The view from atop this mountain can be amazing. Looking out you can see the tallest mountain in Georgia, Brasstown Bald, the small town of Hiawassee, Lake Chatuge, & in the distance North Carolina. The climb up is treacherous to vehicles. During my time up here I tried many times to get up the dirt road. With my two wheel drive car it is nearly impossible to even reach the parking area. In a four wheel drive truck we made it to the parking area, a space for 2-3 cars. After this you walk up an increasingly steep climb of what used to be a dirt road, now with large ditches, holes, and large rocks. But, once you reach the top it's worth it. This cinematic 360 degree view of the surrounding forests, lake, and mountains is something you don't expect from this area. For being in the southern Appalachians it's hard to beat.
If able come back at night because the sky is dark enough up here to get an amazing view of the stars. Still from Bell Mountain.
This might be dark, but I love it! There were so many rays hitting the ground. The mountains break to reveal layers of the Smokies! Night over Bell mountain. When I went up it was completely clouded over. I was hoping for the clouds to pass and to get a post rain sunset. After waiting till night the clouds remained overhead, but broke apart in the valley. I didn't get the starts I was hoping for, but instead saw this beautiful view. Bell mountain has received a facelift. To the dismay of some, but the Benefit of all it is now a public viewpoint with a paved road all the way to the top. At the top you will now find multiple observation balconies. It stoically stands over Lake Chatuge. From here you can see the North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia smokies. The first of a few photos taken from Bell Mountain. In my opinion, the best place to view a sunset in Georgia and southern Appalachian Mountains. Staying even later allows you to see a beautiful show! the stars came out after the clouds left and offers an unparalleled vista to see stars. You used to be able to camp up here at night, I don't know if that is still possible. I know I know. Your tired of Bell Mountain photos. But, I can't really describe the view from here. The best in Georgia easily, and the sunset we had was as Georgia peachy as you can get.
So, don't forget this spot. When you visit north Georgia make sure to stop up here for sunset. From the valley Bell Mountain looks like a pointy mountain with a white tip. When you hike up to the top, you see this white rocks with graffiti everywhere. The graffiti here has become somewhat of a tradition. As this is US forest service, this place is technically off limits, but not enforced.
YHC college students come up here often and normally leave behind messages, quotes, symbols, or even paintings. These rocks are naturally almost white, so it lends itself to being a great backdrop for this. If you are able to get your car to the parking area and then able to walk the rest of the road, you to can add your handiwork to these rocks and leave a little something behind. Look at all those layers!
Most people discount the smokies as not Here is the culmination of what I have learned so far. I think I still have a long way to go, but wanted to share this. So....
This is roughly 150 images spanning 1:30 hours. I took an image just after sunset to get some color in the trees, but after seeing it in editing lowered the levels because I didn't like it.
The star trails were 30 second exposures (140 images). The base landscape is an image. The lights are taken from about 20 images to show where cars traveled and how full the valley is with houses. Then I edited the base landscape, layered in the lights, and finally the sky.
This place offers great sunsets, and great views of the stars! On my first day I just wanted to get there before sunset. I wasn't expecting this beautiful Georgia peach color to spread across the sky and mountains.
I had come up here before, before it was an overlook. On an older Trover post you can read about how it was a local and college spot, you had to walk up the mountain and it was an unenforced illegal area to climb on. I was originally upset to hear it had been turned into an overlook. But... after being able to get up here easily and watch this sunset it was hard to remain mad. it is one of the best viewpoints I have ever seen. I went to Bell 4 consecutive evenings. Every sunset was different. This night I was treated to rain and lightning from the North and clearing skies to the south. I stayed the latest this evening hoping to see some lightning in the valley, but alas it was not to be. While down for the eclipse I did get to stop by my favorite overlook. Just incase you need more incentive. Serenity at its best. Great scenic spot on 76
#BeachBound ✨ Climbed up to the top of the taller peak of Bell Mountain and looked south to see the Milky Way. The bright lights is the town of Hiawassee. From here you can get some beautiful panoramas and views of 4 states. The view from atop the mountain looking away from the lake and towards the mountains to the south. Gorgeous view of the mountains with the fog An older photo of the lake. Great place to jet ski and explore islands in the middle of the lake. Did I also say it has great views? Great view of Lake Chatuge. Steep grade. Asphalt drive to top with Parking and observation decks.
