Nice hotel located just outside the main city

Posted Dec 17, 2015
Pros: nice decor and quaint rooms. good location outside crowded area but v close to city. good food.
Cons: bit of a let down when asked not to sit near the poolside unless we ate buffet there (on the weekend i think) . not expectd of a taj grp property.
had a very nice stay at the Gateway Rawalkot. The hotel is very pretty made out of an old haveli and is popular amongst locals as the Rawalkot. The best part of the hotel was the car and the drive that we hired through the hotel. he was very courteous and a good guide for our trips to nearby places. Stayed with family and the evening poolside programs were nice.

Pros: location.. just outside the town (2 min rickshaw ride)
Cons: getting ripped off by staff
everything is very expensive here. stay at DESERT TULIP next door if you can, and if you can't, at least eat there... they are so friendly even to non guests!! plus they'll give you free internet if you have their (cheaper and better) meals!! aside from everything being way too expensive, the general manager and his sidekick atthe restaurant was the worst of the staff. one night they had a BBQ all set up beautifully for a group that was staying for one night. the GM came to me and told me that my husband and I could eat the BBQ with their compliments (free) as we had been the ONLY guests for 5 whole days. we thought this was great.. only when the bill came did we realize that his BBQ meant only the BBQ'd meat!!! everything else at the buffet cost us $20 EACH!! sneaky and just bad business.

A jewel in the desert.

Pros: Sitting on the terrace at sunset looking back upon the Jaisalmer Fort
From the moment we called the hotel from the railway station seeking advice to get to the hotel rather than the hundreds of touts the staff and management did everything they could to make our stay an enjoyable experience. The staff provided sound and balanced information of Jaisalmer tourists aspects and a realistic expectation of costs. Would definitely stay here again.

beautiul building, interesting layout, interesting room decor, very fitting to the location (near Rajasthani desert) My only negative complaint would be that the air conditioners were a little too weak to keep up with the heat - but to be fair, it was almost 50 degrees celsius when we were there - really NOT the tourist season. However, the general manager was kind enough to let us use the pool (beautiful pool!) after regular hours, and that helped a lot.
