast was pleasant and comfortable

My stay was exceptional. I thoroughly recommend this beautiful, comfortable, well maintained, stylish house. Communication for the airport pickup by my host was so easy and she was there waiting, driving me past locations to familiarise myself and giving great advice on the drive. The house is a beautiful ex spanish colonial place. So well maintained and kept, it just feels like a mansion but so comfy and welcoming. The two house assistants looked after me like I was family, ordering me Ubers, arranging breakfast times and choice (I recommend the omelette as they were wonderful, as was all other options). Advice on where to go, shopping stores etc was so helpful. Sophie the host arranged a great coach ride into Antigua for me from Westin Camino Real. The room was spacious, beautifully decorated in that dark wood, highly carved ex-colonial style, clean, comfy bed, great shower and wifi. All was so good. It was a hot week and although I knew the room didn't have air con, they lent me a fan and that was more than enough to keep cool in eve. Lovely garden and I adored relaxing in the comfy sofas in the stylish lounge. Walked to centre from here in 20 mins, stores nearby, Transmetro bus round the corner and lots of eateries nearby. I would stay again in a heartbeat as everyone went the extra mile to look after me - that kind of personal service is not found in big hotels but here it is the norm!

We really enjoyed our two night stay at this lovely home. The spacious room was very comfortable and the breakfast was great. We really appreciated the airport pickup by Raul. Both Raul & Sophie were very welcoming and helpful. We found it an easy walk to the restaurants and shops on the pedestrian street, 6a Avenida. Also, it was walking distance to the historical Central Park and large market,

Sophie and Raul were excellent hosts from the moment we were picked up from the airport. Casa Carmel is located near the center of historical Guatemala City. We were able to walk to the square, market and wonderful restaurants. Be sure to eat at Senora Pu, an excellent recommendation by Sophie. Beautifully decorated with its historical charm. The beds were very comfortable. We looked forward to our delicious coffee and breakfast from Rosa. Thank you Sophie and Raul for making our first stay in Guatemala City such a memorable one!

What a beautiful refurbished Colonial Guest House – welcoming and accommodating hosts and staff, delicious freshly prepared breakfast daily, and careful attention to detail. Our plane arrived very late – about 1:00 am, and host Raul was there to meet and drive us the short 20 minutes to Casa Carmel. The next morning, his wife Sophie was present to “meet and greet,” answer questions, and assist with our plans. On-staff cook Rosie prepared breakfast daily. The beautiful house has always been in Sophie’s family, going back many generations, and has spectacular hand-carved wooden ceilings, doors, and trims. The antique furniture is comfortable, and the picturesque walled patio with its lush garden is cool and welcoming, offering a private retreat. Along with the comfort of the bed and breezes, another really positive feature of this BnB is its close proximity (3 ½ short, walking blocks) to 6th Avenue with its shops, restaurants, park, historic buildings, and huge subterranean Central Mercado where one can purchase classic Guatemalan woven textiles, leather goods, and ceramics, fruits and vegetables. The Mercado’s huge “food court” offers remarkably tasty local dishes . This simple fare proved to be surprisingly varied and delicious, and the people were incredibly helpful, friendly, and honest. When we return to Guatemala, we will definitely stay again in this unique and welcoming home. Sincere thanks – Mary and Peter

Casa Carmel more than met our expectations! We were met at the airport (late night arrival), given an informal introduction to the neighborhood as we traveled to the hotel, enjoyed a clean comfortable room and bathroom, and had a FANTASTIC breakfast in in the morning. The location makes it easy to take a walking tour to the Central Plaza, cathedral and other historical sites. The owners,Sophie and Raul, were terrific in extending a warm Guatemala welcome and Rosie is an excellent cook. In our entire week's stay in Guatemala visiting many places, we never had a better breakfast!!!

great spot in Guatemala City
Great spot in Guatemala City. Lovely hotel, historic with period features. Only a few blocks walk to 6th Avenue pedestrian area, where you can find restaurants, shops and bars. you are in the centre, so it will be a busy spot, but the hotel is an oasis. The owner is amazing host and will ensure you have everything you need. Note that all rooms are on the second floor so you will need to climb stairs to get to the rooms.

Guatemala of the '30's.
Wanted a convenient location close to the airport because of a long travel day and late evening arrival. Requested a transfer - and there he was as soon as we got out of Customs and Immigration. The property is a lovely old home, now converted to a B & B. Very comfortable room, furnished in the style of Guatemala in the '30's, very pretty garden and sitting area. No complaints, we were the only people staying there, so it was a bit quiet, but we were not looking for excitement! Nice breakfast the following morning (included in the price of the accommodations), and we left for further adventures shortly after breakfast. It is relatively close to the central market, I believe, but we did not have time to check that out. All in all, a very comfortable, charming place to stay. Very clean, good, comfortable beds, warm and hospitable. I would definitely recommend it, particularly for a late arrival or an early departure. Guate

Wow!! What an incredible stay! Sophie was a phenomenal host and waited up after hours for us when our flight was delayed. She gave us a friendly greeting when we arrived and we could not believe how gorgeous this place was! It is a HUGE historical mansion with a beautiful courtyard. Rosa prepared us a great breakfast early the next morning and we were treated like royalty. We cannot wait to go back again!!

Nice B&B in Zone 1
This area, zone 1 is not for the inexperienced traveler. Know some Espanol and be ready to be able to have a little conversation. The people in Guatemala are very open, helpful and courteous. Going down 6th is a fun thing to do. Plenty of protection. Better if you get home before dark, dark, and this B&B is a good place pretty well located to many historic places in the City.

