Izumo is located approximately 13 miles northwest of Unnan and about 400 miles west of Tokyo, the national capital.
To truly experience the tastes, flavors and textures of the Izumo region, head over to Shimane Winery. Lovers of fine wine can tour the vineyards and barrel rooms, before sampling the vintages offered.
Admire herbs, shrubs and trees at the Kokokuji Temple Garden. Don't forget to pack a camera to photograph the most interesting specimens.
Take a break from the streets and get inspired by nature at one or two of the lush public parks. Atagoyama Park and Tebikigaoka Park are ideal options. Shimane Flower Village and Kojindani Historical Park are also worthwhile.
Plan a trip to Tachikue Valley, a picturesque spot for relaxation. Stroll along the water's edge and try to spot some birds or just have a picnic.
If you need a break from sightseeing, you may like to go out and see some of the nearby coast. Bring some supplies and head over for a relaxing afternoon at Inasa Beach or Kirara Road Station, two of the best spots in the area.
This area is filled with educational facts and stories, and you'll find plenty to explore within the rooms of its many educational exhibition spaces. Meander through the hallways as you check out the varied collections at the Hirata Honjin Memorial Museum and Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo. Izumo Quilt Museum and Shinjiko Nature Museum Gobius are two more that are worth a visit.
Izumo offers a multitude of historic attractions that are worth discovering if you are a history buff. Izumo Okuni Tower and Izumo Taisha are two of the more famous historic attractions. Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse and Izumo Cultural Tradition Hall are two more heritage sites to continue your journey into the past.
Even those people who usually do not find history fascinating will appreciate the designs and artifacts in the many religious buildings. Take your time to walk the grounds of Umi Shrine and Susa Shrine. A cultural stopover is not finished without time spent at Hinomisaki Shrine or the Gakuenji Temple.
