Seaside pool is fabulous, the rest is very average
The reason to stay here is the pool and sea access. It is extremely relaxing to read a book, watch the boats go by, swim and lounge all day. The region smells of pine and eucalyptus, and is very green and wild. It must also be noted that the restaurants along the main street in Giens, where the hotel is located, are all lovely. We loved the atmosphere of the region. On the downside, we stayed in an old room with musty carpet, mold on the air conditioning unit, outdated fixtures and lots of noise from the street below. We like old, charming, yesteryear patina properties, but this room was worn out not in a good way. The staff often seemed stressed and disorganised. The fine dining restaurant in the hotel was not worth it. Painfully slow service and so-so food, much better to dine elsewhere in town. The pool area is only open from 9am to 6pm, which means us early risers had to find somewhere else to swim at dawn. A small inconvenience, but annoying as a paying customer nonetheless. Finally, while the hotel advertised many COVID-19 sanitary precautions for the pool area, we did not once see any lounge chairs be disinfected. Everyday we watched them be unstacked at 9am, re-stacked at 6pm, with no cleaning. Mask-wearing by staff was hit-and-miss, and often masks were pulled down below the chin. Disinfectant gel is provided throughout the hotel common areas and many guests voluntarily wore masks.

The "Grand Hotel" of Giens
The hotel has a very nice location, with private beach and pool (a few minutes walk), as well as access to tennis court (in the Provencal Gardens located also a few minutes away), and a gourmet restaurant with a unique view. Book early for a room with sea view (worth the additional cost), and plan for dinner at the restaurant in the main season (ask for a table on the terrace).

Beautiful swimming
We spent three nights at Le Provencal. The hotel is in a sweet village, now a bustling resort, on top of a steep hill. The view from the terrace (and from the sea-side rooms, which we did not get) is fabulous. You walk down a road a few minutes to get to the hotel's other property on the water's edge, which contains a few residences for rent, a small but well-cared for garden, a tennis court, and a sea-front restaurant in the garden. The best, though, is the "beach," which isn't a beach at all, but a cement platform right on the water, with deck chairs, a ladder going right into the sea, and a seawater swimming pool. It is in a rocky cove with cactus and pines clinging to the rocks, just beautiful, and the water is so clear, wonderful, wonderful. This is the selling point of this hotel. The rooms are small and not so great, the service business-like and ok, the hotel's restaurants very expensive. We didn't try them. But oh, the swimming . . . .!!!

beautiful views over the Mediterranean Sea
There are only 2 roads to access the Presqu'ile de Giens, which can make it a challenge to reach your destination. A word of advice: don't try to go there in the morning, as the beachgoers will be clogging the roads; and don't try to leave Giens in the late afternoon, as the same beach-goers will be leaving as well (at least in summer). Otherwise, once you have reached the hotel (located in the very center of "downtown" Giens), drop off your luggage and go park on one of the 2 free municipal parking lots near by. The hotel rooms are quite standard, but very clean and the ones facing the ocean have a gorgeous view. However, they might not be air-conditioned (ours wasn't) and it is advisable to close the shutters during the heat of the day to keep the room relatively cool. It is also to be noted that there are mosquitoes, so keep the light off in the room in the evening if the window is open. We had breakfast at the hotel and the food choices were quite nice: danishes, of course, but also eggs, ham, yogurt and cereals. The hotel is centrally located, yet very close to the beaches. All in all, a great choice for the area.
