Beautiful little group of rooms overlooking a lovely koi pond. Quit and romantic and with miles of the volcano national park and a short drive to Hilo. Only downside was that dining options were limited in Volcano during the week and so to had to drive back to Hilo area for food.

This property is very charming and quiet in an area. That is so busy with tourists right now. It’s a little oasis in the rainforest. The room was clean and utterly charming. (106). we were able to relax and enjoy our time there. There are no amenities at the hotel itself but nearby there are plenty of shops and restaurants hidden in the rainforest.

A Hidden Gem
I knew little about this location before booking but the photos looked very interesting. They did not disappoint. The Chalet is a hidden jungle gem located near Volcano Village. It makes one feel they are deep in a tropical village. The decoration, design, and amenities made this place seem magical. The grounds at night give you the feeling of being in an imaginary setting. Truely a great place to stay and visit the park.

Rainforest Oasis & Tranquility
We felt immediately at peace when we arrived at Chalet Kilauea. The grounds are serene, and at night the lights are red which reminded us of lava. Our room was extremely clean, and they already had the heater and a quiet humidifier on which made it incredibly comfortable. The bed and pillows were the perfect combination of supportive but soft. The views made us feel like we were in our own paradise with beautiful sounds of birds and frogs. The amenities in the room were well stocked, the shower had great water pressure with water that stayed warm. We absolutely loved the quirky decor so unique to this property which made it even more charming. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a hideaway! It was an amazing experience. We double-booked this over our condo in Kona because we wanted to be close to the east side of the island for two separate days of adventure and it was so worth it! Day 1: We recommend Hilo and waterfalls followed by stargazing at the volcano (we saw lava at night!) Day 2: hike the volcano and other parts of the National park, then make visits along trails and black sand beaches on the south side on the way back to Kona.
The view from bed
Hallway to the bathroom also with peaceful views
A faux fireplace made it extremely cozy and romantic

If you are going to Volcanos National Park, this is a fantastic location. It only took us 6 minutes to get to the park. It was very clean. I would love to hear the story behind it- the rooms are like works of art. Very funky. Beautiful really. An odd layout- our room didn’t have a chair to sit in to put on my shoes. Just 2 barstools. It is a no- host facility so be prepared to be by yourself in what seems like a remote place. The birds are amazing- you will feel like you are in a rainforest.

Incredible. Once in a lifetime jungle getaway. This coming from born and raised locals - a one of a kind place to stay in Hawaii. We came to Volcano during an off-peak day and they upgraded our rooms to suites which were stunning. I'm a 30+ country world traveler and this is 5 stars in every way. The actual room was very nice and the area quiet. Close driving distance to the national park. There were no staff there and it was self check in.I think only 1 other person staying there when we were there, so it felt very isolated set back in the forested area, that part was a little creepy. I wouldn’t have wanted to stay there as a single person.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! Volcano Village is one of the most remote communities on of the more remote Hawaiian Islands: compounded remoteness. It is located at the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's no secret: yes, it is astonishingly expensive for facilities in our area to do what we do. We really do try to control costs as much as possible. We appreciate all of your observations and we'll see if any of them can be mitigated. E.g., perhaps our central trash bin is not as obvious as it could be; we'll take another look. :) Dehumidifiers get rid of "soggy" in a rainforest. However, if the noise from the machine is too much for anyone, remember it is your room and you are free to turn anything on or off as you please. The machine is not essential for air quality, so whether it is off or full of water from a very humid day, please don't give it a second thought. Thank you so much and Aloha

Mahalo Mike for taking the time to share your experience with us! Our rooms were designed by a local artist; they are definitely eclectic and unique and unforgettable! I'm glad you had a good time. We've been in operation in Volcano since the 90's. This is an adventure tourism area given the national park. People tend to arrive at all times of the day; therefore, the most efficient approach for all is a self-check-in. Travel safely

Could be charming, but grounds are neglected and furniture inadequate. ONE chair for a "self-catering" room? Does the second guest stand to eat? Room had 2 small nightstands and one larger that doubled as the "counter" for the "self-catering" barely enough room to prepare coffee. Our companions' room did not even have the self-catering for one friendly worker that we happened to meet b/c we found the property early, saw no one. Note on advance email that "there are only two of us for 3 properties" apparently was the excuse. Must email to communicate, phone calls unanswered. My advance email went unanswered. Dirty, sagging cushions on the porch chairs. Dead ferns & foliage lying all around. That is not "ecological." Business cards state "mini wet bar" and "cable TV." TVs were mounted, w/ a sign "do not work-amenity coming in the future." Sign in lobby "to print boarding passes, see front desk;" which did not exist. Because of confusion about how to enter the locked interior, some guests looked for their units via the unit porch doors, which HAD NO NUMBERS. At 11 PM an arriving guest tried his key in our exterior door. We are familiar w/ Volcano; stayed at another property in in the past. We know that none are luxurious, but this property was unacceptable, except for the bathroom. Tiny, but beautiful new tile work in the shower. Apparently the electrical wiring is not quite adequate, however, as there were instructions & warnings about using the hair dryer.

