Good Ambience!

I would have rated this stay as overall excellent but there was one big negative factor which kind of cast a dark shadow over the experience. When we checked in, we were assigned a room on the major construction side of the hotel of which we were not made aware at all. The Reception Staff did not consider it their responsibility to mention or even offer an apology at the time of check-in..when we heard the commotion of banging & drilling once in the room, the Concierge very flippantly said, " oh it will be over by 6pm"..& this was at 2pm. First of all, it ended at 6.45pm & that was irrelevant because a guest should not have to endure such a ruccus even for a minute without any prior notice & when we are paying the full rate for the room. We had specifically chosen Taj Bengal because of its serene location & because this trip was mostly geared towards rest & relaxation & spending more time in our rooms. I had to request a room change and the Duty Manager agreed only when i said i would endure 1 day since there was no immediate availability & he definitely would have to move me the following day! I am just amazed that not once did the Management or Staff show any empathy towards the guest's discomfort ...if anything, it portrayed a flagrant disregard of customer service & client attention. We are regular guests of The Grand Oberoi & I must say, despite being in the middle of the Chowrangee & New Market din, it still provides an oasis of tranquility. So, going back to them!

Rennovations/ remodelling happening

Lovely, gracious hotel but I'd recommend that you stay away until the rennovations/remodelling are finished. Some of the facilities are closed or reduced and there is significant noise from builders during the day. I wasn't aware of this when I booked the hotel and it would have been a deciding factor to stay elsewhere.

We were at the Taj for a stopover to Darjeeling.

The staff at the Taj Bengal are almost certainly the best I have experienced in 35 years of travelling. Very impressed! The hotel facilities were excellent and the food in the Indian restaurant was exceptional.

Lovely hotel with superb service

This was our first trip to Kolkata and we had a terrific experience in large measure thanks to the great facilities and in particular staff at the Taj Bengal. Our driver Raja was terrific and concierge Bimal was amazingly helpful. We left a backback at a store on our last day. Bimal picked it up on his way home and shipped it to our next distination. We will definitely stay there on our next visit

Top service and clean hotel

Great friendly staff, good service, clean rooms, vast menu range for breakfast Europian as well as local dishes. I have stayed in a number of hotels in Kolkata but this is the best. Recommend this hotel.

Excellent

The only problem I faced there was network connection with my mobile. The Breakfast was awesome. Specially there cutting chai was worth remembering.
