Excellent service, fantastic onsen. Location was perfect for exploring Owakudani, being right at the start of the rope line. Room was perfect with a great view of the mountains overseeing the village down below. Meals were very good. Being non-smokers, we did not encounter any issue even though the ryokan was advertised as smoking allowed. We were lucky to get a room, and would highly recommend.
One of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Very convenient location. Excellent high quality traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner (Hida beef was melt in mouth delicious), great service and lovely hot spring baths.
Memorable (in a good way!) stay - this is a traditional Ryokan-style small Japanese hotel in the Hakone hillside - but recently built, so has modern facilities like aircon and en-suite bathrooms.
It wasn't clear from the hotels.com rate description, but it includes a fantastic 10-course set evening meal served in a private room which you eat wearing the provided kimonos. They cannot cater for vegetarians but can otherwise tweak the dishes to suit requirements.
Japanese breakfast is included too.
The rate includes access to the indoor and outdoor Onsens (hot springs) and I think they can set up private room-specific Onsen if you wish.
You sleep on a futon mat with duvet which they set up in your room while you are eating dinner - was comfortable.
This is a great place for a one-night stay in Hakone.
Things to be aware: little English is spoken. The hotel is next to Sounzan station (with "Ropeway"=cable car, and "cable-car" - which is actually a funicular train). There is also a bus just around the corner which goes to both Hakone and Odowara railway stations - which is not included in the Hakone Free Pass so is missing from the associated map (it is on Google Maps though).
Things the hotel could improve:
Much clearer information on getting to/from the hotel. And add a light you can switch off by the 'bed'.
