Its years and scale immediately transport you to a different age, and you could forgive one for quickly adopting the role of the landed gentry. Beautifully styled throughout, the impressive original features will come as no surprise. Intricate stained-glass windows, carved panelling and a set of servants' bells are all taken as read. But it would be a real cool customer who wasn't impressed by the original guestbook dating back to the mid-18th century. This rural retreat truly showcases all of Oughtershaw Hall's history, yet is still tastefully packed with all mod cons. Entering the house through an impressive stone loggia, via the former servants' entrance, guests will find themselves following a fabulous stone-flagged labyrinth of winding passageways. Guided by the enticing whiff of woodsmoke (depending on the time of the year), take your pick from any one of four seating areas - each one an absolute haven of tranquillity. Curl up with a glass of red in front of a roaring fire in the drawing-room. Or perhaps swap stories beside the woodburning stove in the sitting room, where we'll be surprised if the conversation doesn't turn to the stunning stained-glass windows displaying the family's coat of arms. Then there's the historical oak table, inscribed with the initials of previous owner Charles Woodd, in 1876\. Or the wooden panel in the wall which hides the original peephole. Why not help yourself to a real page-turner in the cosy library, while away a lazy afternoon to the sound of the babbling beck as it meanders past the house and down the valley. Perhaps unsurprisingly by now, another stove can be found in the snug off the kitchen - it's the perfect space to catch up with the rest of your party. Oughtershaw Hall's well-equipped kitchen is vast. Open-plan and L-shaped, the spacious breakfast bar or an impressive dining table can seat your entire party. While in quieter moments, the built-in window seats provide restful views out to the garden. Opposite the kitchen, where once stood an old pantry, now sits a contemporary, spacious utility room. A separate boot room also contains the inviting 8-seater sauna. And should the Yorkshire weather close in, there's a basement games room well-stocked with entertainment for kids and big kids alike. If the downstairs is relaxing, then the seven impeccably designed bedrooms beckon tantalisingly from the first floor. Rumour has it that Charles I rested his head here - one suspects while it was still attached to his body. Many of the bedrooms have old character features, window seats and luxurious en-suites. A further downstairs bedroom has an en-suite shower room making it the perfect choice for anyone with limited mobility. The pool, housed in an old farm building, is just a few steps from the main house. It's the perfect example of how the house manages to keep its integrity while offering modern-day facilities. Beautiful, bespoke, water-height windows and underwater lighting set the mood. And if the children haven't sprouted gills, perhaps you can snatch a quiet moment to float leisurely on your back. Gaze up to a lofty roof complete with characterful wooden beams. The houses' original entrance - complete with ceiling rose, brass chandelier, and even more seating - is now the access to the gardens. Guests can follow the romantic ghyll through the verdant thicket as Oughtershaw Beck tumbles and turns to meet the River Wharf. There's more than one perfect picnic stop en route. Back at the house, intrepid explorers or mooching meanderers can take to the patio and marvel at the extensive views. A stone inscription on the hall's wall proudly reads: "Welcome as the flowers in spring." Say no more. ## Property amenities ### Pool/Spa - Indoor pool - Sauna ### Internet - Available in the house: WiFi ### Food and drink - Dishwasher ### Dining - Dining table ### Bedrooms - 8 bedrooms ### Bathroom - 6 bathrooms - Bathtub - Shower ### Living spaces - Dining table - Fireplace ### Entertainment - DVD player - Smart TV ### Outdoor areas - Barbecue grill - Garden - Patio ### Laundry - Laundry facilities - Washing machine ### Pets - Pet friendly ### Suitability/Accessibility - Smoking not allowed ### Location highlights - In a rural location ### Things to do - Arcade/game room ### Safety features - Carbon monoxide detector not reported (host has not indicated whether there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property; consider bringing a portable detector) - Smoke detector not reported (host has not indicated whether there is a smoke detector on the property) ### General - Garden - Unit size: 8,084 square feet ## Similar properties ![Luxury Studio Suite | Individually decorated, individually furnished, desk, laptop workspace](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/77000000/76270000/76266500/76266496/b8b38886.