Left out on the street
I reserved on a saturday and showed up at the door on sunday about 2:30 pm. I rang the bell several times but no one came. I then pounded on the metal door and then the window. Still no one. Finally after half an hour and trying many times I gave up and wandered down to the nearby park where I called Expedia. They called the hotel but no one answered. Expedia said they would find me another hotel, but my phone was running out of power so I gave up, found a cab who took me to a hotel out by the airport. I am just glad I did not show up at Carmel after dark.

Very nice B&B
We spent one night at this B&B. Even tho, from the outside the place didn't seem like much, once we stepped inside everything changed. Dona Rosa was there to welcome us and she was there to help us in any way we needed. We stayed in a beautiful room with nice comfortable beds. The whole house is decorated in very good taste. Breakfast the next morning was really good. And we got to meet the owner of the B&B, a very nice and friendly lady. We absolutely recommend this place.

Beautiful mansion, lovely family/staff, superb!
If you want to start experiencing the authentic Guatemala right away, start at Casa Carmel, a beautiful, spacious, immaculate, gracious mansion with wonderful people. This family environment offers a rich slice of Guatemalan history and life. Proprietor Sophie went out of her way to assist us upon arrival with items including purchasing our cell phone and helping with Linea Dorada bus tickets to Flores, both vital for us whose Spanish facility was not as good as it should have been (her English is native). We enjoyed being in Zona 1, which admittedly is gritty but has a proud baroque past and plenty of character that is worth experiencing. Casa Carmel is in immediate walking distance to the 6th Avenida pedestrian-only promenade, Capital Square, and the Hotel Panamerican (a good place to stop in, admire the 1930s decor and have a drink). Taxis to further areas of interest (museums) are reasonable and staff will arrange. At Casa Carmel, the location with its beautiful appointments and patio garden, the exceptional service to guests, the good food, the attention to detail -- all superb!

Over night stay.
I was met pleasantly, at the front door by the proprietor. Very pleasant and helpful. She carried my luggage up the stairs to my lovely room. Then she booked my pick up ride to the Guatemala Airport, for the next morning. I had to wake at 3AM for a 4AM pick up. Then she even booked the pick up ride for my return in to Guatemala Airport to transport me back to my home in Antigua. My return flight arrived very late in the evening. The proprietor then went the "distance", she negotiated the price of the private taxi ride, down! Wow, now that is service! When I went down stairs for my early morning pick up, the lady of the house was up and served me coffee, at 3:30 in the morning. Now that is GOOD service. One more very important thing for me, she spoke English. :)

Historic Elegance
We stayed one night at the end of our trip. This is a gracious old home that has been lovingly restored. It's bland facade, which is consistent with the colonial style, belies the beauty that awaits upon stepping through the doorway. The home is truly lovely, peaceful, and comfortable. The owners and staff are welcoming. We stayed in room 1 which faces the street. Once school let out and the bustle of the day had passed, the room was quiet and serene. The only reason for the very good rating as opposed to excellent was the water pressure. It is an old home, so allowances need to be made. However, it took a very long time of running the water to get tepid water for our showers. Water aside, this was a wonderful one night stay and my only regret is that we didn't have time to sample the wonderful breakfast we read about and spend an additional night in this lovely setting. Note: We had numerous Guatemalans and other travelers warn us against staying in Zone 1 and advising us to switch to Zone 10. If you enjoy historic areas, would like to be close to the major city sites and the mercado central, Casa Carmel is within walking distance to all of these. We felt perfectly comfortable and safe as two women traveling alone and walked the streets without incident until dusk.

Very nice change from the hotel scene.
Quiet and very intimate setting. Breakfast was great and the live in host even set up plate and silverware for a delivery order. She does not speak English, but she will get you in easy contact with general manager, Sophie, living nearby who does speak fluently in both languages. They are both very friendly and service oriented! Front is a little spooky at night but in the day is fine. Just a couple blocks from sixth street which is closed to traffic and has lots of food and shopping. It is a great alternative to staying downtown. Rooms are upstairs and care should be taken with carpets as there are no slip free pads underneath. Talked the manager about that. Also, ask for rooms away from street if available. Traffic is busy until around 10 pm. I will stay here again!

Small B&B in central Guatemala City
This small B&B is located in an old and nicely maintained/restored home a few blocks from the pedestrian street (6th Ave.) in central Guatemala City. The proprietor, Sonia, speaks excellent English and attended colllege and worked in the U.S. She was very helpful to us in arranging a day trip to Antigua and in ensuring that our stay was pleasant, and we enjoyed meeting her and her family and talking about things in Guatemala. Breakfast was very good but given that the hotel advertises itself as a B&B, it was surprising that it entailed an additional charge of $5 per person. The streets around the hotel, as in all of central Guatemala City, are rather run-down and probably not for those expecting "first world" luxury, but we felt safe walking around the area. We found some nice restaurants in easy walking distance but would have appreciated a list and map in our room telling us where restaurants and stores were located.

No one was there when we arrived
Unfortunately I can only speak to the external appearance of the hotel. We arrived at 7:30pm, with a confirmed reservation and all of the lights at Casa Carmel were off. No one responded to us knocking or ringing the doorbell, and after waiting for 15 minutes on a dark street in a less than desirable area of Guatemala City with all of our luggage, we cut our losses and found a taxi to take us to another hotel. I don't think it would have bothered me so much if it wasn't such a big safety issue.
