We originally stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa village and were scheduled for 10nights. However upon arrival we were unimpressed and had a depressing feeling due to the run down nature of the hotel. It's hard to put a finger on it but felt like an old amusement park. My wife and I decided to tour other resorts. We drove to the Fairmont and we loved it. We also looked at the HapunaPrince and didn't really like it much. We switched our reservation to Fairmont and cancelled the remaining stay at the Hilton. We loved it!! However we were informed that Expedia made a mistake and we had to checkout early. Expedia did give us a free night at the Fairmont so we weren't too upset. We looked at reviews and booked the Mauna Kea. When we arrived we were FLOORED! The setting is magical. This is the Hawaiian vacation we had been looking for. We wish we had come straight to the Mauna Kea. We booked a golf view room and it was the lowest grade room and still it was better than any of the other resorts. The beach is absolutely the best beach I or my wife have been to and we travel ALOT!!
The only negative we had was the lady in the tennis center. We needed to borrow tennis shoes and she was unhappy about that. She made snappy comments throughout the checkin/checkout process. Her name was Maria or Mariann or something. If you are working in a resort and customer facing there is no room for rudeness. Everyone else was super nice though.

The room has exceeded my expectations. Very well arranged and furnished, complete with anything I could dream to need during the vacation, great green surrounding, clearly well cared for.
The only disadvantage is it is rather far from the pool (half a mile of drive), and the pool is more of the place to hang out with the drink, rather then swim and spend time with kids. There was not much there to do for children, therefore would probably not advice for the family with young kids. I can see though how it would be totally fine for the adults.

Wonderful relaxing place. Went there for a romantic getaway for my wife and me (without kids). The resort package, though required, includes a lot of benefits (snorkeling, hikes, fitness center, self park, etc.). Staff is fantastic as are the facilities. Fantastic bay for snorkeling. Those that went further away found this cove even better. Somewhat remote from Hilo or Kona, so a bit of a drive for other sites (volcanoes, waterfalls, etc.). Find dining on Maps or Yelp as the hotel food is at hotel prices. Also a few grocery stores nearby for snacks and eats. Overall great.

It was well worth the splurge to stay at the Marriott. My room was upgraded from ocean view to ocean front and the view was amazing - the daily sunsets, the beach and ocean!
The staff were friendly and greeted you daily. The resort is well situated and there are many spots around the resort where you can feel the lovely breeze and take in the scenery.

Stayed several nights overlooking ocean and Big Island slopes. Quiet and comfortable. Buffet style breakfast basically fine to get you're day started. Great large open bar/lounge area for night Hawaii breezes. Sound of the ocean unbeatable!