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Grassington Lodge Skipton - Pet friendly - Parking included - Free WiFi - Laundry 8.6 Excellent 180 reviews $87 nightly $105 total Apr 12 - Apr 13 Total with taxes and fees [](https://www.expedia.com/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-12&endDate=2026-04-13&selected=76266496&PinnedHotelID=76266496&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/35000000/34570000/34565500/34565443/15da3fea.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Gamekeepers Inn Skipton - Pool - Spa - Parking included - Free WiFi 9.2 Wonderful 153 reviews $147 nightly $177 total Apr 13 - Apr 14 Total with taxes and fees [](https://www.expedia.com/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-13&endDate=2026-04-14&selected=34565443&PinnedHotelID=34565443&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Cottage | Interior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/45000000/44460000/44459300/44459274/b03a511f.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Grange House Skipton - Kitchen - Washer - Parking included - Free WiFi 10 Exceptional 1 review [](https://www.expedia.com/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-16&endDate=2026-04-17&selected=44459274&PinnedHotelID=44459274&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Terrace/patio](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/34000000/33320000/33317100/33317064/956b625f.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Wensleydale Glamping Pods Leyburn - Kitchen - Parking included - Free WiFi - Outdoor Space 10 Exceptional 16 reviews [](https://www.expedia.com/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-16&endDate=2026-04-17&selected=33317064&PinnedHotelID=33317064&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) [Compare similar properties](/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-16&endDate=2026-04-17&selected=72503119&PinnedHotelID=72503119&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2&comparePropertyIds=72503119,76266496,34565443,44459274,33317064) ## Policies ### Check-in Check-in time starts at 4:00 PM Minimum check-in age: 18 ### Check-out Check-out before 10:00 AM ### Special check-in instructions You will receive an email from the host with check-in and check-out instructions Information provided by the property may be translated using automated translation tools ### Pets Pets allowed Service animals are welcome, and are exempt from fees ### Children and extra beds Children are welcome ### Events No events allowed ### Smoking Smoking is not permitted ## Important information ### You need to know Extra-person charges may apply and vary depending on property policy Government-issued photo identification and a credit card, debit card, or cash deposit may be required at check-in for incidental charges Special requests are subject to availability upon check-in and may incur additional charges; special requests cannot be guaranteed Onsite parties or group events are strictly prohibited Host has not indicated whether there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property; consider bringing a portable detector with you on the trip Host has not indicated whether there is a smoke detector on the property This property is managed through our partner, Vrbo. Well maintained, excellent facilities, warm and comfortable. The location is excellent, walking, photography (especially for no light pollution night shots) there is virtually everything you could want. Will we be back - undoubtedly! ##### Kevan J. The home is absolutely stunning with spacious rooms to accommodate everyone. Its a grand space with a cozy atmosphere. The team that look after the property are friendly and helpful. The house has amazing grounds which can be enjoyed all year round. If your looking for some where special to make happy memories Oughtershaw will not disappoint! ##### Renea R. Ben and Tara cater to all your needs and go above and beyond to make sure you have everything. Once you get to Oughtershaw, you don't really need to go anywhere else! The property is top quality and has enough space that everyone is more than comfortable. There are plenty of places to explore, relax, cook and even swimming and a sauna. It caters for everyone and I wouldn't hesitate to return. