This hotel opened in the late 70s with some distinction -- the first chinese built, owned, and operated 5-star hotel in shanghai. It seems to have been modeled on Hilton hotels of the time. Since then, not much has changed, it seems. The decor, furnishings, etc., seem to be in a time warp.
My room (an "executive room") was spacious, absolutely clean, with first rate linens and amenities. Wifi -- which was free -- worked fine. Even the bath, with separate shower, was large and comfortable. The room, along with the rest of the hotel, was also showing its age -- carpet a little worn, decor quite dated, and furnishings a little scuffed-up.
And it is important to recognize that this is a Chinese hotel -- the staff's english is marginal, the food and service may disappoint a western traveler, and the restaurants, bars, etc., are not up to international standards.
However. There are a lot of things to recommend this hotel. The location (a diagonal block from the Hilton) is very good, if you need to be in JingAn. Taxis are available and it's a 5-10 minute walk to the subway. It is a short walk to many good restaurants or the shopping of Nanjing Xi Lu. They also have created several non-smoking floors, so the smoke of typical chinese hotels can be largely avoided.
And perhaps most importantly, it offers very high value. For the price, the room, amenities, and location are a bargain.