We appreciate and take to heart all reviews even if they are not glowing. While we understand we cannot please everyone and that every property has room for improvement, this review doesn't reflect the reality we know to be true. Admittedly with so many happy travelers, it's saddening to read about the disappointment within this review. We've had hundreds of travelers stay with us since the pandemic and their comments don't echo this one at all. In fact the vast majority are very pleased. This area is not only very remote, it's very quiet and representative of a time long past. It's not busy or built-up. Most lodging options here in the village are less than 5 rooms so it's not uncommon to feel like you're the only one staying the night. Travelers searching for a busy and manufactured vacation experience typical of mainstream hotels will not find that in sleepy Volcano Village. This area is what it is and will never be anything like other major tourist areas within Hawaii and outside Hawaii. It's a step back in time, travelers are encouraged to expect and embrace that. 3 points: 1. Volcano grounds are not neglected, they are natural and authentic. As such, they also preserve this delicate and rare rain-forest which is under constant threat... as were all the other Hawaii rainforests which are now non-existent. We live with the rain-forest, we don't fight it. 2. Yes, hairdryers belong in a GFCI protected outlet and we point that out since sometimes travelers need to be reminded; there is nothing inadequate about the wiring. 3. Yes, this is a self-catering experience; we are pretty clear that there is no front desk. However, we are not alone in that for our area; in fact, we don't know of any operations in the area with a front desk. Volcano is an adventure tourism location and most travelers spend the bulk of their time exploring the vast regions of the national park. Hilo and Kona are each a few hours away, however, they do offer mainstream lodging with front desks...if that's of interest. In the travel industry, when so many things are "wrong" with the property, that usually means it wasn't the right fit. It really sounds like the property just wasn't the right fit for these travelers and that is OK. This can happen to the fault of no one. It's unfortunate but no less true. We always encourage travelers to really research areas so the overall picture is processed with the right perspective. As always, we'll continue our quest to better communicate the experience our product offers.

Aloha and thank you for taking the time to post your review about your stay at our budget friendly Volcano Hale (Shared Bathroom) facility. We are sorry to hear that you were not pleased with your booking. Guests looking for a budget friendly location typically love Volcano Hale and the simplicity that it has to offer. I can assure anyone looking to book here that this property is cleaned on a daily basis including our walls and carpets. After a deep inspection we were unable to locate any “damaged” furniture nor exposed staples. While we do acknowledge that on the exterior of our building there were a couple of spiderwebs (typical for Volcano Climate) we have since mitigated this problem and we do apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. We offer three different properties Chalet Kilauea (Deluxe), Lokahi Lodge (standard), and our Volcano Hale (Budget Friendly Shared Bathroom). Perhaps this guest misunderstood the room type when they booked and expected Chalet Kilauea instead of Volcano Hale. This guest did reach out and was offered a free upgrade to our Chalet, unfortunately they never responded.

Location: Very convenient access to Volcanoes National Park. In a residential area that overall felt safe; however, the large warning signs in several places on the property warning about parking at your own risk and the house next door that looked like it had a broken window and abandoned cars made it feel otherwise (accidentally turned into the wrong driveway). I did not encounter a single person during my stay which also felt strange. Accommodation: Volcano Hale is an older multi-story house with multiple rooms for rent and shared bathrooms. It is generally clean and well maintained with access to a spacious kitchen; some bathrooms have been renovated and others have not. There is a musty smell to the entire house that made me concerned for either mothballs or fungus, and the basement room where I stayed was quite cold at night. Service: After-hours check-in at the main location (marked as Volcano Hale-Chalet Kilauea Collection on Google Maps) consisted of picking up keys and instructions on getting to the actual location of Volcano Hale, which is a few blocks away (marked as Volcano Bed & Breakfast on Google Maps). While it would have been useful to know ahead of time that the check-in location was not the location of the stay, the instructions were otherwise very detailed and the host is very responsive to questions. Overall: Reasonable facilities for the price point, though if I were to return I would opt to pay slightly more for better accommodations.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! Yes, we offer 3 properties (room types). Your shared bathroom type booked is 1 of 3 choices; all others have private bathrooms and upgraded options. I haven't seen abandoned cars or broken windows anywhere near the facility; although I haven't ventured down private driveways. I can say that there isn't anything visible and Volcano Village is essentially a safe retirement village on the Big Island. There are no basements, did you mean ground floor? There are probably only a handful of basements in the entire State. Volcano is cold since we are in a rainforest at a 4,000 foot elevation; all floors can be cold depending upon down-drafts from Mauna Kea/Mauna Loa. Each room comes with heating. "Park at Your Own Risk" is a common insurance thing. Really, Hawaii in general is just a safe place to be! After being shutdown for essentially 15 months, we are looking forward to a return of our valued guests. We expect this to be a slow return; our facilities are not crowded but that is perhaps a good thing!