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent #### Caroline I. Oct 18, 2023 #### The most stunning property and location This property is outstanding along with the location and grounds it sits in. We are a large family catering for needs from an 88 year old to 6 month old baby and we did not want for anything. The facilities were excellent with the added benefit of swimming pool and sauna . The property was spotlessley clean and very comfortable ,there was also ample parking. Ben who met us at the property was great ,he explained everything to us and even produced a bottle of wine as it was my sisters 60th Birthday celebration weekend. We would have no hesitation to book again and we are actually planning for next year, I would also suggest for Sunday lunch to go to The George Inn which is about 5 miles away ##### Caroline I. The house has been done up to an excellent and very tasteful standard - no expense spared! It feels so comfortable, cosy and enjoyable being there, despite it being fairly large all the home-comforts really does make it a very special and warm place to come and either relax or enjoy a special get together. We especially appreciated the swimming pool and sauna (including the kids) as well as the basement games room for the kids. One thing to note, it's setting is very rural so perfect if you want a bit of peace and quiet but just to note it is not any where too near to main towns/cities so if the weather is poor the swimming pool/games rooms/TV would be your options.... Lastly, we want to say a big thank you to Ben, Estate Manager, excellent in every way and very friendly and helpful as was Tara when booking our stay. Overall an excellent and beautiful stay, thank you very much to all. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent #### Ann H. Sep 2, 2023 #### Great Holiday We enjoyed our family time together at the lovely Oughtershaw Hall. There was always plenty to do, from water volleyball in the stunning pool, walking round the gardens, playing games in the cellar, sitting by the fire chatting, barbecuing, playing board games, sweating it out in the sauna, watching the wild life in the garden, playing football, gathering round for family meals and a wonderful place to have a treasure hunt! The facilities were super, luxuriously warm everything so well stocked. We enjoyed some scenic walks (one in the rain and some in the dry) and it was always lovely to return to the welcoming Hall with only the sheep to disturb if we were laughing too loudly! Ben was very helpful, respectful and unobtrusive. We have all come home with some marvellous family memories. ##### Ann H. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent Sep 28, 2023 #### A wonderful experience from start to finish. Excellent venue and customer service. Fabulous Venue!!! The most amazing weekend!! Oughtershaw is the most stunning venue, and we will definitely be back. All of the rooms are individual and have their own character. Every single person in our group was stunned by how beautiful the hall was, the grounds and the hall are breath taking. Everything was super clean, the beds were really comfy and to have a sauna and a pool was amazing. We were all excited about the weekend and kept looking at the video and pictures, I can honestly say the pictures on the website just don't do it justice. It's more fabulous in reality. I would also like to say that from my initial contact with Tara and the welcome received from Ben, I could not fault the personal customer service. 5 star if not more! From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent #### Lynn C. Aug 31, 2024 #### The most amazing holiday house ….ever! Three generations stayed at Oughtershaw Hall to celebrate my upcoming 70th birthday . Even before we arrived Tara and her team had been so helpful with our various queries ( extra duvets, no feathers , car charging ) Ben was there to meet us as we arrived and we felt at home straight away …the treat basket and sunflowers were a nice touch . The sunflowers provided the only sun we saw that week but the house was so spacious and the grounds so beautiful we still had an amazing time ….and of course there was the swimming pool! Just the right size ( and depth) for “ proper swimming” but also to accommodate the crocodile, dolphin and doughnuts that added to the fun and games . There were so many comfortable areas to just sit and look at the view or enjoy sitting by the fires….it was chilly some evenings but everything was available for fire lighting . Even after we left the great service continued and my youngest grandchild’s soft toy which was found under a bed will be posted back to him . We would love to return ! ##### Lynn C. The house and grounds continue to be maintained to the highest standard. Tara & Ben were great as usual to deal with, and we look forward to visiting again in the future. