Parts of the historic building date back to the 15th century. With log fires and different areas to relax with a drink it's a lovely atmospheric, comfortable place to stay, with friendly staff.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Black Swan. The staff were friendly and efficient. Our room was pleasant and adequate for a short stay. Also, the breakfast very was good. I think that I might have already left a review about the fact that the stairs up to our room no. 58 are not very easy particularly on the second flight where the handrail is fixed to the wall so one can't grip it. Apart from that it was perfect.

Okay. Leaves a lot to be desired
Stay all right. Too much self service for my liking and not nearly enough explanations on how exactly to serve yourself both at dinner and breakfast.

Second time staying here. Nice option right on the Square. The pub, food, beer garden especially all nice. Rooms good, but vary a bit. No complaints.

Helmsley woof
Enjoyed the style and location in the village. Stepping out into the market square just set the scene perfectly. Lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs to help you while away the day. We would of preferred not to spend our time with so many dogs tho.

Too many stairs
Enjoyed our stay only down side being lots of stairs no lift in this beautiful old building. Parking can be a challenge not many spaces and on a first come first served basis. We were lucky enough to have a blue badge so could park out front free.

Service level has dropped significantly, not because of the staff but because of a new rule that you now have to stand in a long line to order anything. Food quality has dropped and parking can be a real problem.

Suitably Impressed
Couldn't fault the hotel although lack of parking was a bit of a chew. Room was spacious and clean and beds were so comfy. Food was reasonably priced with a decent choice.

nice stay but room very small
the room was really small more like a cupboard number 63 avoid if you can as its not big enough to swing a cat around as we were only staying the one night i didn't complain but if i had been staying longer certainly would on the plus side it was clean. Bar areas and outside were plentiful although when the sun comes out people are vying for the tables in the sun. Quite a lot of steps into the beer garden so be careful as one of our party tripped and that was before alcohol! The chairs in the bar areas could have been a little more plush as they weren't the best for comfort.

All staff friendly and helpful, food and drink good and service timely. Rooms comfortable and fan provided to cool rather warm room. Good shower but water flow not adjustable. There was no lift but staff carried luggage upstairs. Car parking provided but a bit tight and not close enough for older people with luggage!

It’s a nice old building in a great position but it wasn’t a high quality traditional hotel. It would be a lot better with better quality food in particular. It felt as if corners were being cut and it was looking for the lowest common denominator.

Lovely room and staff, food on the evening wasnt too good and breakfast just ok, stopped here last year and food was great but not impressed this time but great its a dog friendly hotel, would stay again but eat elsewhere

Great hotel highly recommend.
Stayed for 4 nights in deluxe double. Room and bathroom a good size. Comfy super king bed. Plenty of plug sockets and storage space. Tea making facilities and safe in room. Fantastic shower. Iron and ironing board in room. Lots of dining space in the hotel. Food was superb. Full English was excellent. Had evening meal a couple of nights and the food was very good. All the staff were exceptionally friendly, cheerful and helpful. Helmsley is a beautiful town too so great location. Hotel car park is small though but our stay was out of season so ok. Broadband was a bit hit and miss. If revisiting the area would certainly stay there. Had a lovely time. Big thank you to The Black Swan.
