A little disappointed but overall good

Posted Dec 26, 2015 on Hotels
Think the definition of superior double was a little overstated. One side light to bed had broken lampshade which didn't impress on first entry to the room. I would say it was a conventional double - certainly not superior in size or facilities though bathroom was excellent. Could have done with more milk and tea provision. Breakfast good and location ideal and general feel of place was excellent apart from above.

Bad attitude.

Due to illness my wife and I were unable to stay on the date we had booked. However, on calling the hotel to cancel our booking, I was very disappointed with the phone manner of staff. I would now NOT consider staying at this hotel for business due to the appalling attitude I experienced when calling to cancel.

Real gem of a find ...... great food & service!

Posted Dec 22, 2015 on Hotels
I stayed for 2 nights while on business in Maidstone. Plenty of free parking, the hotel is part of a training/conference centre. The rooms are ok - good enough for 2 nights, no bath only a shower, no bottled water & the carpet was quite grubby. But the restaurant was superb - £17 for 2 courses & of a high quality. The bar area was pleasant. I paid £65 per night B&B, great value. I'll definitely be staying there again & have already recommended it to family.

Thumbs up for night porter - check your kettle

Posted Oct 25, 2015 on Hotels
The night porter was very helpful & went out of his way. I think his name was John - he really is an asset to this business & reception staff should spend 10 minutes with him if they want to learn about customer service. I arrived very late. The porter escorted me to my room. He then brought an iron & ironing board to my room. I had, had nothing to eat so he drew me directions to a local Tesco where I was able to get a sandwich. The builders were really rowdy in the next room. The porter was right round to their room, but they had calmed down by the he got there. It was appreciated as most hotels are reluctant to get involved. the Hotel is lovely old building & done up to a good standard. I went to have a coffee, but the kettle was full of gunk. Water must have been lying in it for a while. On check out I didn't complain, but thought it worth mentioning. Receptionist didn't appear to care and was more interested in talking with someone in the office. You have the wrong person dealing with your customers Oakwood House. I would still recommend this hotel & enjoyed my stay.

Great place..Would book again

Posted Sep 6, 2015 on Hotels
Really enjoyed our night here..Visiting from Canada we were concerned about where to stay..And this hotel was great..Bar staff at night were super helpful in helping us pic a drink..And the included breakfast was very impressive..From cereal to full English..I had Kippers..Very nice.. (a first for me)..Would recommend it for sure.. The beds were kinds hard but we slept very well so I guess that was OK.. Rated it mostly 4 stars only because I think something has to be extra special for 5..(yet to have found that place) One thing we forgot was to bring our passports..This was the only night we stayed at a hotel and didnt know it was required..Luckilly they accepted my driver's licence as ID.. Kind of awkward to fined (but I'm a little spatially challenged), very nice reception staff. Room was small but clean and well appointed. My daughter enjoyed the colour scheme. The bed was very comfy.

Reception spend a lot of time talking to each other and not to guests. Fire alarm went off at night and all the guests had to evacuate. On checkout the following morn the receptionist was too busy talking to her mate to notice me and simply retorted 'alright!' They took my card and carried on talking. A simple acknowledgement something had happend would have made me feel so much better. Hotel was occupied by German guests who were confused they didn't understand. Then two young chaps came walking past with faces like thunder and muttered something incomprehensible about a kettle we all assumed it was okay to go back in..what a rude, disorganised way to treat people! Bed was uncomfortable as the mattress badly needs replacing as the springs have all gone, tv wasnt tuned and remote didn't work, I spent the first two hours the first night trying to figure out how to tune the tv. Bedroom door shudders when people walk up the corridor so in the middle of the night you wake up startled thinking someone has banged on your door. Breakfast is very good with a great selection. Used to be a buffet which worked much better. Vegetarian option could be better. The lady and the man in the restaurant are excellent and very attentive. The exterior of the hotel is charming a very old quirky building that has been developed well. Nice bar with a good selection

Good location but let down by poor insulation

Posted Aug 24, 2015
Pros: Location
Cons: Difficult to say as the main problems are structural
Staff were helpful and breakfast was good but the walls are wafer thin, so heard every sound from adjoining rooms and corridor. Topped off by the folk opposite taking to the corridor to have a very interesting and noisy row. Didn't have the heart to complain as they clearly had sufficient issues without being told off by the staff, but better insulation would have dramatically reduced the problem. The rooms were also quite small, but the bathrooms were surprisingly well appointed.