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent #### Kevan J. Dec 8, 2025 #### Another excellent visit This is our umpteenth visit to Oughtershaw Hall and, again, we were not disappointed. This time our pre-Christmas No Tinsel week was as good as ever. Such a comfortable place to stay. The walk along the Beck is a little different at this time of year, varying from a mere trickle to a flow resembling the Orinoco - just had to play Enya when we got back into the warmth of the Hall. Our plans for next year are already coming to fruition. Thank you for such lovely accommodation in a truly wonderful part of the country. ##### Kevan J. It really feels like home from home now. Thanks Tara and Ben for looking after us, we’ll see you again soon! From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent Aug 16, 2024 #### Excellent (again) I'm lucky enough to have enjoyed several stays at Oughtershaw and it never falls anywhere short of brilliant. The new riverside walk is a fantastic addition to the estate and was enjoyed by all the members of our family from George (1) to Great-Granma (84). We had birthday and retirement celebrations, a murder mystery evening, and lots of time just enjoying the house, the facilities and the surrounding countryside. The walk down Langstrothdale to 'Helen's House' has to be one of our favourite things to do in the whole world and this year I even made it up the ramp at the end of the return leg in one go. We love it here and hope to be back again very soon. Verified ### 10/10 Excellent #### Rosemary J. Scrupulously clean. Well equipped kitchen which was a joy to cook in. Lots of comfy places to curl up with a book or join in family games. The pool is gorgeous. The only setback for us was that the house is very isolated and there was nothing (apart from spectacular walks and views) for miles around, so every trip or meal out for our group of 11 meant 3 people did a lot of driving, on top of long journeys to and from Yorkshire (from as far as Brussels). None of this detracts from the loveliness of our week or our desire to return. ##### Rosemary J. Absolutely fantastic house with great facilities. The pool & sauna were even better in the cold weather. The caretaker Ben was amazing, nothing too much trouble he even came to help did the cars out when we had a dump snow. This added to our enjoyment and the Christmas season. We hope to return very soon. ##### beverley geary From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent Nov 28, 2022 #### Memorable family gathering Family from around the globe gathered at Outershaw Hall to celebrate Mum's 90th birthday. From the minute we arrived and were welcomed by Ben, to our leaving and once again chatting with him, we all had a wonderful time. With ages ranging from 18 to 90 there was something for everyone, meeting in the evenings for dinner in the kitchen/dining/lounge area: a space so perfect for us that many of the other ground floor rooms were never used. The bedrooms were all comfortable, with lovely views, and the bathrooms spotlessly clean and warm. The kitchen was well equipped with all we could possibly need, and we made good use of the sauna, swimming pool and games room. We enjoyed lunches at The George in Hubberholme, and the wonderful walks right on the doorstep. The welcome basket and bubbly were an unexpected and much appreciated surprise. Thank you for a most enjoyable and memorable stay. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent #### Kevan J. Nov 25, 2022 #### A repeat visit - just as good as, if not better than, the previous ones. We have visited Oughtershaw Hall several times over the last few years. A group of 16 friends coming together for a week in a splendid property in a lovely part of the world. We made full use of all of the excellent facilities - swimming pool, sauna, games room, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. Now, with a covered walk way through to the swimming pool, there's no need to brave the elements going for a swim. The surrounding countryside has many excellent walks, good pubs, great views and, is in God's Own County, who could ask for more. The bedrooms are warm, airy, comfortable, clean and tidy. Cooking facilities can exercise the organisation of Sunday Lunch somewhat challenging, but a large lunch was served to everyone's satisfaction. Help is on hand should there be problems, Ben is a real asset. Always cheerful, happy to oblige, and rapidly responsive if there are problems. All in all, a great week (again) in a great property. Would we go back again? A resounding "Yes, most definitely". ##### Kevan J. