Paris Cleaners Drop-Off Booth
1524 South Westnedge, Kalamazoo
The legacy of Paris Cleaners can be traced to 1902 in Kalamazoo. First located on O’Neill Street, Paris was one of the few early dry cleaners that lasted, with several satellite shops around the community. Dating to 1954, the South Westnedge branch of Paris Cleaners is a little gem in Kalamazoo. It was patterend after magazine clippings of California drive-throughs sent to its longtime proprietors, the Bell family, by a previous owner. Rumor has it that it was the first drive-through dry cleaner in the Midwest by only two days.
The drop-off booth’s color has an interesting tale behind it. The Bell family, who owned Paris Cleaners in the 1950s, could not afford to paint their old delivery truck when the drop-off booth was opened. All they could manage was a primer coat, which just happened to be bright purple. Associates and clients all responded well, and it hasn’t changed since.
Neon lights, brick glass windows, triangular shape and rounded corners place the Paris Cleaners Drop-Off at the tail end of the Art Deco movement.
#PureMichigan #YesThereReallyIsAKalamazoo #Michigan #Kalamazoo #KalamazooCounty The Kalamazoo County Fair started around 1846 and is one of the oldest fairs in Michigan. The initial goal was where those involved in agriculture came together to exhibit their crops and animals. With the addition of other entities over the years, the fair is the premier educational event in our community. It provides a venue for more than 500 4-H youth to display their projects. The fair has always been about education and that continues to be its core mission.
Additionally, the midway rides and food vendors has become a big draw as well as the grand stand shows ranging from musical guests and smash up derbies to dirtbike racing and monster truck shows to name a few. Make it a tradition for your family, its great kid friendly fun!
My family enjoys it every year.

Economic pressures and popular movements in the late sixties and early seventies led to the creation of a great many food co-ops across Michigan and the country.
Confronted with few choices for unprocessed, whole foods, people decided to band together and buy in bulk directly from producers and distributors. What has evolved from this over the past thirty-plus years is a thriving natural foods industry, with the co-ops at the core.
They were incorporated in 1973 and housed the store in several different locations over the years (including 37 years on Burdick St).
They then moved into their current home at 507 Harrison St in June 2011. They encourage ownership, but anyone may shop at the People's Food Co-op.
People's Food Co-op of Kalamazoo is a consumer-owned cooperative grocery store, bringing a full array of natural products and healthful foods to the community at reasonable prices. The People's Food Co-op of Kalamazoo exists to create access to food that is healthy for people, land, and the economy.
Here are a few things that make the Co-op different:
They strive to provide fresh, organic, and whole foods, offering the community healthy choices for a variety of dietary needs.
They purchase locally grown and produced goods, helping to keep local funds cycling back into the local economy.
They participate in and support the local farmers markets, including the 100 Mile Market, the Kalamazoo Farmers Market (on Bank St), and the Kalamazoo Foods Market.
They help provide access to food assistance programs (SNAP benefits) both at the store and at several local farmers’ markets. Everyone should be able to eat healthy, delicious, and local food.
They provide educational opportunities for the community related to food and food systems (such as cooking classes, tabling, speaking engagements, hosting events at the store and in the community).

Kalamazoo's premier green space and the traditional downtown centerpiece is Bronson Park, named for the community's founder, Titus Bronson. The park's notable features include an Indian mound on its south side; a fountain designed by Alfonse Ianelli depicting the brutality of white settlers toward Native Americans; and a sculpture, #TroverContest

Best said in their own words...
So what is fuel?
Another hole-in-the-wall restaurant?
Not exactly.
Only a restaurant?
Not exactly.
You want a thick greasy burger and a super-sized candy-water? But that's not who we are; it's not on our map. We can't even tell you how to get there. Not in good conscience.
Suppose you try this instead?
fuel is ....
Whatever we can think of. Whatever makes sense. And big sense of fun.
An alternative to bottom-line, bottom-dollar, business-as-usual capitalism.
You've seen restauranteurs who believe the quality of food is more important than the quality of the life of a community. That's not what we believe. That philosophy would never get us to our destination.
We offer the finest and freshest in Plant-based, Grain-based, Eco-focused cuisine.
We are Kalamazoo's only completely vegetarian, raw and vegan-friendly restaurant and a deliberate rip in the fabric of the all too-typical, modern American food-ways.
Our philosophy: Unequivocally Community Driven
With each bite of fuel's food, you are supporting space that offers culinary arts classes and on the job training to traditionally marginalized young people. fuel will build on Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative’s holistic workforce training and youth development programs which provide life skills, grant writing, arts training and work experience for youth from traditionally marginalized communities. With fuel's training and kitchen space - Fire will be able to develop its culinary arts program - bites. fuel will help Fire continue to serve as a model for economic and youth development in the Edison neighborhood and the Kalamazoo community by providing a permanent and licensed kitchen home for bites. As a result, fuel will help Fire addresses the deeply ingrained social cycle of poverty, violence, and neglect that effects people ages 16 to 24. fuel staff understands that restaurant training and mentoring provides experience in a thriving hospitality sector and allows young people to identify their passion while supporting themselves and their families. At fuel, our attempt is to take it a few steps further. After young adults are trained through and cater for Bites for a minimum of six months, fuel intends to provide at least one youth with a job in the restaurant. As the business grows, fuel will continue to hire more Bite's trained staff.
