Old hotel but comfortable.

The front desk staff were very accomodating. This hotel is old compared to the hotels on either side. Its a bit run down and could use some updating. I would like to see the housecleaning staff do a better job in the bathrooms. The floor tile needs a good scrubbing. Cell reception sucks unless you hang out in the lobby. Wifi is available but again, it only works in the lobby. Like I said, this place is old but our room was spacious and comfortable. We loved the Coqui frogs and the Minah birds. My review sounds negative but we enjoyed our stay. We didn't go there to hang out in the room so it served its purpose. To sleep after long days of visiting family and exploring the island.

I don't like negative reviews because it often seems people are picky but I cannot recommend this hotel. It is in a historic part of town and has a beautiful inner courtyard but that is the end of the beauty of it. We got a room with a kitchenette. The table was a board attached to the wall with a piece of very old looking formica on it. The legs were 2x3 pieces of lumber. The fridge and cooktop were fine. Pans, table ware, utensils were dated but clean. The sleeper sofa was green circa 1972. So was the bed mattress the pad, the green carpet and the lamps. It was shabby. The curtains were threadbare and old. We checked for bed bugs and didn't find them so we pulled the blankets off and used a throw we had brought for cover. We found cockroaches the bathroom but that room was the best in the experience. The shower was awesome. The walls were paper thin. The neighbors' activities and voices were too close for comfort. They bumped the wall and our head board moved. The hotel is non smoking but people smoked in the inner courtyard even though I called the desk to complain. Smoke came into our room from that area day and night. The final straw was a drunken fight between the neighbors. We left two days early.

Pros: close to proximity of doing business
Cons: everything!
Location: it's in the center of hilo
I don't recommend saying at this dump. everything is falling apart. it's old, dirty, plants are growing on the roof. hand rails are either termite eaten or wood rot. The bed is old & torn up. the carpet is old & dirty. the tv is old & not clear. checking in very slow. their computer was working very slowly. only checking out was fast.

Pros: Staff were nice and helpful.
Cons: Just about everything could be improved
Location: Not much to do nearby. A nice park and some shops. A nearby waterfront park was great for snorkelling, but there was no beach in sight.
The hotel is quite dated - probably was due for renovations in the '80s. The room had a musty moldy smell. Carpet in the room was disgusting. Bathroom needs a major refit. Wifi did not work in the room. Cockroach in the bathroom. Sadly, this wasn't the worst hotel we stayed at on our trip...

Pros: Location was good.
Cons: This hotel is an older hotel.
Location: Location was convenient to the function we were attending.
The hotel is an older hotel. Good location. Be sure to look on line for deals before booking. Rooms fluctuate during the different seasons.

There is no night life in Hilo whatsoever- the town shuts down after 7-8 pm basically except for a couple bars. Beautiful views during the day and lots of fun things to do. It rains a lot! Kona has nicer weather and is much more lively. Very peaceful here, but this hotel needs to do a lot to spice up the experience to make it feel more like a resort.
