One of the things I love to do most is check out dry moulins. You'll have great opportunities at the #Mendenhall. This requires crampons and ice climbing gear. #blueice #glacier #blue Love Sandy Beach! Perfect place to free run the dogs and one of the few actually sandy beaches in Juneau. Check out Treadwell ruins while you're there. Above is the salt water pumping plant. I should so add, because of the explosion, there is a ton of porcelain in the sand. You can find plates, tea cups and bowl pieces everywhere. #colorful
Millions of years in the making This massive 'River of Ice' otherwise known as Mendenhall Glacier was raw and rugged and breathtaking beautiful on a warm summer day.
It was humbling standing in awe of the last 3,000 years stretching 13 miles up the valley into the Juneau Iceland that feeds Mendenhall and dozens more like it from atop Alaska's Range, a narrow, 400-mile mountain range that includes Denali.
Mendenhall's ice is 100 feet thick at the terminus where water meets glacier. Go visit asap; like many in the area, the glacier is receding, this particular one at 170 feet per year. According to some estimates, by the end of this century visitors will not be able to see Mendenhall Glacier from the Visitor's Center. So sad!
You can read more about my visit via my blog at http://www.aplacecalledroam.com/home/alaskas-mendenhall-glacier-raw-rugged-receding. Kayaking to Mendenhall Glacier via Mendenhall Lake #lifeatexpedia Take the Mt. Roberts tramway in Juneau, then hike a few miles uphill. You'll be rewarded not just with great views of Juneau and the Gastineau Channel, but also the mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers on the far side of the ridge behind the city. Beautiful sunset!! Glacier view Breathtaking view from Mt Robert Picture of the rescued eagle on top of the mountain! He was posing for me:) I believe this is the old hospital from the Treadwell mine explosion. Pretty good to check out and very accessible. Juneau, Alaska on Douglas Island. ** Update: This is the old office building. The hospital is the next building down the trail.*** #colorful
Breathtaking.

The bald eagles flying overhead are gorgeous! Beautiful, quiet, secluded place a friend took me to. Cool excursion. Lots of marine life. Favorite Treadwell building so far. Not sure what it used to be. Possibly a church? It's huge! If you look close enough you'll see my friend and I standing at the entrance. This building is a little harder to find. If you take Treadwell trail and go take a right to go up .. Behind the hospital I believe, just continue straight on that trail. You'll come to a pull off that looks over a small bluff and there is a gate. Just keep going and maybe 15ft after the gate turn left into the woods and you will run into this old building. -- if you walk to the end of sand beach and look up you'll see the top of it. #abandoned Pretty capital:) We went on a a boat trip in Juneau to see whales, we did not see any but the fishing boats had a lot of cool interesting looking fish in tubs. Humpback whales. Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska Steep hike on Mt. Juneau. There's EXCELLENT whale watching near Juneau! The streets of Juneau For nature lovers, there is no better cruise than one to Alaska, especially in the month of July. When in Juneau, head to Mendenhall glacier and rent a kayak to get close to the tongue of the glacier. This area is also famous for sightings of humpback whales so make sure you take a whale watching excursion. We were super lucky and saw 13 humpback whales on our outing. Priceless!
#Alaska #Glacier #Whales The Coast Guard greets your cruise ship while coming into port. All other vessels make sure they keep their distance away while the ships come in. Beach walk on a sunny night! Well worth the trip. BEST crab bisque (crabs provided by 'Deadliest Catch' at Tracy's)
More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com First day in Juneau, AK. Cloudy but what a view! Looking down to Gastineau Channel. Early September The hatchery is all about the salmon, but the inside aquarium is fun to look at too! #waterlust #blue Don't miss it This was my first experience eating king crab, and it was wonderful!!! Used my zoom for this one across the channel from Juneau. Early September. Sunset from the cruise ship pulling out of the Juneau Alaska harbor. The Alaska State Library, Archives & Museum is a great place to visit on a rainy day, or any day! The new building opened June 2016, so it's brand new and bigger than before! There are new exhibits on display and a brand new bigger and better eagle tree in the atrium!
#lovemytown Juneau, AK - Whale Watching, Rainforest, and Glacier Tour - Whale Watching - Steller's Sea Lions
Juneau offers many options for whale watching and other nature-oriented tours. This tour, by Gastineau Guiding Company, provided for whale watching (which guaranteed whale sightings and came through with that guarantee – we also saw sea lions, shore birds, and an eagle), a hike through temperate rain forest in Tongass National Forest (which also provided an opportunity to see spawning salmon and a mother black bear and her cubs), and a visit to Mendenhall Glacier. The tour operator was great and I highly recommend this type of excursion for nature-lovers visiting Juneau!
#Red NorthStar Trekking. Not a bad ride to work everyday ;). NS is one of the best tour companies to use to check out the Mendenhall. I don't just say that because I guided there. We really love to show you everything we can! #Helicopter Day trip from Cruise Another great sight in the fjord is this glacier carved valley. This little food truck has delicious salmon cakes and burgers. Highly recommended. Very affordable!! Take a minute and talk to the owners, they are amazing! View of tramway Mt Roberts Tram and a bit of Juneau.

#Red This is THE place to get your crab on! Huge delicious crab legs provided by the Deadliest Catch fishermen and warm crab bisque that I crave while I'm away. This place is the reason I take so many cruise contracts to Alaska!

Alaska’s capital is a small city nestled at the base of Mt Juneau on the Gastineau Channel in Alaska’s panhandle. It is only accessible by plane or boat and is a regular stop on the Inside Passage cruises. Central Juneau boasts many shops, galleries, and restaurants catering to tourists, as well as Alaska’s central government buildings. There is also a small historic Orthodox church. The area is rich in wildlife and many whale watching and other excursions depart from Juneau’s marinas.