Great value- clean and comfortable!
Volcano Hale is an older home, but is well-maintained, spacious, and comfortable. Our room had a king bed, lots of pillows, crisp sheets, large closet, de-humidifier and heater (for the damp climate). There is a bathroom on each floor, which is shared with one or two other rooms. The bathroom has a generous supply of clean, fluffy towels and toiletries. The kitchen has a cooktop, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and refrigerator. Since buying food or eating out is so expensive in this area, the kitchen is a big plus!

Aloha and thank you for posting your review! We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Feel free to contact us if you are ever in our area again. For those looking to book with us, please be advised that we offer three different properties. Our budget option is Volcano Hale. Volcano Hale is a shared property and as such, may experience noise and busy times more so than non-shared facilities. The rooms are efficiency sized and smaller than average. Volcano Hale is a historic property offering basic or simple features for the modest traveler looking for adventure in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. As a basic, historic property, Volcano Hale is our only property offering shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. The property has a rustic, "dated" style true to its era. Although this style may not appeal to all travelers, we're happy to be of service to those travelers that own a travel style with an appreciation for simplicity, self-service, and shared areas. We do offer 2 other properties with a modern approach + PRIVATE BATHROOMS, appealing to mainstream travelers: Standard private accommodations at LOKAHI LODGE and Upscale private accommodations at CHALET KILAUEA (this reviewer stayed here). All three products (room types) are available for booking under our brand: Kilauea Hospitality Group. Please take note of these different categories while booking so your room matches your expectation. Thank you once again. Aloha!

The setting and property is beautiful! It's in the middle of the rainforest and the property itself has lush landscaping and a koi pond. I understand each room's layout and decor is unique. Ours was a duplex with the bedroom on the second floor. With windows on three sides of the room, it was quite peaceful to lay in bed looking at trees in all directions. During our stay on the Big Island, we stayed at four different places and this was by far our favorite.

Aloha and thank you for posting your review on Expedia. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Feel free to contact us if you are ever in our area again. For those looking to book with us, please be advised that we offer three different properties. Our budget option Volcano Hale. Aloha!

Easy checkin, friendly staff. I stayed in the Chalet. It was cold but there were 2 heaters in the room, one looks like a fireplace! The shower was huge and there were 2 shower heads. Plates and utensils were provided. Quick response to text messages. About 5 min drive to entrance of Volcano National Park. The only thing is the walls are a bit thin, we could hear the couple staying in the room above us arguing and walking around.

It is hard to describe staying at the Chateau Kilauea. I believe it was the most upscale of the properties that Kilauea Property Group manages. We paid $150 for one night. My only hopes were that it was clean and comfortable. What we got was a room in a building that you went through a maze to reach the entrance (fine). Then up the stairs into the room itself. The bed linens did not smell fresh. They smelled musty. The room had a 12 foot built in glow light about 6 " wide built into the wall across from the bed. When you turned on the glow light switch it went through all colors of the rainbow. (I have a video on my phone.). The bathroom is down some other steps and is the closest thing I have ever been in that is like a grotto. Weird real or stone rock work everywhere, from counter to two person shower. The bathroom also has a built in glow light in the ceiling. Someone definitely spent some money on this room. So. It wasn't bad, but wasn't good. Maybe ask for a video tour of your room before booking. I'd prefer spending the money on freshly washed linens and skip the glow lights.

It was unique. I loved the room and it was very different than any other place we've stayed at. Would definitely stay there again. The drive is far from Hilo and Kona but it's worth the stay.
