Every Expense Spared

Want to stay in a hotel room where every expense has been spared? For £90 a night? Out of season? Then just ask for Room 15, Fir Tree Court. It's the kind of room that would easily embarrass a 2-Star hotelier.
Once you've made the mistake of parking your car in the car park and dragging your luggage down to Reception, you'll have the joy of dragging it all the way back because Fir Tree Court is an out building next to the car park that might once have been a stable block.
Room 15, originally billed to me as Room 115 (a receptionists’ s in-joke, maybe?) bears no resemblance whatsoever to any of the De Vere web site photos. There's just enough space for a double bed and a small corner desk unit. Instead of a wardrobe, you have use of an under-the-stairs cupboard that might have impressed Harry Potter. Even so, you can't open the door fully because the bed is in the way. Instead of a comfortable easy chair to sit on (as per web site photos) you get to sit on a dining room chair probably left over from a previous refit. And the TV? Channels 1 to 5 are yours to enjoy over and over again. For entertainment, look no further than the bathroom shower unit whose workings will confound you for several minutes.
If anyone offers you room 15, walk away. Better still, demand to be moved to a room that corresponds with de Vere’s web site photos. Even better, demand your money back and leave. Highfield no doubt has its admirers but one might easily be forgiven for suspecting that its low