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent #### Nicole K. The perfect venue for our party of 16\. The property was very grand with plenty of room for our party of various ages to all feel comfortable and enjoy the house and the impressive and well maintained grounds. The house was lovely and clean, extremely well equipped and the pool and sauna were the icing on the cake. Ben met us on arrival, he was very helpful and was only a phone call away if needed. The welcome hamper, flowers and champagne were a lovely touch. A fabulous weekend was had by all, lots of great memories made and we hope to return again in the future. We got everyone together for Granma Dawn's 80th (two years late due to Covid) and the first time her family had all been together for over 20 years. The first reaction from everyone was 'this place is amazing' and so it proved. The layout, decor, fixtures and fittings all contributed to the atmosphere of relaxation, celebration, and togetherness; the pool and sauna provided that little touch of luxury; while the setting in the Dales gave some of us exhilarating (and sometimes breathless) views from the saddles of our bikes. We will definitely be back. From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent Aug 6, 2022 #### A wonderful home. Such a beautiful property. We had a chef with us and the large kitchen worked perfectly for great family dining. Great cycling and walking from the doorstep though walking best if you drive a couple of miles first. Swimming pool was 12m and lovely and clean / fresh From a partner site ### 10/10 Excellent Jun 7, 2022 #### Stunning We had a fabulous family time away. The house and gardens are beautiful maintained and cared for, the views are stunning. We all loved the pool and temperature was perfect for all. The beds are all comfortable and we slept well. The WiFi is really good in the house. The chip shop in Hawes was a winner and the ice cream shop was a great treat. ## Explore a world of travel with Expedia - [Lodging](?equalTargetTab=tab-0) - [Flights](?equalTargetTab=tab-1) - [Packages](?equalTargetTab=tab-2) - [Cars](?equalTargetTab=tab-3) - [Vacation Rentals](?equalTargetTab=tab-4) - [Things to Do](?equalTargetTab=tab-5) - [Pennypot Cottage - UK41787](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-2-Bedroom-Accommodation-In-Kettlewell.h89295110.Hotel-Information) - [Dales Edge Skipton](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Dales-Edge-Skipton.h59570103.Hotel-Information) - [Number 61 Skipton](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Number-61-Skipton.h88088384.Hotel-Information) - [Albert Cottage, Skipton](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Family-Friendly-Sleeps-6.h57456104.Hotel-Information) - [Laurel Bank Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Laurel-Bank-Cottage.h26990744.Hotel-Information) - [Woodman Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Woodman-Cottage.h31003598.Hotel-Information) - [Lane Fold Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Lane-Fold-Cottage.h30996160.Hotel-Information) - [Lottie's Loft](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Lotties-Loft.h30995769.Hotel-Information) - [2 bedroom accommodation in Gargrave, near Skipton](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-2-Bedroom-Accommodation-In-Gargrave.h58113283.Hotel-Information) - [Casa Del Artista- An Exquisite Getaway](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Casa-Del-Artista-An-Exquisite-Getaway.h89491800.Hotel-Information) - [The Shippen provides the perfect countryside getaway for friends and family.](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-3-Bedroom-Accommodation-In-Barden.h93240911.Hotel-Information) - [Croft Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Croft-Cottage.h44511505.Hotel-Information) - [Stank House Farm, Bolton Abbey](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Stank-House-Farm.h41486347.Hotel-Information) - [Skirfare Barn](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Skirfare-Barn.h13125716.Hotel-Information) - [The Shippon](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-The-Shippon.h26995362.Hotel-Information) - [Cottage with pretty garden and views. 2 mins from cobbled square, pubs/amenities](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Cottage-With-Pretty-Garden-And-Views-2-Mins-From-Cobbled-Square.h72404566.Hotel-Information) - [Glebe Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Glebe-Cottage.h44509284.Hotel-Information) - [Angel Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Angel-Cottage.h27000465.Hotel-Information) - [Little Pinfold Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Little-Pinfold-Cottage.h48207858.Hotel-Information) - [Grange Cottage](https://www.expedia.com/Skipton-Hotels-Grange-Cottage.h26995093.Hotel-Information) - [Flights to Craven District](https://www.expedia.com/Destinations-In-Craven-District.d553248635976002826.Flight-Destinations) - [Craven District Vacations](https://www.expedia.com/Craven-District.d553248635976002826.Destination-Travel-Guides) - [Car rentals near Craven District](https://www.expedia.com/Destinations-In-Craven-District.d553248635976002826.Car-Rental-Destinations) - [Craven District Vacation Rentals](https://www.expedia.com/Destinations-In-Craven-District.d553248635976002826.Vacation-Rental-Destinations) - [Things to do in Craven District](https://www.expedia.com/Things-To-Do-In-Craven-District.d553248635976002826.Travel-Guide-Activities)
